It is a goal-setting framework: an Objective describes what a person or team wants to achieve, and Key Results define measurable outcomes that show progress toward it.
What are the parts of an OKR?
Objective
The Objective states the intended achievement. It is usually qualitative and directional: it describes the goal, rather than the measurement used to judge it.
Key Results
Key Results make progress or success assessable. A useful Key Result names an observable metric and a time period, so it is clearer than a general aspiration. Microsoft’s OKR-writing guidance contrasts “Increase sales” with the more specific “Increase sales by 10% this quarter.”
Initiatives
Initiatives are the work or actions associated with an Objective and its Key Results. They may be tracked alongside them, but they are not part of what the acronym OKR stands for. See Microsoft’s overview of OKRs.

What is a simple OKR example?
Using Microsoft’s sales example to show the difference between the parts:
- Objective: Increase sales.
- Key Result: Increase sales by 10% this quarter.
The Objective names the desired achievement; the Key Result adds a measurable target and a deadline. This is an illustration of the distinction, not a rule that every Objective should use this wording.

OKRs are associated with Andy Grove’s work at Intel and John Doerr’s later introduction of the framework at Google. Amazon Ads describes Grove cautiously as often credited with popularizing the concept. The available accounts do not establish a single uncontested inventor or exact origin date, so it is more accurate to describe this as a history of attribution than to name one definitive origin. Amazon Ads’ OKR overview provides that attribution.
