If the device you’re connecting supports WPS, press the WPS button on your Xfinity Gateway after starting WPS setup on that device. The two steps must happen within two minutes. For most phones, tablets and computers, you don’t need to press a button on the router: select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password instead.
Connect with the Xfinity WPS button
WPS means Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Xfinity calls its button-based method Push Button Configuration (PBC). It is an optional shortcut for devices that offer a WPS setup option; it is not a universal way to connect every Wi-Fi device.
- Turn on the device you want to connect and open its Wi-Fi or network setup.
- Choose WPS, Connect by WPS or Push Button Setup, if the device offers one.
- Within two minutes, press the WPS button on the Xfinity Gateway. Press the button marked WPS or showing the WPS symbol; don’t guess based on its position.
- Wait for the device to confirm it joined the network, then check that it can get online.
The device must support WPS, and its setup instructions may specify the order of steps. Xfinity’s WPS instructions describe the two-minute pairing window.
Where to find the WPS button
The location depends on the gateway model. Xfinity’s illustrations show the WPS button near the center on the XB7 and XB8, and toward the upper-left area on the XB6. Older Wireless Gateways have different layouts, so don’t rely on one location for every model.

On XB7 and XB8 gateways, Xfinity documents a slowly blinking blue light during WPS pairing and a return to white for normal operation afterward. The XB6 also uses a blue blinking state during pairing and white after completion. These light indications are model-specific, not a rule for every Xfinity gateway.
To identify your equipment, check the label on its bottom, your Xfinity account’s Devices area or the Xfinity app. Xfinity’s gateway overview lists models and features, while its manuals and safety sheets can help you confirm the layout. “Xfinity router” might mean an Xfinity gateway, a customer-owned router, or a separate modem and router; the relevant WPS button, if available, is on the device providing Wi-Fi.

Don’t confuse WPS with power or reset

Press only the control labeled WPS or marked with the WPS symbol. Avoid pressing Reset to troubleshoot a pairing problem; a factory reset is a separate, model-specific procedure, not a Wi-Fi shortcut.
Connect without pressing a router button
If your phone, tablet, computer or other device has no WPS option, use the standard Wi-Fi setup:

- Open the device’s Wi-Fi settings.
- Select your home network’s name (SSID).
- Enter the Wi-Fi password and confirm.
During gateway activation, Xfinity lets you create or configure the Wi-Fi name and password. After setup, you can generally find those details in the Xfinity app. See Xfinity’s gateway activation instructions and xFi FAQs for account and Wi-Fi information.
If WPS does not work
- Check that the device actually offers WPS, and follow its instructions for starting the process.
- Move it closer to the gateway, start WPS on the device, then press the gateway’s WPS button within two minutes.
- If pairing fails, restart the device’s Wi-Fi and try once more.
- If it still fails—or the device has no WPS option—connect with the Wi-Fi name and password instead.
- If you can’t identify the button or confirm the gateway’s behavior, check the manual for that exact model. Contact Xfinity if the gateway is not broadcasting Wi-Fi or has not been activated.
If the Xfinity gateway is in Bridge Mode, a separate router may be providing Wi-Fi. In that setup, use the third-party router’s instructions and WPS control, if it has one; the Xfinity gateway may not be the device your client needs to pair with. Xfinity also says its Pro WiFi Extender is activated through the Xfinity app and requires the gateway not to be in Bridge Mode. Follow the Pro WiFi Extender instructions rather than assuming every extender pairs through gateway WPS.

A modem-only device does not provide Wi-Fi or WPS. If you have a separate modem and router, mesh system or access point, identify which device is actually broadcasting the network before trying to pair.
New Xfinity Gateway? Activate it first
WPS pairing does not activate Xfinity service or configure a new gateway. Connect the coaxial cable from the wall to the gateway, plug it into power and wait for its lights to come on and stop blinking. Then open the Xfinity app, sign in with your Xfinity ID and follow the activation instructions.
