The right dimensions depend on where the image appears: a CMS card, a social link preview or Google Discover. Choose the display surface first, then create a large enough source image, compose for its crop and configure the relevant metadata or CMS setting.
| Use case | Working dimensions | Shape or rule |
|---|---|---|
| Google Discover large image | At least 1,200 px wide and more than 300,000 total pixels (1,280 × 720 px is a safe example) | 16:9; allow max-image-preview:large or AMP |
| LinkedIn shared-link preview | At least 1,200 × 627 px; maximum file size 5 MB | Recommended ratio 1.91:1 |
| Facebook shared-link image | 1,200 × 630 px is a commonly published guide value | Check Facebook’s current specifications before publishing |
| WordPress or other CMS card | Set by the theme or component | May be scaled, center-cropped or position-cropped |
Start with the placement, not a magic number
A thumbnail is a presentation role, not a universal file type. A news-card thumbnail might be rendered at 320 × 180 px, while the same article’s social image is downloaded at 1,200 px or more. Search and social systems may also select an image automatically rather than using the file you consider the thumbnail.
Keep a high-resolution master and generate derivatives for each important surface. Compare the target’s minimum width, aspect ratio, crop behavior, file size and metadata. A 16:9 Discover image and a 1.91:1 LinkedIn image are close, but a subject near the edge can be clipped when one image is used for both.
WordPress thumbnail size: what the settings actually control
Media settings
In WordPress, open Settings → Media. The Thumbnail size fields specify a width and height. The option to crop thumbnails to exact dimensions determines whether WordPress preserves the whole image by scaling it or fills the box by cropping it. Exact cropping is useful for uniform card grids, but it can remove faces, product labels or text at the edges.

WordPress’s Media “thumbnail” size is separate from a theme’s post-thumbnail (featured-image) size. A theme can register its own dimensions and use those in templates, so changing Media settings may not alter the image you see on an archive page.
Theme-registered sizes
A theme can register a post-thumbnail size with PHP:
set_post_thumbnail_size(640, 360, true);
The third argument enables a centered hard crop. With cropping disabled, the image is scaled to fit. An array can choose a crop position, for example:
set_post_thumbnail_size(640, 360, array('center', 'top'));
The exact function call belongs in the theme’s setup code, not in a page editor. Check the theme documentation or template files for the actual size used by your card component.
Changing a size does not fix old files
Registering a new size affects future derivative generation. Existing uploads do not automatically gain the new dimensions, so they may continue to use old crops until your site regenerates image derivatives with an appropriate WordPress tool. Always test a newly uploaded image after changing the setting, then regenerate older media if the layout requires consistency.

Google Discover image dimensions and eligibility
For Google’s large-image treatment in Discover, use an image at least 1,200 px wide, with more than 300,000 total pixels, and a 16:9 ratio. A 1,280 × 720 image contains 921,600 pixels and clears the pixel threshold. These are Discover image recommendations, not a requirement for every website thumbnail.
Enable the large preview with the max-image-preview:large directive (or use AMP where applicable). A compliant image still does not guarantee that Google will show the page in Discover, display a large preview or select that particular image. Google chooses image previews automatically from multiple sources. Give it a relevant, representative, high-resolution image rather than a generic logo, and avoid an extreme aspect ratio.
Set a preferred image without assuming control
Use an og:image value and schema.org image properties to identify a preferred representative image. These signals help crawlers understand your choice, but Google’s selection remains automated. Ensure the image is crawlable, stable and closely related to the page’s subject. Keep important text and faces away from the outer edges because another surface may crop the file.
Social link-preview sizes are platform-specific
LinkedIn’s sharing module lists a minimum of 1,200 × 627 px, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio and specifies a maximum file size of 5 MB. That image is for a link preview, not for your site’s small card component. Add the image URL to the page’s Open Graph metadata and inspect the resulting preview after publishing.
A Canva size guide lists 1,200 × 630 px for Facebook shared-link images. This is a secondary guide rather than a universal contract, so verify Facebook’s current documentation if the preview is business-critical. The ratio is close to LinkedIn’s; a carefully composed 1,200 × 630 master can often be adapted, but do not assume identical cropping.

