The PS5’s custom AMD Zen 2 processor is closest on paper to a Ryzen 7 3700X: both have eight Zen 2 CPU cores. That is a useful architectural comparison, not a claim that the chips perform identically. Depending on the game and workload, PS5 gaming performance may also overlap with a Ryzen 5 3600.

PS5 CPU specifications

Sony identifies the PS5 processor as a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU with eight cores and a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz. The CPU and GPU are part of the console’s custom processor design. Sony does not give it a retail Ryzen model name or publish a desktop-style specification sheet with a thread count or detailed cache configuration. Sony’s PS5 FAQ and its hardware specifications describe the CPU as custom Zen 2 hardware.

Specification PS5 CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
Architecture Custom AMD Zen 2 AMD Zen 2
Cores and threads 8 cores; Sony does not state a thread count in its public specification 8 cores / 16 threads
Clock specification Variable frequency, up to 3.5 GHz 3.6 GHz base; up to 4.4 GHz boost
Design Custom console SoC, with CPU and GPU integrated in the same processor design Desktop CPU; requires a discrete graphics card
Power specification Console-specific system design; no desktop CPU TDP stated 65 W default TDP

Ryzen 7 3700X specifications are listed by AMD. The clock figures are not directly interchangeable: the PS5 figure is a variable maximum, while AMD lists a base and boost clock for the desktop chip.

Why the Ryzen 7 3700X is the closest paper match

The 3700X is a helpful comparison because it shares the Zen 2 generation and eight-core configuration. If “comparable” means architecture and core count, it is the clearest familiar desktop reference. It is not evidence that a 3700X has the same performance in every game or workload as the PS5 processor.

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Prism LED Cooler
  • The world's most advanced processor in the desktop PC gaming segment
  • Can deliver ultra-fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games
  • 8 Cores and 16 processing threads bundled with the AMD Wraith Prism cooler with color controlled LED support
  • 4 4 GHz max Boost unlocked for overclocking 36 MB of game Cache DDR4 3200 MHz system memory specification
  • For the advanced socket AM4 platform can support PCIe 4 0 on x570 motherboards. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax)- 95°C

The distinction matters because a desktop 3700X runs in a PC with a separate graphics card, motherboard, memory, operating system, and power and cooling setup. The PS5 is a fixed console design with its own system constraints. AMD publishes the 3700X’s 16-thread count, 3.6 GHz base clock, boost up to 4.4 GHz, and 65 W default TDP; Sony’s public PS5 specification does not provide the same set of desktop-style details.

Why there is no exact PC equivalent

  • Custom design: Sony describes a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU, not a retail Ryzen chip installed unchanged in the console.
  • Different clock behavior: The PS5 is specified at a variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz, rather than the desktop processor’s base-and-boost model.
  • Different platform: The console’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and system software work as one known platform. A PC’s behavior depends on its full hardware and software configuration.
  • Game optimization: Console developers target a defined hardware configuration. PC games must accommodate many processors, graphics cards, drivers, and system setups.
  • Workload matters: Core count alone does not predict frame rates. Clock speed, per-core performance, cache, scheduling, graphics settings, and whether a game is CPU- or GPU-limited all affect results.

For those reasons, descriptions such as “the PS5 has a Ryzen 7 3700X inside” are inaccurate. “Broadly comparable in architecture and core count” is the safer description.

Could a Ryzen 5 3600 be a closer gaming comparison?

Sometimes, depending on what is being compared. The Ryzen 5 3600 is a Zen 2 desktop CPU with six cores and 12 threads, a 3.6 GHz base clock, and boost up to 4.2 GHz. AMD’s product specifications are available on its Ryzen 5 3600 page.

Its Zen 2-era per-core characteristics and clock range make it a plausible comparison for some CPU-limited gaming situations. But the PS5’s eight-core design makes the 3700X the cleaner specification match, while neither desktop processor is a guaranteed match for PS5 performance. Results depend on the game, frame-rate target, background processes, PC configuration, and graphics settings.

What would a PC need to match PS5 gaming?

A CPU comparison alone cannot tell you whether a PC will deliver PS5-like results. The PS5’s gaming performance comes from the complete system: its CPU, GPU, 16 GB of unified GDDR6 memory, storage subsystem, operating-system overhead, game engine, and the developer’s optimization. Resolution, frame-rate mode, ray tracing, and other graphics settings also shape what a game delivers.

A PC aiming for a similar experience therefore needs an appropriately capable discrete GPU as well as a suitable CPU, enough system memory, SSD storage, and a compatible motherboard and power supply. The target game and settings matter: a PC configuration that is CPU-limited in one title may be GPU-limited in another. A Ryzen 7 3700X by itself says little about whole-system performance.

How to use the comparison when reading PC requirements

If a PC game lists a Ryzen 5 3600 or Ryzen 7 3700X, do not translate that requirement directly into “this is what the PS5 has.” A PC port may use different settings or engine paths, PC requirements may allow headroom for background services and varied hardware, and console and PC versions may distribute work differently across threads. A GPU limit can also obscure CPU differences.

Use the PS5 comparison as a rough reference for the CPU generation and class, not as a strict minimum- or recommended-spec conversion. A newer Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 may be substantially faster than these Zen 2 examples; the product tier or core count alone does not make it equivalent to the PS5.

Should you buy a Ryzen 7 3700X for PS5-like performance?

Not solely because it is the closest familiar paper comparison. The 3700X is an older AM4 desktop processor, and a new PC requires a graphics card and the rest of a compatible system. For a new build, compare current processors and platforms against your games, resolution and frame-rate goals, upgrade plans, and total system cost rather than trying to recreate the PS5’s CPU by model name.

It can make more sense as an upgrade if you already have a compatible AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory, but the best choice depends on your specific system and the processor’s current availability and price. Do not assume any eight-core Ryzen is equivalent: processor generation, per-core performance, clocks, cache, power limits, and software all matter.
