--service-request-channel-token=<value> is an internal Chromium child-process argument. It supplies a lookup token that Chromium uses to recover a service message pipe from a Mojo invitation during process startup. It is not a website option, a Headless rendering setting, a URL, or a documented credential.
If you saw it in an older Headless Chrome command line, the most useful interpretation is “internal IPC plumbing.” The Chromium switch index records this switch as removed on 2022-08-14, so the browser version and Chromium fork matter when interpreting a current or historical process listing.
What the argument does
Chromium is split into a browser process and several child processes, including renderers and services. Those processes communicate through Mojo, Chromium’s inter-process communication (IPC) system. A child must receive the right communication endpoint when it starts; otherwise it cannot connect to the service the browser assigned to it.
The Chromium source comment for this switch describes its purpose as: “The token to use to construct the message pipe for a service in a child process.” In implementation terms, startup code reads the command-line value, uses it as a key while processing an incoming Mojo invitation, and extracts the corresponding message pipe. The token therefore identifies which pipe the child should use; it does not configure the page being rendered.

What “message pipe” means here
A Mojo message pipe is an IPC channel with endpoints used by separate processes. One endpoint is held by the browser or service infrastructure and the other is delivered to the child. The token lets the child locate the endpoint intended for it when the invitation arrives. This is process bootstrap information, not an HTTP request parameter and not JavaScript exposed to the site.
Why the value can look like a number
A process listing may show a short numeric-looking value or another token string after the equals sign. The available Chromium material establishes that the value is used as a lookup key. It does not establish that the value is a password, cryptographically random secret, access token, or other credential. Treating its visual appearance as proof of any of those properties would be unwarranted.
Why it appears in Headless Chrome listings
A 2019 user report showed a renderer command line containing --type=renderer, --headless, and --service-request-channel-token. That observation explains why people associate the switch with Headless Chrome, but it does not make the argument Headless-only.
Headless mode still launches Chromium child processes and still needs the same browser-to-child startup plumbing. If a renderer or service process is started with this argument, it is because the process-launch path supplied the IPC information it needs. The presence of --headless beside the switch describes that particular invocation; it does not define the switch’s scope.

Renderer does not mean webpage-controlled
The --type=renderer label identifies a Chromium child process that renders content. It does not mean the web page inserted the switch or can read the token. Command-line construction occurs outside the page’s JavaScript execution environment, as part of Chromium’s process management.

It is not a screenshot or rendering control
The argument does not select a viewport, device scale factor, output format, navigation behavior, JavaScript policy, or PDF setting. Changing it is not a supported way to alter a screenshot. Those controls belong to the browser automation or capture API that launches Chromium, while this switch belongs to Chromium’s internal service connection.
Removal history and version context
The Chromium command-line switch index records --service-request-channel-token as removed on 2022-08-14 and identifies its former source location as services/service_manager/embedder/switches.cc. This is a historical status entry, not a guarantee that every Chromium-based product removed an identical internal mechanism on the same day.
The cited material does not identify the exact first or last Chrome release that carried the switch. Downstream Chromium forks can also change internal switches independently. Consequently, interpret a sighting using the executable’s version, build channel, and vendor rather than assuming that a command line from one release describes all Chrome versions.

- Record the executable and version from the same environment that produced the process listing. For Chrome, open chrome://version; for an automated installation, use the browser binary’s own
--versionoutput where supported. - Save the complete parent command line and child command line, including
--type,--headless, profile paths, and any wrapper arguments. A launcher may add or remove arguments before Chromium starts. - Note whether the binary is Google Chrome, Chromium, or a vendor fork. The 2022-08-14 index entry is about the indexed Chromium switch, not a promise about every fork.
- Compare the observation with the release date and build information. An older listing can legitimately contain a switch that later builds no longer display.
Should you remove or set it?
Normally, no. The argument is generated for Chromium’s child-process startup path. Removing it from a manually assembled command line can leave the child without the information required to connect to its service, producing a startup failure or a process that cannot perform its assigned work.
Adding an arbitrary value is equally inappropriate. The value must correspond to the IPC invitation created by the browser/service infrastructure. A random string, a copied value from another process, or a value taken from an unrelated run is not a supported configuration.

