In the usual industry convention, the ninth-generation consoles are Sony’s PlayStation 5 family and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S family. Xbox Series X and Series S launched on November 10, 2020; PlayStation 5 followed on November 12 in the United States and selected markets, with wider availability later that month.
The original Nintendo Switch is generally classified as an eighth-generation system. Nintendo Switch 2, released in 2025, is the awkward case: it is a new Nintendo platform active during the PS5/Xbox Series era, but there is no official authority that assigns one universal generation number to every manufacturer.
What “console generation” means
A console generation is an informal industry label for a major wave of hardware platforms. A new generation normally brings a substantially different baseline for graphics, processing, storage, controllers, operating systems and software services. It is usually defined by platform-family launches, not by every color, storage option or redesigned shell.

Journalists, researchers, publishers and fans can apply the labels differently. Generations also overlap: new consoles may run older games, and many early releases target both old and new hardware. The Federal Trade Commission describes console generations as appearing roughly every five to 10 years, but that is an observed pattern rather than a rule (FTC market analysis).

PlayStation 5 family explained
The PS5 platform family includes the original disc-drive console, the PS5 Digital Edition, slimmer revisions of both configurations and the PlayStation 5 Pro. These are different models of one platform generation, not separate generations.
Sony’s launch-era architecture combines a custom AMD Zen 2-based CPU, an RDNA 2-derived graphics design, high-speed internal SSD storage, hardware ray-tracing support and a DualSense controller with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Sony also highlights Tempest 3D AudioTech, faster loading and compatibility with thousands of PS4 games (Sony’s PS5 history).
Backward compatibility is not identical for every title. Individual games can have missing PS4 features or different behavior on PS5, so “PS4 compatible” should not be read as a guarantee that every game receives the same enhancement (Sony compatibility documentation).

- Disc PS5: includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for physical games and films.
- Digital Edition: omits the optical drive and relies on downloads, though compatible newer designs can support an optional drive.
- PS5 Slim: a smaller hardware revision within the same PS5 family.
- PS5 Pro: a higher-performance PS5-family refresh, generally grouped within the ninth generation rather than treated as a new generation.
PS5 games commonly offer quality and performance modes. A quality mode may favor resolution, detail and ray-traced effects; a performance mode may target smoother frame rates at a lower or dynamically adjusted resolution. A “4K” output or “120Hz” mode is therefore a supported capability, not a promise that every game renders natively at 4K and 120 frames per second.
Xbox Series X and Series S explained
Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are one generation with two performance tiers. Microsoft launched both on November 10, 2020, describing them as the start of a new generation (Microsoft’s launch announcement).

Xbox Series X
Series X is the premium model. Microsoft lists an eight-core custom Zen 2 CPU, an RDNA 2-based GPU rated at 12 teraflops, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a custom NVMe SSD and 2.4GB/s raw I/O throughput (4.8GB/s compressed) (official specifications). Supported games can target 4K output, ray tracing and up to 120 frames per second, subject to the game and display.
Models include disc and digital configurations, plus higher-capacity variants. A 2TB model is still a Series X platform, not a new generation.

Xbox Series S
Series S is smaller, all-digital and less powerful. It is designed around a 1440p-class target, but actual resolution varies by game and display. The 512GB and 1TB versions share the Series S platform and have no disc drive. Lower graphics performance, limited usable storage on the 512GB model and the cost of expansion make it a different trade-off from Series X, not a different generation.
Both consoles use Xbox Velocity Architecture, support Quick Resume, cloud saves, digital purchases and Xbox services. Microsoft’s comparison page also details Game Pass integration, online multiplayer and cross-device features (Xbox comparison). Quick Resume can suspend several compatible games, although the exact behavior depends on the title and system state.
What changed from the eighth generation?
SSD-first storage
High-speed solid-state storage became a defining feature. It can shorten loading, accelerate fast travel and help developers stream larger quantities of game data. Xbox Quick Resume makes the storage and system software change especially visible. It does not mean every game loads instantly or removes every loading screen; patches, game design and storage configuration still matter.

