You can configure an embedded design editor at four levels: how users find or start designs, which editor and canvas controls they see, which assets and templates are available, and how they export the result. Adobe Express Embedded Design Editor (EDE) exposes these controls through Create Design and Edit Design workflows, with additional settings for print production and opening an existing document.
The four configuration layers
Before integrating an editor, separate configuration into four decisions. This prevents a common mistake: trying to solve template governance with export settings, or trying to solve print production with iframe styling.
- Starting and browsing: decide whether users begin with a curated template set or a blank canvas, and what they can search.
- Editor and canvas: choose the workflow variant, initial panel, asset collection, canvas type, and page behavior.
- Assets and brand boundaries: constrain collections, template types, filters, and related-content discovery.
- Publishing: allow only the file types and export actions your application can process, then handle publish, error, and cancel events.
Edit Design adds a fifth practical concern: document configuration for loading an existing design, plus print-production settings such as guides and PDF color options.
Control how users start and browse
Curated templates or a blank canvas
In the Create Design workflow, you can open a curated template collection or offer a blank-canvas option. This lets an application support either a guided, brand-controlled experience or an unrestricted starting point.

Use contentBrowseConfig as the discovery boundary
Adobe describes contentBrowseConfig as the heart of Create Design. It can select a collection, apply template filters, set a header label, hide the search bar or filters, and disable premium content. Filters can target:
- Behavior
- Dimensions
- Template type
For a campaign tool, for example, you could direct users to an approved collection, suppress unrelated filters, and prevent premium content from appearing in the embedded flow. These are discovery controls; they do not replace your own authorization or content-review process.
Hide “more like this” content when necessary
Create Design can hide related “more like this” content. That is useful when users must stay within a narrow brand system rather than branching into the wider template catalog.
Shape the editor and canvas
Choose the workflow variant
The variant setting selects either the general-purpose default experience or the print-oriented print experience. Adobe says this property determines which creative tools the editor surfaces, including text, images, shapes, icons, and other design elements. The print variant is intended for print-ready work and can use print-friendly defaults such as bleed and crop marks.

Open on the right panel
Use selectedCategory to choose the initially selected panel. Use categorySearchText to prefill that panel’s search context. Together, these settings can take a user directly to the asset type relevant to the task instead of making them navigate the entire editor.
Constrain assets and canvas type
assetCollection can direct the editor to a constrained asset collection. templateType sets the canvas template type. These controls are useful for a branded application or a workflow that supports only a defined class of designs.
Choose single-page or multi-page behavior
The multiPage setting controls page behavior and defaults to true. Set the experience deliberately: a social-card generator may need one page, while a brochure, presentation, or catalog requires multiple pages.
Limit templates, assets, and file choices
Template governance normally combines the browsing settings with editor settings. A practical configuration checklist is:

These settings narrow what users see and how they begin. Your host application should still validate the resulting design and enforce any business rules before accepting a publish event.
Control exports and host callbacks
Restrict file formats with allowedFileTypes
The documented default supported formats are PNG, JPEG, MP4, and PDF. allowedFileTypes lets the host narrow that list. If your downstream system accepts only PDF, expose only PDF; if it stores animated output, retain MP4 as appropriate.
Define visible export actions with exportConfig
exportConfig controls the buttons or dropdown actions shown in the iframe. Those actions can include publishing, downloading, or continuing to another destination. Keep the visible actions consistent with what your backend can actually receive and process.
Handle the lifecycle
Use callbacks such as onPublish, onError, and onCancel to connect the iframe to your application:

onPublish: receive the completed result and start storage, review, or downstream production.onError: show a useful recovery message and record the failure for diagnosis.onCancel: return the user to the host workflow without treating cancellation as a failed export.
containerConfig controls how the SDK iframe is presented. Treat it as the integration boundary for sizing and placement, while keeping product rules in the editor configuration and callbacks.
Open and edit an existing design
Edit Design requires a document configuration so an existing document can be opened. This is the right workflow when users are revising a saved design rather than choosing a new template. Plan the handoff so your host application knows which document is being edited and where the resulting publish event should return.
Print guides on the canvas
Edit Design’s print-specific settings can show bleed, margins, and rulers on the canvas. These guides help users position content for physical production instead of judging only the screen edge.
Print-ready PDF settings
PDF print settings can include crop marks, bleed, and CMYK color mode. A supported CMYK profile can include “Coated GRACoL 2006 (ISO 12647-2:2004).” Select these options only when the print workflow requires them; a screen-first PDF may not need production marks or CMYK conversion.

Implementation sequence and failure checks
- Define the user journey. Decide whether the flow is Create Design or Edit Design, and whether it is screen-oriented or print-oriented.
- Set discovery limits. Configure the collection, filters, labels, and visibility restrictions before styling the container.
- Set canvas behavior. Choose the variant, initial panel, search text, asset collection, template type, and page mode.
- Design the export contract. List the formats your server accepts, then configure
allowedFileTypesandexportConfigto match. - Wire callbacks. Test successful publish, cancellation, and an error response separately.
- Validate print output. For physical production, verify bleed, crop marks, margins, rulers, CMYK mode, and the selected profile.
- Test restrictive cases. Confirm that hidden search or filters stay hidden, a single-page flow cannot unexpectedly expand, and unsupported export formats are unavailable.

- Users see too many templates: check the selected collection, filters, and “more like this” visibility.
- The wrong panel opens: verify
