Verdict: Weebly can still make sense for an existing U.S. site or a simple website that needs basic pages and Square-connected selling. It is a less compelling default for a new site: Square recommends its newer Square Online builder, whose editor and app ecosystem are separate from Weebly’s. In countries covered by Weebly’s 2026 service wind-down, users should treat the platform as a migration issue, not a new-site option.
Weebly review at a glance
- Best for: Existing Weebly sites, simple informational websites, and small stores with straightforward needs.
- Less suitable for: Design-led brands, serious publishing, complex ecommerce, and businesses that want to build on Square’s newer website editor from the start.
- Free option: Yes, but a custom domain requires a paid plan, and the free experience retains platform branding or advertising.
- Main advantage: A relatively simple site-building workflow paired with Square-related selling tools.
- Main concern: Weebly remains available in the U.S., but Square points new website customers toward Square Online.
Weebly is a hosted website builder: it combines a visual page editor, themes, hosting, SSL, basic content and blogging tools, and ecommerce features. Its appeal is convenience rather than maximum control. You can build and publish without separately arranging web hosting or managing a typical self-hosted site’s updates and security.
Its current strategic position matters as much as its feature list. Square acquired Weebly in 2018, and the company now distinguishes the legacy Weebly editor from its newer Square website editor. Square says it has no plans to discontinue the Weebly builder in the U.S., while recommending Square Online for new websites. That statement establishes continued availability, not a promise of investment equal to Square’s newer platform. See Weebly’s U.S. support update and its Weebly and Square FAQ.

Is Weebly shutting down?
Not everywhere. The U.S. support update says Weebly has no plans to discontinue its website builder. A separate official notice sets out a wind-down in 67 named countries; the United States is not among the affected countries identified in the notice. Because service status depends on country, international users should check the notice rather than assume the U.S. position applies to them.
For affected countries, the notice said users would no longer be able to publish new pages from June 29, 2026, that current sites were scheduled to be unpublished on September 27, 2026, and that account access would continue until December 26, 2026. As of September 29, 2026, the scheduled unpublishing date has passed. Affected users should consult Weebly’s global-operations notice for their country’s status and migration instructions.
Weebly pricing and what the plans mean
The following are the prices displayed on Weebly’s U.S. pricing page when reviewed for this article in August 2026. Annual prices are monthly equivalents billed annually; monthly prices are billed month to month. Taxes, domain charges, payment-processing fees, premium apps, and other extras may change the total.
| Plan | Annual billing | Month to month | Positioning shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | $0/month | Basic site with platform branding and limited domain options |
| Personal | $13/month | $16/month | Connect a custom domain |
| Professional | $15/month | $20/month | Additional customization, storage, domain, and branding benefits |
| Performance | $32/month | $36/month | Growth and advanced ecommerce features |
Weebly lists SSL across the displayed plans, and its plan comparison shows ecommerce capabilities at multiple tiers. The differences are in the depth of the tools: advanced store operations, analytics, abandoned-cart emails, reviews, shipping features, and support are concentrated in higher tiers. Check the live U.S. pricing and feature table before subscribing, because availability and terms can vary by market and change over time.