Ray tracing and selectable performance modes
Both platform families support hardware-accelerated ray tracing in compatible games. Ray tracing can improve reflections, shadows and lighting, but it consumes performance. Developers consequently offer a choice between visual-quality and higher-frame-rate modes.
Reconstruction and dynamic resolution
Many games render below a fixed native resolution and reconstruct the image to the display’s output resolution. Distinguish native resolution (rendered directly), dynamic resolution (changes during play), reconstructed or upscaled resolution and the display’s final output signal.
Services are part of the platform
The generation made subscription libraries, digital storefronts, cloud saves, remote play, streaming, cross-play and cross-progression central to the console experience. Game Pass is particularly integrated across Xbox consoles and PC, although its catalog, pricing and day-one policies depend on the current plan.
Cross-generation software
Many launch-period PS5 and Xbox Series games also shipped on PS4 or Xbox One. That softened the visible break between generations. Hardware generation and software exclusivity are related, but they are not the same thing.
Is the original Nintendo Switch ninth generation?
Usually, no. The original Switch launched in March 2017 and is commonly treated as Nintendo’s eighth-generation successor to Wii U. The FTC explicitly excluded Switch from the ninth-generation category in its market analysis (FTC report).

Some readers include it because Switch remained commercially important while PS5 and Xbox Series X|S were on sale, and its 2021 OLED model arrived after those consoles. That is a chronological or market-overlap interpretation. The more common platform-family interpretation considers its launch date, architecture and position as Nintendo’s Wii U successor.
Is Nintendo Switch 2 ninth or tenth generation?
There is no universally binding answer. Switch 2 is a distinct successor platform, and Nintendo’s support materials document compatibility rules between Switch 2 and the original Switch, including virtual game cards, accessories and game-specific differences (Nintendo compatibility guidance; hardware and accessory guidance).
Under one convention, Switch 2 can be discussed alongside ninth-generation systems because it launched during the PS5/Xbox Series era. Under another, it begins a new Nintendo-specific generation after Switch. A third approach avoids assigning Nintendo hardware the same number as Sony and Microsoft at all.
The careful description is therefore: Switch 2 is a new Nintendo platform whose generation label is contested. Calling it definitively ninth or definitively tenth generation presents a convention as if it were an official standard.
Are PS5 Pro and upgraded Xbox models new generations?
Not in normal usage. A new generation generally introduces a new platform family and baseline software target. A refresh improves the existing family while retaining its operating system, game library and compatibility model.

Performance tiers do not create separate generations: Series S is not an eighth-generation console merely because it is weaker than Series X, and a digital-only PS5 is not a different generation because it lacks a disc drive.
How long does the ninth generation last?
There is no official end date. A generation normally continues while its main platforms receive games, updates and commercial support. The arrival of a successor does not instantly make the older platform irrelevant, and cross-generation releases can extend its practical life. As of 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S remain the standard reference point for the ninth generation.
Which platform fits which buyer?
- Choose PS5 if you prioritize PlayStation franchises, DualSense features, PS4 compatibility or the option of physical games.
- Choose Xbox Series X if you want the higher-end Xbox hardware, a disc drive on an applicable model, Quick Resume, backward compatibility and Game Pass integration.
- Choose Xbox Series S if low entry cost, a compact design and digital Game Pass access matter more than 4K-class performance. Account for limited storage and the lack of a disc drive.
- Choose Switch or Switch 2 if portability, handheld/docked play, Nintendo software and local multiplayer matter more than maximum graphics performance.
Also consider your display, broadband reliability, storage needs, preference for ownership versus subscriptions and whether you already own games in a particular ecosystem.
Bottom line
The conservative answer is straightforward: the ninth-generation consoles are the PlayStation 5 family and Xbox Series X|S family. The original Nintendo Switch is generally eighth generation. Nintendo Switch 2 is a genuine successor platform, but its place in the numbered ninth-generation scheme remains a matter of convention rather than settled fact. PS5 Pro, PS5 Slim and newer Xbox storage models are refreshes within the same generation.
