Personal Voice lets a compatible iPhone create a synthetic voice that sounds similar to yours, then use it to speak text you type. It was introduced with iOS 17 as an accessibility feature, especially for people at risk of losing their ability to speak. Pair it with Live Speech and your typed messages can be spoken aloud in person or during supported phone and FaceTime calls.
What Personal Voice does
Personal Voice builds a voice model from recordings of you reading prompts. It is not a collection of prerecorded sentences: supported Apple features can generate speech from new text in a voice resembling yours. The aim is to help preserve some of a person’s vocal identity if speaking becomes difficult or impossible, including for people with ALS or other conditions that may affect speech.
Personal Voice does not decide what to say. You type the words yourself, or provide them through a supported assistive communication app; a speech feature then reads them aloud. The result may sound similar to you, but Apple does not promise an exact replica.

Apple introduced Personal Voice with iOS 17 in 2023. It is an accessibility tool, not a general-purpose voice-cloning service for creating arbitrary audio or impersonating someone.

Personal Voice vs. Live Speech

Think of Personal Voice as the voice and Live Speech as the type-to-speak feature that uses it. Live Speech can also use Apple’s standard voices.
How Personal Voice worked in iOS 17
On the original iOS 17 workflow, you created a voice by reading approximately 150 prompted sentences. To start, open Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice, tap Create a Personal Voice, and follow the prompts. You could pause and resume the recording session.

After recording, the iPhone processed the material to build the voice model. Apple’s description of the original system says training and voice generation took place on device; processing could take overnight while the device was charging, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. Keep the iPhone powered, locked, and on Wi-Fi if processing is still underway, then check Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice to resume or review setup.

Apple has since described faster creation methods, so the original prompt count and processing time should not be assumed to apply to every later iOS version.

How to use Personal Voice with Live Speech
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Live Speech and turn on Live Speech.
- Select your Personal Voice as the voice to use.
- Triple-click the side button to open Live Speech. On an iPhone with a Home button, use that button instead. The shortcut’s behavior can vary if you have assigned it to multiple accessibility features.
- Type your message in the Live Speech window and tap Speak.
Without a call, the phone speaks through its audio output for an in-person conversation. During supported phone or FaceTime calls, the generated speech is sent as call audio. Personal Voice can also be used with built-in accessibility features such as VoiceOver and Read & Speak, and with compatible third-party augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) apps.
Compatible devices and requirements
For an iPhone, Apple’s listed minimum is iPhone 12 or later running iOS 17 or later. Personal Voice also requires a device passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. Apple lists support on certain iPad models and Apple-silicon Mac computers as well; the applicable operating-system requirements are iPadOS 17 or later and macOS Sonoma or later. Personal Voice and Live Speech are not available in every language. Language availability can vary by feature, operating-system release, and region, so check Apple’s current documentation for your configuration rather than assuming a language is supported because it is available elsewhere in iOS.
Privacy, sharing, and limits
Apple says Personal Voice is encrypted and stored securely on the device, with access protected by device authentication. If you enable sharing across your devices, an iCloud copy is protected with end-to-end encryption; Apple says this sharing requires the same Apple Account and two-factor authentication. In other words, on-device processing does not mean there can never be a stored cloud copy.

A third-party AAC app must support the relevant Apple accessibility interfaces and receive your permission to use Personal Voice. Apple says an approved app can use the voice to speak but cannot capture speech from Personal Voice. A Legacy Contact cannot access your Personal Voice.
Apple restricts Personal Voice to making a voice resembling your own, using your own voice, for personal, noncommercial use. It is not an Apple-approved way to reproduce a deceased relative’s or celebrity’s voice, create commercial narration, or make unrestricted cloned audio. Third-party voice services have different terms and privacy practices; Personal Voice’s rules should not be taken as a description of those services.
Speech quality can vary. Recording in a quiet place, speaking clearly and naturally, and keeping microphone distance and volume consistent can help. Noise, rushed or mumbled readings, pronunciation, or a condition affecting speech may influence the result. It is best understood as a recognizable synthetic approximation, not a guarantee of natural or identical speech. You still need to enter text or use an AAC method to communicate; the feature does not convert thoughts directly into spoken words.

If something is not working
- Personal Voice is missing: Check that you have an iPhone 12 or later, iOS 17 or later, a passcode or biometric authentication set up, and a supported language. Look under Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice; Live Speech is a separate setting.
- Setup is stalled: On the original iOS 17 workflow, processing could take a long time. Keep the phone charging, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi, then return to Personal Voice settings to check progress or resume.
- Live Speech is silent: Confirm Live Speech is enabled, the intended voice is selected, and you tapped Speak after entering text. Check volume, mute status, and the selected audio output. On a call, make sure the other person can hear call audio and that the call supports Live Speech.
- The generated voice sounds unnatural: Recording conditions and pronunciation can affect the result. If you make or redo a recording, choose a quiet setting and read naturally and clearly; no adjustment can guarantee an exact match.
