“We’re Archiving Yahoo Answers So You’ll Always Know How Babby Is Formed” was a real Gizmodo article, published on April 9, 2021, during Yahoo Answers’ final month. Written by Shoshana Wodinsky and Dhruv Mehrotra, it described an emergency effort to preserve the question-and-answer site before Yahoo shut it down. The preservation succeeded in saving a substantial amount of material, but not a complete copy of Yahoo Answers.
The famous “Babby Is Formed” phrase referred to one of Yahoo Answers’ best-known misspelled questions about human reproduction. Gizmodo used it as shorthand for the site’s strange, funny and distinctly human internet folklore. The broader story, however, was about something more serious: how quickly a large record of everyday online life can disappear when a privately operated service closes.
What the Gizmodo article was about
Gizmodo’s article reported on attempts to archive Yahoo Answers after Yahoo announced that the service would close. It was published on April 9, 2021, just weeks before the site went offline.
The article described two related but separate preservation efforts:

- A Gizmodo project, developed with help from the Internet Archive, that submitted Yahoo Answers pages to the Wayback Machine.
- A larger volunteer operation organized by Archive Team to crawl and preserve as much of the service as possible before shutdown.
Those efforts are sometimes described as though one organization simply copied the entire website. That is not accurate. Gizmodo’s script created a representative sample, while Archive Team conducted the larger emergency preservation project. The Internet Archive and Archive Team also played different roles: the Internet Archive operates digital-library services such as the Wayback Machine, while Archive Team is a volunteer collective that organizes preservation projects.
What Yahoo Answers was
Yahoo Answers was a user-generated question-and-answer service that launched publicly in 2005. Users asked questions, submitted answers, selected or voted on “best answers” and earned points or levels through participation. Yahoo’s archived service information and product tour describe the basic system.
The site covered almost every part of ordinary life: health, schoolwork, technology, pets, relationships, politics, entertainment, religion, shopping and personal problems. It was a low-barrier advice service, meaning that people could ask questions they might not have known how to research elsewhere.

That openness produced a volatile mixture. Some answers were practical and sincere. Others were inaccurate, incomplete, sarcastic or deliberately misleading. Poor spelling and grammar were common, as were jokes and trolling. Yahoo Answers was neither uniformly useful nor uniformly worthless; its importance came partly from preserving the unpolished questions and informal knowledge of millions of participants.
Why Yahoo Answers shut down
Yahoo announced the closure on April 5, 2021, saying that Yahoo Answers had become less popular over time. The available announcement did not provide a detailed explanation of every business, moderation or technical factor behind the decline, so it is safest to describe reduced popularity as Yahoo’s stated reason.
The final timetable was:

The shutdown notice and contemporary reporting are preserved in Yahoo’s archived information and a Yahoo/USA TODAY report. Users could request their own questions and answers, but Yahoo’s export was not a public download of the entire service. It did not create a browsable copy containing every user’s answers, profiles, comments, rankings, images and site navigation. The request window has long since closed.
How Gizmodo tried to preserve the site
Gizmodo used Yahoo Answers’ sitemap to discover approximately 84 million question pages. That number needs careful interpretation. It was the approximate number of questions exposed through the sitemap used by Gizmodo’s process, not a verified count of every question ever posted and not proof that every question had been found.
The intended workflow was to submit discovered pages to the Internet Archive. But the crawl was too slow to process the entire list before Yahoo Answers disappeared. Gizmodo estimated that processing the set at roughly one second per question would take at least two and a half years—far longer than the remaining weeks.

Instead of pretending that a complete copy was possible, the project submitted pages at random to create what it described as a representative sample. At the time of publication, Gizmodo said it had saved approximately 5,500 questions.
This illustrates one of the central problems in emergency web archiving: discovering a page is not the same as preserving it. A sitemap can identify URLs, but each URL still has to be fetched, stored and associated with its assets. A site can disappear before a crawler reaches all of its entries.
Archive Team’s larger preservation project
Archive Team had attempted to preserve Yahoo Answers before the final shutdown. Its project documentation describes an earlier effort in 2016–2017 and a renewed project after Yahoo announced the closure in 2021.

This distributed approach allowed many people to contribute computing resources and network capacity rather than relying on one crawler operating from one location.
The project completed its run, but Archive Team’s documentation also makes the important qualification that a complete capture was not possible. Many pages likely remained unarchived.
Archive Team and the Internet Archive are not the same organization
The names are often blended together because the projects can cooperate and because preserved material may ultimately be accessible through Internet Archive infrastructure. Their functions are different:
- Archive Team is a volunteer preservation collective that organizes emergency captures of threatened websites.
- The Internet Archive is a nonprofit digital library that operates services including the Wayback Machine.
Gizmodo’s submissions to the Wayback Machine, Archive Team’s broader crawl and the Internet Archive’s role in making some archived pages accessible should therefore be treated as connected but distinct parts of the preservation story.

Was all of Yahoo Answers archived?
No. The most defensible conclusion is that a large amount of Yahoo Answers data was preserved, but no available source supports calling the result a complete archive or a perfect mirror of the service.