A website plan does not necessarily include everything a business needs. Add the domain and renewal, business email, payment processing, any paid apps or marketing tools, and migration or design work where relevant. Processing fees are separate from the website subscription; their current rates depend on the payment setup and market, so confirm them with Square rather than assuming the plan price covers them.
The free tier is useful for testing the editor or making a low-stakes personal site. It is a poor substitute for a branded business website if you need your own domain or want to remove platform branding. Before choosing a paid tier, match its actual feature table to your needs rather than paying for a higher plan solely because it sounds more business-ready.
How easy is Weebly to use?
Weebly’s appeal is its element-based, drag-and-drop approach. Beginners can assemble standard pages, add common content blocks, and publish from one hosted service. Hosting and SSL are integrated, so the basic setup avoids the separate hosting, plugin, update, and security decisions that come with a self-managed content management system.
The trade-off is control. A simple builder is efficient when the site follows familiar patterns, but a design that needs unusual layouts or a highly distinctive brand treatment may run into theme and page-structure limits. Independent reviews describe Weebly as approachable but more restrictive than some newer visual builders; see Tom’s Guide’s Weebly review. That is a comparative assessment, not a claim that every site will encounter the same limitation.
Be clear about which editor you are evaluating. The legacy Weebly editor uses themes and page elements; Square’s newer editor is based on sections and has a different settings structure. Square says the newer editor does not work with the Weebly App Center. Its setup guidance for new Square sites is at Set Up Your Website with Square Online.
Templates and design flexibility
Weebly themes provide a starting structure for common site types, but the deciding question is how much you need to change that structure. A small service-business site with a home page, service descriptions, contact details, and a few images is a natural fit for a template-led workflow. A brand that depends on precise typography, custom page composition, sophisticated navigation, or a distinctive visual system should test those requirements before committing.
- Check mobile presentation: Review each important page on a phone-sized screen, especially navigation, forms, product details, and calls to action.
- Check changeability: Confirm how the theme handles headers, footers, page layouts, and spacing before building many pages around it.
- Check integrations: A legacy Weebly site may use the Weebly App Center, but those apps should not be assumed to work on a Square-built site.
- Check brand needs: If your design depends on custom code or precise layout control, verify the available options for your specific editor and plan.
Without a controlled, hands-on comparison of current themes, it would be misleading to rank their visual quality as a measured result. The practical point is that Weebly prioritizes accessible assembly over the broader design control many users seek from more flexible builders.
Weebly ecommerce: adequate for simple selling, not every store
Weebly supports online selling, with plan-dependent features that can include shopping carts, unlimited items, product options, inventory management, in-store pickup, automatic tax calculation, coupons, Square Gift Cards, shipping tools, PayPal acceptance, product reviews, shipping labels, and abandoned-cart emails. Confirm the exact features shown for your plan and country on the current plan comparison; the fact that a lower tier permits selling does not mean it includes every tool a growing store will need.
Square is the clearest reason a small merchant might consider Weebly. Square’s business ecosystem connects online sales with tools such as inventory, customer records, payment links, gift cards, invoices, and point of sale. That connection can be useful if the store’s catalog and fulfillment remain straightforward. It does not erase the distinction between the legacy Weebly site and a site built with Square’s newer editor.
Match the platform to the store’s complexity
- A few products or a modest catalog: Weebly may be sufficient if the needed payment, shipping, tax, and inventory features are included in the selected plan.
- A Square-based local retailer: Compare Square Online as well; Square recommends it for new sites and it is the more direct starting point for a Square-centered operation.
- A complex, commerce-first business: Compare dedicated ecommerce platforms before building. Requirements such as advanced merchandising, international selling, subscriptions, or extensive automation may call for a deeper commerce toolset. Verify current capabilities and costs directly before choosing.
Website-plan costs are only one part of selling online. Payment-processing charges, domain costs, and any paid services or apps also matter. Do not treat the word “ecommerce” in a plan table as confirmation that a particular checkout or fulfillment workflow is available in your region.
SEO: useful basics, not a ranking guarantee
Weebly provides the foundations a site owner should manage: useful page titles and descriptions, readable URL slugs, relevant headings and page copy, descriptive image alt text, a mobile-friendly presentation, SSL, and a custom domain on a paid plan. Site statistics and analytics can help monitor activity, but none of these controls guarantees search rankings. Search visibility also depends on the quality and usefulness of the content, the site’s technical setup, and competition for the queries that matter.

Independent coverage characterizes Weebly’s SEO controls as more basic than those on platforms offering deeper optimization options, including around structured data. See TechRadar’s Weebly review. If organic search is central to a content business, investigate the controls you will need before building a large site.

Protect URLs when moving a site
A redesign or platform change can alter page addresses. Make a page-by-page map from old URLs to the closest equivalent new pages, then configure 301 redirects where addresses change. Square documents redirect setup for Square Online at Set Up URL Redirects for Your Square Online Site. Redirects help preserve access to old links and SEO signals, but they do not guarantee that rankings or traffic will transfer unchanged. Also review indexing, sitemap submission, and key pages after launch.
Blogging and content publishing
The legacy Weebly experience may be enough for announcements, occasional updates, or a small organization’s news page. A publication or content-marketing site has different needs: predictable archive behavior, categories and tags, comments, RSS, author information, stable permalinks, and a way to manage a growing body of posts.
Do not assume Square’s newer editor is a complete replacement for a traditional blog. Square’s FAQ describes its Stories feature as lacking some conventional blog functions, including comments. If a blog is central to your business, test how your essential content structure will work before deciding between Weebly and Square Online. During any migration, check post URLs, featured images, categories, tags, RSS, comments, author data, and search indexing individually.
Domains, hosting, and SSL
A free platform subdomain is different from owning a custom domain. A paid plan may let you connect a domain purchased elsewhere; buying or transferring a domain through a platform is a separate registrar and DNS decision. Website hosting stores and serves the site, while domain registration gives you control of its address. Business email may also be a separate service and cost.