When command-line filtering is involved
Some automation wrappers, sandbox launchers, monitoring tools, and security policies filter arguments. If a wrapper strips the switch, compare the wrapper’s final child command line with the command line generated by launching the browser directly through the supported automation interface. Fix the wrapper or launcher configuration rather than trying to invent a replacement token.
Security interpretation
The available implementation description does not classify the value as a secret or credential. Do not publish it as a password, rotate it as though it were an API key, or report it as a vulnerability solely because it is visible in a process listing. A security assessment would require separate evidence about who can read the process list, how the token is generated, and what an attacker could do with it.

Seeing the switch by itself is usually an identification question, not an error. Use the surrounding symptoms to decide whether further action is needed.
| Observation | Likely interpretation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The switch appears and the browser works normally | Normal internal child-process startup for that build | Record the browser version if you need an audit trail; do not edit the value |
| The switch appears only in an older capture | Consistent with the indexed removal history | Keep the original version and date with the capture |
| A child exits immediately after a wrapper removes arguments | The launch path may have removed required IPC setup | Disable argument filtering or use the supported launcher |
| A copied command line fails when run manually | Child-process arguments depend on a matching browser-created invitation | Launch through Chrome automation instead of replaying the child command |
| You suspect credential exposure | The cited sources do not establish that this token is a credential | Investigate process-list permissions and the specific build; do not infer compromise from the name alone |
Capture the evidence without changing it
For an incident report or reproducibility record, preserve the full command line, process ID, parent process ID, executable path, browser version, operating system, and timestamp. Redact unrelated credentials that may appear in the same command line, but do not replace this switch with a made-up value and then present the edited line as original evidence.
Common misconceptions
“It is a Headless-only flag.”
No. The dated Headless example proves that it appeared in at least one Headless renderer listing. The source description defines a child-process service connection, which is broader than Headless rendering.

“It controls the page’s service worker.”
No. “Service” in the source comment refers to Chromium’s process and Mojo service infrastructure. It is not a web service worker, a server endpoint, or a page-level API.
“The number is an authentication token.”
That conclusion is not supported by the cited material. The documented role is selecting a message pipe from a Mojo invitation.
“Removing it makes screenshots cleaner or safer.”
There is no evidence that it affects visual output, cookies, network requests, or page privacy. It is an IPC startup argument and should be left to Chromium’s launcher.

If your goal is to obtain a website image, you do not need to manage Chromium’s child-process command line yourself. ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server; its capture request abstracts away browser process setup. It is not the source or owner of Chromium’s internal switch, and using it does not require you to set --service-request-channel-token.
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Failed loads, bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI clients.

Practical conclusion
--service-request-channel-token is best read as an internal Chromium IPC handoff value. It helps a child process locate the service message pipe associated with its browser-created Mojo invitation. A 2019 Headless renderer listing shows the switch in use, while the Chromium switch index records it as removed on 2022-08-14. Do not treat the value as a website setting, a screenshot control, or a credential, and do not manually alter it unless you are developing Chromium’s process infrastructure itself.
Or skip the browser setup
For a direct screenshot request, use ScreenshotNeo’s API instead of assembling a browser command line:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this switch expose the token to websites?
No. It is a Chromium child-process argument used during browser IPC setup, outside the webpage’s JavaScript and network request model.
Can I determine the exact Chrome release that removed it?
The available switch index records removal on 2022-08-14 but does not establish the exact first or last Chrome release containing it. Check the executable version and vendor fork for a specific sighting.
What should I do if a security scanner flags the argument?
Treat the flag as a lead for version and process-permission review, not proof of a credential or vulnerability. The cited implementation description identifies a Mojo message-pipe lookup role only.
