You can make a YouTube thumbnail in a browser: start with a 1280 × 720-pixel, 16:9 canvas, add one clear subject and a few readable words, export a PNG or JPEG, then upload it in YouTube Studio. Adobe Express and Canva both offer online templates and editing tools; choose between them based on whether you need Adobe’s documented AI, background-removal and brand-kit tools, or Canva’s dedicated YouTube Thumbnail design type and straightforward template-to-export workflow.

What a website thumbnail maker does

A website thumbnail maker is an online editor for creating the small preview image that represents a video or other published content. For the basic workflow, you do not need to install desktop design software: open a browser-based editor, select a preset or blank canvas, add an image and text, adjust the design, export an image file, and upload it to the destination platform.

For a YouTube video, the thumbnail is a still image, not a screenshot of the video page. A page screenshot can be a visual starting point, but it does not by itself create a designed thumbnail with a chosen subject, concise headline, branding and carefully placed elements. Make those design decisions in an editor, then use YouTube’s custom-thumbnail upload control.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

Use a 1280 × 720-pixel canvas in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Adobe Express gives 1280 × 720 pixels as its YouTube thumbnail guidance. Canva likewise specifies 16:9 and 1280 × 720 pixels, and states a minimum width of 640 pixels. Starting at 1280 × 720 gives you a clear working canvas at the size both tools identify.

Design for the thumbnail’s small appearance, not just for the enlarged editor view. Adobe says thumbnails may appear as small as 168 × 94 pixels on mobile. At that scale, a busy layout or fine print can become hard to read. Use a strong focal point, clear contrast between text and background, and a short headline. Adobe recommends limiting bold thumbnail text to 3–5 words. Keep essential text and details out of YouTube’s bottom-left corner, where the video-duration badge appears.

Choose Adobe Express when its documented AI generation, background removal, stock imagery or brand kits match the work you need to do. Choose Canva when you want to begin from its dedicated YouTube Thumbnail design type, browse templates and export as PNG or JPEG. Both support the central task of making an image in an online editor; neither choice removes the need to check how the design reads at small size.

How to make a thumbnail online

  1. Confirm the destination. Check which platform will display the image and how it accepts custom thumbnails. The dimensions and upload path below are for YouTube.
  2. Open an editor and start a canvas. In Canva, search for “YouTube Thumbnail” and choose a template. Adobe Express offers templates or a blank canvas; its documented sequence is to get started, explore templates, add imagery, apply brand elements, then share or download.
  3. Set the working size. Use 1280 × 720 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio for YouTube. If using a template, verify that it matches the destination rather than assuming every template is the correct size.
  4. Choose one clear subject image. Upload an image or use stock imagery where available. Keep the main subject visually distinct from the background. In Adobe Express, background removal is an available option when separating a subject would help the composition.
  5. Add a short headline and any necessary branding. Keep the words brief enough to understand at a glance. If you use a face, product or other subject alongside text, make sure neither disappears into a similarly colored background. Adobe recommends high contrast and bold text limited to 3–5 words.
  6. Check the overlay area and scale down the preview. Keep important text away from the bottom-left duration-badge area. Zoom out or view a reduced preview comparable to a small mobile display; revise anything that becomes too tiny, crowded or unclear.
  7. Export the image. Canva offers JPEG, which it describes as a smaller-file option, and PNG for higher image quality. Use PNG or JPEG when the editor offers them. Adobe Express supports download, but the cited guidance does not specify its download formats, so check the available export choices in the editor.
  8. Upload in YouTube’s video workflow. In the video workflow, find the Thumbnail section and upload the image from your device. YouTube’s interface also includes “Get suggestions” for generated thumbnail ideas. Verify the selected thumbnail before completing the publishing workflow.

Design checks before you export

  • One focal point: A viewer should be able to identify the main person, object or scene quickly.
  • Readable contrast: Text should remain distinct from the image behind it. If it blends into the background, adjust the contrast or simplify the image area behind the words.
  • Few words: Use a short phrase rather than trying to summarize the whole video. Adobe’s guidance is 3–5 bold words.
  • Safe placement: Leave YouTube’s bottom-left duration-badge area free of critical text or details.
  • Small-preview test: Check that the topic is still apparent at a compact size, not only on the full canvas.
  • Correct handoff: Export an image file you can locate on your device, then upload that file through the platform’s custom-thumbnail control.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you need first is a clean image of a webpage—for example, as a visual reference or starting asset—you can request a website screenshot from ScreenshotNeo. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a thumbnail-design editor: it captures a page, but does not add a designed headline, branding or thumbnail layout. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

This one GET request saves a webpage capture as a WebP file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is on every plan.

Common problems and fixes

The text is hard to read

Reduce the number of words, increase the text/background contrast, or simplify the area behind the words. Then check the thumbnail at a small preview size; text that looks comfortable on the full canvas may be too small when displayed on mobile.

The thumbnail feels crowded

Remove secondary details that compete with the subject or headline. Keep one clear focal point and preserve enough empty space for the important elements to stand out.

The duration badge covers important content

Move essential text or visual details away from the bottom-left corner before exporting. That is where YouTube places the video-duration overlay.

The uploaded image is not the one you intended

Reopen the editor’s export step, save the final version somewhere easy to identify, and upload that file from the video workflow’s Thumbnail section. Check the selected thumbnail in the publishing workflow rather than assuming an earlier draft was replaced.

The design looks different from the editor preview

Return to the 16:9, 1280 × 720 working canvas and inspect the exported image itself. A small preview can expose legibility or composition issues that are easy to miss while zoomed in; adjust the source design and export again if needed.

Export, upload and time considerations

For a simple thumbnail, the time-consuming part is usually making the design clear, not exporting it: choosing a template, arranging the subject, writing a short headline and checking the small preview. Reusable brand elements can make recurring designs more consistent; Adobe Express documents brand kits for that purpose. Canva’s PNG and JPEG choices make the trade-off explicit: it describes JPEG as smaller and PNG as higher image quality. The cited platform and editor guidance does not establish a universal maximum file size, file-size target or export time, so check the current upload requirements shown by the destination platform and the export controls in your chosen editor.

Keep an editable copy of the design if you expect to revise the headline or image later. The exported PNG or JPEG is the upload file; the editable project is what makes future changes easier. Before publishing, confirm that the final export is the version you selected in the platform’s thumbnail control.