Archive Team explicitly says that a complete capture was not possible. That means the surviving material should be understood as substantial preservation, not total recovery.
Archive-related summaries often cite approximately 4.75 TB of captured data. That figure should be treated cautiously and attributed to those summaries, rather than presented as a definitive Archive Team completeness measure. A terabyte figure cannot tell us what percentage of Yahoo Answers survived. It does not establish that all questions, answers, images, profiles, comments, rankings, metadata or search pages were captured.
There are several ordinary technical reasons why a large crawl can still be incomplete:

- Rate limits or other restrictions can slow automated requests.
- Not every page is necessarily exposed through a sitemap.
- Dynamic, paginated or region-specific content can be difficult to discover.
- Deleted, private, age-restricted or moderation-removed pages may not be fetchable.
- Images, stylesheets and linked resources may be stored separately—or not at all.
- Broken links, duplicate URLs, redirects and regional versions complicate crawling.
- Volunteer projects depend on available participants, bandwidth and storage.
These are general web-archiving constraints, not a claim that every factor caused a particular missing Yahoo Answers page.
Four different meanings of “archived”
The word “archived” can conceal important differences. For Yahoo Answers, it is useful to distinguish four levels:
- URL-level capture: a particular page was fetched and stored.
- Page-plus-assets capture: the text and some related images, stylesheets or resources were preserved.
- Crawl-level preservation: a substantial body of pages was collected through automated crawling.
- Complete service reconstruction: questions, answers, profiles, search, categories, rankings, moderation history, media and site behavior all remain available.
The Yahoo Answers effort clearly reached the third level in a meaningful way. The evidence does not justify claiming the fourth.
Can you still access Yahoo Answers?
The original Yahoo Answers service is offline. The normal site shut down on May 4, 2021, and the original address no longer functions as the service it once was.
Some individual pages may still be recoverable through web archives, but availability varies by URL and capture date. A preserved page may also load without its images, comments, profile information, layout or related navigation.

If you are looking for a particular old question, try this process:
- Search the exact old URL in the Wayback Machine.
- If you know it, try the original regional Yahoo Answers subdomain.
- Search the question title in quotation marks.
- Look for screenshots, quoted excerpts or links shared on social media and forums.
- Check old bookmarks, browser history, saved HTML files, Pocket or Wallabag exports and personal backups.
- Expect missing images, broken styles, incomplete pagination and pages that were never captured.
A screenshot can preserve visible wording, but it will not necessarily preserve the author profile, answer ranking, comments, metadata or surrounding discussion. Search snippets can help locate a phrase, but they are not a substitute for the original page or a verified archive.
What “Babby Is Formed” means
“Babby Is Formed” refers to a famously misspelled Yahoo Answers question about human reproduction. The phrase became a widely circulated example of Yahoo Answers’ unintentionally comic spelling, earnestness and lack of polish.

Gizmodo’s headline used the phrase as a cultural reference, not as the literal subject of the article. Other examples associated with Yahoo Answers included questions about “Weggy Boards,” whether One Direction was “real music,” raccoon or beaver bait and “spider has pusspuss.” These examples became memorable because they compressed the site’s peculiar mix of confusion, sincerity and internet humor into a few words.
But reducing Yahoo Answers to a collection of jokes misses why preservation mattered. The site also recorded ordinary anxieties, personal experiences, informal advice and questions that people did not ask in more formal spaces.

Digital culture is not made only of polished journalism, official records and influential social-media posts. It is also made of low-status, everyday material: questions people asked anonymously, arguments that went nowhere, slang, misspellings, folk explanations and practical advice exchanged between strangers.
Yahoo Answers captured a particular stage of online life. It reflected how people searched for information before today’s platform ecosystem became dominant, when a user could ask a broad question and receive a mixture of peer knowledge, speculation and comedy in one place.

Researchers may find evidence of changing language, public anxieties, online behavior and the kinds of information people sought. A bad answer can be historically interesting without being factually correct.

The shutdown also demonstrates the fragility of privately hosted culture. A company can decide that a service is no longer popular enough to maintain, and the public may receive only a few weeks’ notice before a large body of material becomes inaccessible.
Preservation does not make old answers trustworthy
Archived content should not automatically be treated as authoritative. Yahoo Answers contained misinformation, jokes presented as advice and answers that were simply wrong. Old medical, legal, financial or safety-related responses should not be used as current guidance.
There are privacy concerns as well. The service contained questions about health, sexuality, relationships and family problems, including posts that may have involved minors or identifying details. Preserving a page does not erase the ethical questions around resurfacing it. Readers should avoid doxxing, unnecessary republication of sensitive details and treating old personal disclosures as entertainment.
Archives also create context problems. A page may survive without the surrounding conversation that explained whether an answer was serious, sarcastic, corrected or later removed. “Archived” means available evidence exists; it does not mean the original social context has been fully restored.
The lasting lesson of the Yahoo Answers archive
Gizmodo’s 2021 article documented a race against time. Its 84-million figure described sitemap-discovered questions, not a guaranteed total. Its 5,500-page count described the state of Gizmodo’s sample at publication, not the final size of every preservation effort. Archive Team’s later work saved a substantial body of material, but its own documentation makes clear that the capture was incomplete.
So the accurate legacy is neither “Yahoo Answers vanished completely” nor “the whole site was saved.” Much of the service was preserved in different forms, while many pages and associated resources were likely lost.
That is why the “Babby Is Formed” reference still matters. It is funny, but it also points to a larger truth: internet history includes the awkward, mundane and embarrassing material that formal institutions rarely think to preserve. Yahoo Answers was not a perfect source of knowledge. It was, however, a large record of how ordinary people asked questions, shared beliefs and made culture online—and enough of that record survived to show why emergency digital preservation is necessary.
