There is no single universal size that every platform displays identically. Treat 1200 × 630 as a broad default, then validate the preview on each service where your links will be posted.
Why 1200 × 630 works
The dimensions produce the wide 1.91:1 shape used by major link-card layouts. A 1200 × 627 image follows LinkedIn’s published ratio almost exactly, but a 1200 × 630 source is easier to maintain across systems and is the default recommended by the technical guides reviewed for this article.

The extra three pixels of height compared with LinkedIn’s minimum do not make a meaningful visual difference. What matters more is providing enough resolution for large displays, using the correct metadata, and designing for possible cropping.

Prepare the image itself
Set the canvas before designing
- Create a new image at exactly 1200 × 630 pixels.
- Keep the main title and logo inside a generous central area rather than touching an edge.
- Preview the design at both full size and a small card size. Fine lettering that looks clear on a 1200-pixel canvas may become unreadable when a network displays a compact card.
- Export an image that remains below LinkedIn’s 5 MB ceiling. If your file is larger, reduce unnecessary detail or compression settings while checking that text and edges remain clean.
Design for cropping
Card renderers can crop the source image to fit a particular placement. No single, universally published safe-area measurement applies to every network, so use a visual margin instead of placing critical content at the extreme top, bottom, left, or right. A centered headline and logo are more resilient than edge-aligned artwork.
Do not assume that a preview shown in your content-management system is the same crop a visitor will see. Check a real share preview after publishing, and check both desktop and mobile placements when the platform provides them.
Add Open Graph metadata in the initial HTML
LinkedIn’s sharing guidance requires the page source to identify the title, image, description, and URL. Put these values in the initial HTML response so a crawler can read them without depending on client-side JavaScript.

Image URL and crawler requirements
An image can be the correct size and still fail to appear if the crawler cannot fetch it. Check that the image URL is publicly reachable and is not behind a login, firewall rule, hotlink protection policy, or a robots configuration that blocks the relevant crawler. Secondary guidance also recommends an absolute HTTPS URL; use that as an implementation check rather than assuming it is a universal requirement for every service.

- Request the image URL in a private browser window to confirm it does not require authentication.
- Confirm the server returns the image itself rather than a redirect to a sign-in page.
- Check that your CDN, WAF, or access-control rules do not block social crawlers.
- Verify that the image URL in the live HTML is the intended file, not an old CMS value.
Why a preview is cropped, missing, or outdated
The preview is cropped
The network is probably applying a card shape different from your source canvas. Rework the artwork so the essential text and logo sit nearer the center, then test the actual card. Do not solve a crop by shrinking all text to the point that it becomes unreadable.
The image does not appear at all
Inspect the page source for og:image, check that the URL is absolute and reachable, and look for crawler blocks. LinkedIn specifically notes that blocked or protected image locations can prevent retrieval.
An old image persists after you replaced it
Social previews are commonly cached. Changing the file while keeping the same URL may not immediately invalidate the stored preview. Use the platform’s current inspection or refresh mechanism after confirming that the new image is live. Secondary guidance identifies LinkedIn’s Post Inspector and Facebook’s Sharing Debugger as examples of tools that can request a fresh scrape; their interfaces and behavior can change.
The page uses a JavaScript framework
If your framework inserts Open Graph tags only after hydration, a crawler that reads the initial response may miss them. Render the four core tags in the server response or static HTML, then inspect “view source” rather than relying only on the browser’s live DOM.

- Export a 1200 × 630 image, or at least 1200 × 627 when targeting LinkedIn specifically.
- Keep the file at or below LinkedIn’s 5 MB limit.
- Place essential content in a central safe area.

Why does changing the image file not immediately change the card?
The platform may still be serving a cached scrape. Confirm the new URL works, then use that platform’s current inspection or refresh tool to request a new fetch.
