Use Selenium’s Python WebDriver to open a page, call driver.save_screenshot("page.png"), check the returned boolean, and close the browser in a finally block. That captures the current browser window as a PNG. Selenium also supports screenshots as bytes or Base64 text, individual elements, and browser-specific full-page methods.
Install Selenium and prepare a browser
Create a virtual environment for a repeatable setup, then install the current Selenium package:

python -m pip install -U seleniumRecent Selenium Python releases invoke Selenium Manager when you do not provide a driver yourself. It detects the installed browser, resolves a compatible driver, downloads it when needed, and caches it. This works for most supported platforms, but proxies, restricted networks, unsupported operating systems, or missing browser libraries can still require manual driver and service configuration.

Use a supported browser installation (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or another browser supported by your Selenium binding). For unattended jobs, run the browser headlessly and set a known window size so visual output is consistent.

Basic website screenshot in Python
This complete script navigates, saves a PNG, reports an I/O failure, and always closes the WebDriver session:

driver.quit()save_screenshot(path) is Selenium’s concise alias for the file-saving screenshot method. It returns True after a successful write and False when the file operation encounters an I/O error. The destination directory must already exist and be writable; Selenium will not create a missing screenshots folder for you.
Create the output directory first

A screenshot is taken at the instant Selenium calls the method. Navigation completing does not guarantee that JavaScript-rendered content, fonts, images, or a consent dialog has finished. Prefer an explicit wait for a meaningful condition instead of an arbitrary long sleep:

driver.quit()For deterministic visual comparisons, keep the browser version, viewport, device scale, URL, login state, timezone, network conditions, and wait condition consistent between runs. If the site animates, wait for the animation to finish or hide it with injected CSS before capture.

The ordinary WebDriver methods capture the current window, not automatically the complete scrollable document. Do not treat a viewport image as a full-page screenshot. Firefox’s Python API separately documents full-page methods such as get_full_page_screenshot_as_file; this is not a universal Chrome or cross-browser method.
Capture an element instead of the window
Locate the element after the page is ready, then save its image:

Full-page, viewport, and sizing decisions
Consistent viewport captures
Set the window dimensions before navigation or capture:

driver.save_screenshot("viewport.png")The resulting image represents the current window at that size. Responsive breakpoints can change menus, columns, and typography, so a small dimension change may produce a substantially different image.
Full-document captures
If you require the entire scrollable page, verify that your chosen browser and Selenium version expose a supported full-page method. Firefox’s Python API has dedicated full-page screenshot methods. For Chrome or cross-browser jobs, do not assume that save_screenshot stitches the document; use a browser-specific implementation or another capture service and test pages with lazy-loaded content, sticky headers, and very tall layouts.
Common failures and fixes
“Unable to obtain driver” or browser startup errors
- Confirm that the browser is installed and can launch manually.
- Allow Selenium Manager to reach its driver endpoints, or configure a compatible driver and Selenium
Serviceexplicitly in locked-down environments. - In containers, install the browser’s shared libraries and use the container’s recommended headless flags.
The file is missing or save_screenshot returns False
- Use an absolute path temporarily to see where the process is writing.
- Create the parent directory with
Path.mkdir. - Check permissions, disk space, and whether another process has locked the destination.
- Keep the Boolean check; a script that ignores it can report success without an image.
The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or shows a loading shell
- Wait for a visible application landmark, not merely for
driver.getto return. - Increase the explicit wait timeout for slow environments.
- Scroll through lazy-loaded sections before a full-document capture, then wait for images to appear.
- Check authentication, redirects, network errors, and content-security restrictions in the browser logs.
The wrong responsive layout appears
Set the window size explicitly and keep device scale and browser settings constant. A headless browser’s default viewport can differ from a headed run.

An element screenshot fails
Verify the CSS selector, wait for visibility, and ensure overlays are not covering the element. If the element is inside an iframe, switch into that frame before locating it.
Scaling captures responsibly
Always call quit() in finally, especially in loops; leaked browser processes consume memory and file descriptors. Reuse a driver for a batch when pages share the same session, but reset cookies or create isolated sessions when authentication and state must not leak between URLs. Name files with a URL-safe slug and timestamp, and record the URL, viewport, browser version, and wait condition beside each artifact so a visual difference can be reproduced.
Selenium itself does not provide a topic-specific speed or success guarantee. Capture time depends on browser startup, page resources, JavaScript, network latency, and your waits. Headless mode reduces display overhead but does not make a slow page fast. For larger workloads, Selenium’s official Getting Started material points to Grid for distributing execution across browsers and environments.