Open Graph implementation
A minimal page head can identify the intended preview:
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:title" content="Your article title">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-1200x630.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
Use an absolute, publicly reachable URL. If you replace the file while keeping the URL, a platform may continue showing a cached version; changing the filename or using the platform’s preview debugger can force a refresh.

- List every destination. Record the card component, featured-image slot, Discover target and social networks that matter to your audience.
- Find the real rendered box. Inspect the CSS or theme template at desktop and mobile widths. A component advertised as “thumbnail” may use a different crop at each breakpoint.
- Create a master with headroom. Start with at least the largest required width; 1,280 × 720 works for a 16:9 Discover composition, while a separate 1,200 × 630 crop suits many social previews.
- Protect the focal area. Keep faces, logos and text inside the central safe area. Do not put essential information in corners that a hard crop can remove.
- Export appropriately. Use JPEG for photographic images, PNG for sharp transparency or line art, and WebP when your delivery stack supports it. Balance quality against transfer size; a larger pixel dimension is not useful if compression makes text unreadable.
- Configure the signal. Set the WordPress/theme size for on-site cards, add Open Graph metadata for sharing and permit
max-image-preview:largewhen Discover large previews are desired. - Inspect the result. Check the actual card, a mobile layout and each social preview. Look for unexpected letterboxing, clipped subjects, stale caches and a platform choosing a different image.
Design and crop rules that prevent bad thumbnails
- Use a clear subject with strong contrast; details that look good at 1,200 px may disappear at 160 px.
- Leave breathing room around text and faces. Center crops usually remove equal amounts from opposite edges, but a theme may crop from a selected position.
- Do not bake small, essential copy into an image unless it remains legible at the smallest display size. Put the explanation in the page title and metadata too.
- Keep the same subject and visual identity across derivatives, but allow a separate crop when a ratio change would otherwise remove the subject.
- Use descriptive filenames and meaningful alternative text for accessibility. Alt text does not force a search or social preview, but it helps users when the image cannot load.
Performance, caching and reliability
Serve derivatives close to their display dimensions instead of sending a multi-megapixel original to every card. Responsive HTML with srcset and sizes lets browsers choose an appropriate width. Lazy-load below-the-fold cards, but keep the main article image discoverable and avoid delaying it unnecessarily.
Cache generated files with a long-lived immutable URL. When an image changes, publish a new filename or version so browsers and social crawlers do not keep the old bytes. Verify that your CDN sends the correct content type and that robots rules, authentication or hotlink protection do not block crawlers.

If you need rendered screenshots rather than manually prepared thumbnail files, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Troubleshooting thumbnail problems
The image is the wrong shape
Inspect the component’s CSS and the theme’s registered size. If exact crop is enabled, create a deliberate derivative at that ratio or change the crop position; merely uploading a wider original will not prevent clipping.
WordPress still shows the old dimensions
Changing a registered size does not resize existing uploads. Regenerate derivatives, clear the page/CDN cache and verify that the template is using the intended image-size name rather than the Media thumbnail.

Final checklist
- Identify the exact display surface before choosing pixels.
- Keep a high-resolution master and make intentional crops for materially different ratios.
- For Discover large imagery, use at least 1,200 px width, more than 300,000 pixels and 16:9, then allow
max-image-preview:large. - For LinkedIn, use at least 1,200 × 627 px, a 1.91:1 ratio and no more than 5 MB.
- Treat 1,200 × 630 px for Facebook as a guide value and recheck the platform’s current rules.
- Check whether WordPress’s theme overrides the Media thumbnail setting and regenerate old derivatives after changes.
- Preview the rendered card and metadata on real mobile and desktop layouts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 300 × 200 px a universal website thumbnail size?
No. That size may fit one card design, but CMS themes and components define their own boxes. Use the component’s rendered dimensions and crop rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Can one image serve WordPress, Discover and social previews?
Sometimes, but the ratios differ. A single image can work when its focal subject stays central; separate crops are safer when text or faces sit near an edge.
Does meeting Google’s image dimensions guarantee Discover traffic?
No. The dimensions and preview directive support large-image eligibility. Google still decides whether to show the page and which image to use.
