On Instagram, Embed creates HTML code that displays a public Instagram post, Reel, Guide, or profile inside another website. The original Instagram account remains the source, with attribution and a link back to Instagram; it is not a duplicate post, download, or ordinary copied link.
What happens when you embed Instagram content?
An embed places an Instagram-powered display in a blog post, article, business site, or other webpage. Instagram supplies the media and presentation while the external page contains the embed code or an Instagram URL. Depending on the item and Instagram’s current rendering, visitors may see the photo or video, caption, username, branding, profile link, and interactive controls.
The appearance is not permanently fixed. Instagram can change its design or rendering behavior, and the display depends on the original content remaining public and available. Embedding therefore gives you a live presentation, not ownership of a local media file.
Meta says Instagram embed code includes the content or profile’s username and a link to the Instagram profile. See Instagram’s current Help Center guidance.

Embed vs. copy link, sharing, and reposting
| Option | Where it appears | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Embed | External website | Displays the Instagram item inside a webpage using embed code or a supported URL. |
| Copy link | Messages, documents, or webpages | Provides a URL that someone opens separately; it does not place the post inside the page. |
| Share to Story | References the content in an Instagram Story. | |
| Share to Facebook | Shares or publishes the content on Facebook. | |
| Repost | A social platform | Creates another publication or copy rather than displaying the original item in a webpage. |
An embed normally preserves the original account’s attribution. It does not ordinarily grant permission to download, edit, claim, or commercially reuse the media.
What Instagram content can be embedded?
- Individual public posts
- Public Reels
- Public Guides
- Public Instagram profiles
Instagram’s native Embed control is different from an Instagram feed widget. A feed widget or plugin may show multiple posts through a third-party service, CMS integration, or custom development; it can have separate permissions, maintenance, and compatibility requirements.
How to embed an Instagram post or profile
Meta’s current Help Center says to copy embed code from Instagram.com using a computer or mobile browser, rather than relying on the Instagram app.

- Open Instagram.com in a desktop or mobile browser. Sign in if Instagram requests it.
- Open the public post, Reel, Guide, or profile you want to display.
- Open the item’s More menu, commonly shown as three dots.
- Select Embed, if the option is available.
- Choose Copy Embed Code.
- In your website editor, open an HTML, source-code, custom-code, or HTML-block area and paste the code.
- Save or publish the page.
- Check the published page in a logged-out or private browser window, on both desktop and mobile, to confirm that visitors can see it.
For a profile, open the public profile on Instagram.com and look for Embed in the profile menu. Button names and placement can change, so treat the labels as interface-dependent rather than permanent.
Where should the code go?
Raw embed code belongs in an HTML-capable area, such as a CMS custom HTML block, a blog source editor, or a page builder’s HTML/code widget. If you paste it into an ordinary visual-text field, the page may show the code as text.
Some platforms accept an Instagram URL instead. For example, WordPress documents an Instagram embed block that accepts a post URL and creates a preview when the item is eligible: WordPress Instagram Embed documentation. Do not assume every CMS accepts Instagram’s raw code, scripts, or URL in the same way; some sanitize third-party code or require their own block.

Who can embed an Instagram post?
The practical requirements are:
- The source account is public.
- The account’s Embeds setting is enabled.
- The specific post, Reel, Guide, or profile is still available.
- Your website or CMS supports the relevant URL or embed code.
- Instagram can load the content for the visitor’s browser and account state.
Private accounts and content from private accounts cannot be embedded. A public account can also disable embeds without becoming private, according to Meta’s Help Center.

Why is the Embed option missing?
Check these causes in order:
- You are viewing Instagram in the app instead of Instagram.com in a browser.
- The account is private.
- The public account has disabled embeds.
- The post was deleted, archived, restricted, or otherwise made unavailable.
- You opened a sharing menu that offers Copy link but not Embed.
- Instagram has changed the interface, or an account, age, login, or regional restriction affects the menu.
- The particular item is not eligible for the embed method you are attempting.
Start by opening the URL in a browser, confirming that the account is public, and checking settings related to embeds or sharing and reuse.
How to turn off Instagram embeds
A public account can disable the Embeds setting. Switching the account to private also prevents embedding. Instagram periodically moves or renames these controls; an institutional guide currently describes a path involving Sharing and reuse and Website embeds: University of Utah Instagram setup guide. If your menu differs, search Instagram settings for “embeds,” “website embeds,” or “sharing and reuse.”

Turning the setting off does not necessarily remove every existing display immediately. Meta warns that removal of embedded links from third-party websites may take time.
When an embed shows code instead of the post
- The code was pasted into a normal text field or a code-display block.
- The CMS stripped part of the HTML or blocked scripts.
- The page builder requires its own social or Instagram block.
- The page was not saved, published, or previewed correctly.
Move the code to an HTML/custom-code block. If your CMS supports it, try its native Instagram block with the post URL. Preview the published page while logged out and compare the saved code with what you pasted. If the platform cannot render Instagram content, use a normal link to the original post instead.

When an embed is blank or later disappears
First open the original Instagram URL in a separate browser window. If it is unavailable there, the creator may have deleted it, switched to private, disabled embeds, or otherwise restricted access. Other causes include Instagram changing its external rendering, stale CMS caching, a content blocker or browser extension, a page security policy, or an incompatible widget or plugin.
Test the published page in more than one browser, with and without content-blocking extensions, and on desktop and mobile. A CMS-native block may handle sizing more reliably than manually pasted code, but no embed can display content Instagram no longer makes available.
Is embedding an Instagram post legal?
Technical embeddability is not a blanket copyright or publicity-rights license. Before publishing, consider copyright ownership, identifiable people, trademarks, music licensing, privacy, and the context in which you are using the post. Preserve the visible attribution and link, and obtain permission when your use is sensitive, commercial, or outside ordinary commentary and reference. Instagram’s control merely determines whether the platform permits the display mechanism.
Does embedding notify the creator or increase views?
Embedding is primarily a website-display function. Do not assume that copying embed code sends the creator a notification; notification behavior can vary and is not promised here.
An embed can give website visitors a route to the original account, but it does not automatically increase views, followers, likes, or comments. Results depend on whether the embed loads, page traffic and placement, visitor login status, available interactions, Instagram’s rendering behavior, and the content remaining public.
What an embed means for website owners
- Attribution: The display keeps a visible connection to the original Instagram account.
- Control: You avoid manually uploading a separate copy, but Instagram controls continued availability and presentation.
- Performance: External scripts or resources can affect page speed, privacy expectations, or security policies.
- Maintenance: A privacy change, deletion, setting change, or platform update can break the display.
- Responsive design: Test your theme’s mobile layout; native blocks may size content differently from raw code.
For a current account-visibility reference, see Instagram’s Controlling Your Visibility guidance. Menu labels and embed behavior can change as Instagram updates its service.