Before a move, make sure you control the domain account and understand renewal dates, DNS records, and email dependencies. Square says most domain transfers take approximately 7–10 days, require an authorization or EPP code, and can be blocked for 60 days after changes to registrant contact information under ICANN rules. See Transfer Your Website Domain to Square and coordinate contact changes with the transfer rather than making them at the last minute.

Account association does not mean the old site has automatically become a Square-built site. Existing Weebly websites and new Square websites can remain distinct within an account. That separation, plus different editor and app systems, can be confusing if you expect a one-click conversion. Plan any transition as a rebuild or migration and verify the content and functions that matter.
Weebly vs. Square Online
| Decision point | Weebly | Square Online / Square Websites |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting point | Existing sites and straightforward websites | New sites, particularly for businesses using Square |
| Editing approach | Legacy themes and page elements | Section-based editor with a different settings structure |
| Apps | Weebly App Center for the legacy editor | Square App Marketplace; Weebly App Center compatibility is not supported |
| Blogging | More conventional legacy-blog workflow | Stories feature, not a full traditional blogging replacement |
| Migration | Existing content and site remain in the Weebly environment | Expect to review or rebuild content; do not assume themes, apps, layouts, or blog functions transfer intact |
| Strategic direction | U.S. availability continues, but not Square’s recommended path for new sites | Square’s recommended current option for new websites |
Square’s own FAQ explains the editor and app differences, and its setup guide directs Weebly creators to transition guidance. Choose based on the site you need to build, not on the assumption that the two names describe interchangeable editors.
Who should use Weebly?
Existing Weebly site owners
If the site works, is supported in your country, and meets your needs, staying put can be more sensible than migrating without a clear benefit. Revisit the decision if your site needs more design freedom, deeper publishing tools, or store features the current plan does not provide.
People creating a simple new website
Weebly can be a reasonable choice for a basic informational site if ease matters more than customization. In the U.S., compare the project in Square Online before building, because Square recommends it for new sites and the editors are separate.
Square merchants
If your business already relies on Square payments or point of sale, Square Online deserves an early look. Weebly may still fit an existing or especially simple site, but do not assume every Square feature or app belongs to both editors.
Bloggers and publishers
For occasional announcements, Weebly may be enough. For an archive-led publication, content marketing program, or documentation hub, compare platforms with stronger content-management and blogging capabilities before committing.

Alternatives worth comparing
- Square Online: The most direct comparison for new sites and Square-connected businesses. It is Square’s recommended path, but it has a different editor and its Stories feature is not a full traditional blog.
- Squarespace: Consider it for a design-led portfolio, creative business, or polished professional site. Its comparison page with Weebly positions it around design, content presentation, analytics, and marketing; see Squarespace vs. Weebly. Check current checkout pricing and billing terms directly.
- Wix: Worth comparing if Weebly’s layout controls feel restrictive and you want more visual customization. More options can also mean more setup decisions; verify current features and pricing for your needs.
- Shopify: Consider it when ecommerce is the core business rather than an add-on to a brochure site. It may be excessive for a personal site or a small organization selling only a few items. Verify current plans and transaction terms before comparing total cost.
Final verdict
Weebly is still a defensible choice for a stable U.S. site, a basic brochure website, or a modest store whose requirements fit its plan features. Its ease and Square connection are practical strengths; its tighter design controls, more limited fit for serious publishing, and separate relationship to Square’s newer editor are meaningful constraints.
For a new U.S. project, compare Square Online before committing to Weebly, especially if the business already uses Square. For a complex store or a design- or content-led brand, compare specialist alternatives. For users in countries covered by the wind-down notice, the immediate priority is preserving content, domains, and important page URLs—not choosing Weebly for a new build.
