The number 5 is a device- or firmware-specific value whose exact meaning is not publicly documented by Samsung or Qualcomm. By itself, it does not prove that the phone is hacked, rooted, monitored, or damaged.
Qualcomm describes the SPU as an isolated security environment for functions such as secure boot, key management, cryptography and protected credentials (Qualcomm security overview). Samsung’s Download mode may show the line as SPU: 5 or SPU [VALID]: 5, depending on the model and firmware.
What SPU means
In Qualcomm terminology, SPU generally expands to Secure Processing Unit. It is part of the platform’s hardware-backed security architecture, not an Android app or a person monitoring the phone.

Qualcomm discusses these capabilities in its Snapdragon security documentation and on its platform pages, including the SDM845 and Snapdragon mobile processors (Qualcomm Snapdragon security explanation, SDM845, Snapdragon mobile processors).
Why it appears in Download mode
Samsung Download mode is a low-level servicing screen used by the bootloader for firmware installation and security checks. On Galaxy models using Qualcomm hardware, the bootloader can display information related to the Snapdragon security subsystem.
The exact labels and colors vary by model, carrier version and firmware. Owners have reported both SPU: 5 and SPU [VALID]: 5 on Galaxy devices, including apparently normal phones (Android Central discussion; HardForum Galaxy S20 case).
Qualcomm documents what the SPU does generally, but the available public documentation does not define Samsung’s numeric value 5. It may be an internal version, state or implementation value. It should not be interpreted as a severity score or a count of security incidents.

Does SPU: 5 mean the phone is hacked?
No—not from that line alone. There is no verified Samsung or Qualcomm explanation tying SPU: 5 to spyware, rooting, bootloader unlocking or unauthorized access. Community reports show the same value on devices that were not identified as compromised.
Claims that red SPU text proves malware or that someone is watching the phone are user speculation, not an established diagnostic rule (example of an unsupported community claim).
SPU status is also not the same thing as bootloader status. A phone can display an SPU value while still reporting an official Samsung binary and an intact Knox warranty state.
What the other Download-mode fields tell you
Photograph or transcribe the complete screen rather than relying on the SPU line. These fields are usually more useful when checking a used phone or diagnosing a flash:

What red SPU text means
Red text can draw attention to a status or warning, but color alone does not identify the cause. No official Samsung rule establishes that red SPU: 5 means rooting, malware or a failed security unit (community discussion).
If the same screen says Current Binary: Samsung Official, shows Knox Warranty Void: 0x0 where that field is present, reports secure boot or secure download as enabled, and the phone works normally, the SPU line alone supplies no evidence of modification. Conversely, a Custom binary, Knox Warranty Void: 0x1, an unlocked bootloader or a specific verification error deserves separate investigation.
If you entered Download mode accidentally
If no firmware operation is running, it is generally safe to leave Download mode and restart the phone. Do not interrupt an active flash.
- Disconnect the USB cable if you are not installing firmware.
- On models using this combination, hold Volume Down + Side/Power for about seven seconds.
- Release the keys when the phone restarts.
- If it returns immediately to Download mode, remove a case that may be pressing a button and repeat the forced restart.
The exact key combination varies across Galaxy models. A community guide documents the Volume Down and Side/Power method for recent devices (example guidance).

If Odin will not detect the phone
Odin detection problems are normally USB, driver, firmware or device-compatibility issues—not proof that SPU 5 is defective.
- Install the current Samsung USB drivers on Windows.
- Use a known-good, data-capable USB cable.
- Connect directly to the computer, not through a hub.
- Try another USB port or another computer.
- Confirm that the phone is actually in Download mode.
- Use firmware for the exact model number and compatible carrier or region variant.
- Never try to flash a lower bootloader revision than the device already has.
Understanding common flashing errors
SW REV CHECK FAIL or Fused 10 > Binary 9
This normally means the firmware you attempted to install has an older bootloader revision than the one fused into the phone. A documented Galaxy repair case identifies Fused 10 > Binary 9 as this type of mismatch (Elektroda discussion). Obtain firmware with a matching or newer revision; changing the SPU line is not the remedy.
Auth fail or authentication failure
Authentication errors can involve a carrier or model restriction, an incorrect firmware package, FRP or bootloader state, an unsuitable Odin version, or a device requiring authorized service. There is no single cause for every phone (documented Galaxy case).
Custom binary, Knox 0x1 or an unlocked bootloader
Those indicators are more relevant to modification history than SPU: 5. They still do not reveal exactly what was changed, so avoid inferring a complete history from one field.

The phone remains stuck in Download mode
Use the model-specific forced-restart procedure once. If the phone repeatedly returns to Download mode, cannot boot Android or recovery, or shows a persistent bootloader error, stop trying random firmware packages. Get the exact model, carrier or region, complete screen text and error message before seeking model-specific repair help or authorized Samsung service.
When SPU: 5 is only informational
- The phone boots and operates normally.
- Download mode identifies the current binary as Samsung Official.
- Knox shows
0x0, where that field is available. - Secure Boot or Secure Download is enabled.
- No flashing or verification error is displayed.
In that situation, leave the SPU value alone and do not flash firmware merely because it is visible. Investigate further only when there are independent signs such as a custom binary, a changed Knox state, repeated bootloader entry, explicit Odin errors, or unusual account or app activity outside Download mode.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: SPU generally means Qualcomm’s Secure Processing Unit. The value 5—and even red formatting—has no publicly documented meaning that proves hacking, rooting or spyware. Judge the phone from the complete Download-mode screen, especially the binary, Knox, lock and error fields, plus whether it boots normally.
