“Set as default” tells your device to use a particular app automatically for a supported task. For example, setting a browser as the default means ordinary web links will normally open in it; setting a PDF reader as the default means compatible PDF files will normally open there. It is a changeable preference, not a permanent lock.
What happens when you set an app as the default?
Your device uses the selected app as its preferred handler for a particular category, file type, or link. If a suitable default is saved, the app usually opens without asking. If there is no default, the device may show an “Open with” prompt. If the app cannot handle the item, another compatible app or an error may appear.
The choice is limited to what the app supports and the device allows. A browser default does not necessarily affect PDFs, a PDF app does not automatically become the default for Word documents, and a music player may not support every audio format. Windows, for example, associates apps with registered file types and protocols such as .jpg, .mp3, http, or mailto, rather than treating one app as able to open everything (Microsoft Learn: Default Programs).
- Browser: handles ordinary web links.
- PDF reader: handles supported PDF files.
- Photo or media app: handles the image, audio, or video formats it supports.
- Email app: may handle email links or related actions where the operating system permits it.
- Maps app: may handle supported map links or location actions.
These are separate categories. Choosing one browser does not automatically select your PDF viewer, photo app, or email client.

“Always” versus “Just once”

Google documents these choices for Pixel/Android: clearing the saved default restores the app-selection prompt (Google Pixel Phone Help).
What setting a default does not do
Normally, it does not delete or disable other apps, erase their data, or make the chosen app the only one capable of the task. You can usually still open another app directly. It also does not automatically grant every permission to the app; it changes which app the device prefers for the relevant action. Work or school management, parental controls, manufacturer customization, or operating-system rules can restrict which defaults you may change.

A browser default is not a search-engine default
Your default browser is the app that opens compatible web links. Your default search engine is the provider that handles searches made inside that browser. These are different settings; Chrome’s setup instructions treat choosing Chrome as the browser and choosing a search engine as separate steps (Google Chrome Help).

Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps or Choose default apps.
- Choose a category, such as Browser app.
- Select the app you want.
This is Google’s documented general route for Android browser defaults (Google Android Help). For Chrome specifically, Google lists Settings → Apps → Default apps → Browser app → Chrome (Google Chrome Help for Android). The menu wording and location vary among Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, Xiaomi, and other phones, and across Android versions. Look for labels such as Default apps, Open by default, or Supported web addresses.

Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- Search for the app, such as Chrome, and select it.
- Choose Set default.
- Review the file types and link types Windows shows for the app.
This is the Windows 11 route in Google’s Chrome instructions (Google Chrome Help). Depending on the app and interface, the change may cover several supported associations or let you choose individual ones. Check the displayed extensions and protocols: making an app the default for one file type does not necessarily make it the default for others.
iPhone and iPad
For Chrome, Google documents this route: open Chrome → Settings → Default Browser → Go to Settings → Default Browser App, then select the browser. Google notes that some default-app features require iOS or iPadOS 18 or later (Google Search Help). Which categories can be changed depends on Apple’s operating-system rules, region, app type, and version; not every app category is available everywhere.

Clear a default or undo the choice
In general, you can select a different app in the default-app settings, clear the current association, or choose a different app the next time a prompt appears. The exact controls vary by platform.

Android
On Pixel devices, Google’s documented route is Settings → Apps → select the app → Open by default → Clear default preferences. When you next perform the relevant action, the phone should ask which app to use (Google Pixel Phone Help). Other Android phones may offer an equivalent under Settings → Apps → [app name] → Set as default → Clear defaults, but labels and availability differ.

Windows
Open Settings → Apps → Default apps and review the app’s individual file-type or protocol associations. Select a different app for the association you want to change. Windows defaults can be managed per registered file type and protocol, so changing the browser association will not necessarily change the PDF or email association (Microsoft Learn: Default Programs).
Why the chosen app may not open every link or file
- Unsupported format: The app may not support that file type, or the file may be damaged, encrypted, or in a newer format.
- Different association: A file extension or link protocol may have a different default from the one you changed.
- In-app browser or viewer: Some apps open links in their own built-in web view, which may not follow the system browser default.
- App-specific link: A service link may open its associated app, depending on the operating system’s link-handling rules and that app’s registered addresses.
- Restricted device: A work, school, or parental-control policy may prevent changing the relevant default.
Fix common default-app problems
The wrong app opens
Open the device’s default-app settings and change the relevant category or association to your preferred app. On Android, check the category itself—for example, the browser default—rather than assuming that changing an app’s other defaults will affect it.
The device keeps asking
You may have chosen Just once, no default may have been saved, the app may not support the item, or the action may be handled by another app or embedded viewer. Choose Always when offered, or assign the app in default-app settings if that category is supported.
The app is missing from the list
- Confirm that the app is installed and enabled.
- Check whether it supports the category, file type, or protocol.
- Update the app if an update is available.
- Check for a different settings page or label on your device.
- Consider whether device management or operating-system rules restrict the choice.
Clearing a default changes nothing
You may have cleared the wrong app or association. For example, clearing a browser preference will not necessarily change which app opens PDFs or email links. On Windows, inspect the particular file extension or protocol involved instead of relying only on the app’s overall status.
