To simulate a website’s screen size, resize its viewport in browser developer tools. In Chrome, open DevTools, turn on Device Mode, then enter a width and height or drag the viewport edges. This lets you see how the page responds to different CSS viewport sizes without installing a separate simulator. A preview is useful for finding layout problems, but it does not replace testing on a real phone when actual hardware, browser rendering, performance, or touch behavior matters.
What a website screen size simulator actually changes
For responsive layout testing, the key measurement is usually the page’s viewport size: the width and height of the area in which the browser lays out the page. CSS media queries often use viewport width to apply different styles, so resizing the viewport can reveal when navigation collapses, columns reflow, text wraps differently, or controls become crowded.
A simulator’s device preset is only a convenient starting point. Responsive design should work across a range of sizes, including widths you did not select as named devices. Flexible layouts and content-driven breakpoints are more robust than creating a separate exact layout for every device model. See MDN’s guidance on media query fundamentals and responsive web design.
CSS pixels are not physical screen pixels
A phone’s advertised panel resolution describes physical pixels, not necessarily the CSS viewport width used for layout. Device pixel ratio (DPR) is the ratio of physical pixels to logical CSS pixels; on a high-density display, multiple physical pixels can draw one CSS pixel. Chrome DevTools exposes device-related controls, including DPR, but do not enter a panel’s physical resolution and assume that is the page’s CSS width.

Use Chrome DevTools as a screen size simulator
- Open the page and DevTools. Navigate to your page in Chrome, then open DevTools using the browser menu or the platform’s DevTools shortcut.
- Enable Device Mode. Select the device toolbar toggle in DevTools. The page appears in a resizable viewport.
- Set the dimensions. Choose a preset or type a custom width and height in the viewport controls. You can also drag the viewport handles to resize it continuously.
- Inspect the layout while changing width. Watch navigation, columns, images, text, forms, and interactive controls. Note the exact width where an element begins to overflow, overlap, become hard to use, or needs to reflow.
- Inspect breakpoints if needed. In Chrome, enable the media-query bars to view and jump to visible
min-widthandmax-widthbreakpoints. Inspect the relevant source declaration to locate its@mediarule and compare the code with the layout change. - Check orientation. Use the rotate control to preview landscape as well as portrait when the page’s use case makes orientation relevant.
- Verify critical behavior on hardware. Test on a representative real device if your result depends on its browser, performance, touch interaction, or other hardware behavior.
Chrome’s Device Mode documentation currently lists these preset widths: Mobile S 320px, Mobile M 375px, Mobile L 425px, Tablet 768px, Laptop 1024px, Laptop L 1440px, and 4K 2560px. They are Chrome presets, not universal standards or a claim that all users’ devices have those viewport widths. The controls and preset list may change; consult Chrome DevTools: Device Mode for the current documentation.
Choose useful sizes and find where the design breaks
Start with a known problem or a representative page, then move across the range rather than checking only a few named devices. If the layout looks fine at 375px and 768px but fails at 600px, the gap between those samples is where the useful diagnosis is. Record both the width and the symptom; “navigation overlaps at 612px” is more actionable than “tablet looks wrong.”
- At narrow widths: check that navigation remains usable, text and buttons fit, images scale without distortion, and no content forces horizontal scrolling unintentionally.
- At intermediate widths: look for awkward wrapping, columns that have become too narrow, and controls that collide before a breakpoint takes effect.
- At wide widths: check for excessively long text lines, stretched content, and layouts that leave important elements poorly positioned.
- At relevant heights: inspect whether fixed headers, dialogs, or sticky controls obscure content in a short viewport.
Use the observed content problem to choose a breakpoint: for example, change a multi-column layout when its columns no longer have enough room. A breakpoint is a point at which layout or styling changes; it is not inherently tied to a particular phone or tablet name. Media queries can respond to viewport width and other environment features, including orientation. MDN’s media query reference explains common width-based techniques.

Check viewport metadata when mobile layouts fail
If a narrow mobile layout does not activate on a phone, inspect the document’s viewport meta tag. A mobile browser using a wider virtual viewport can cause narrow-screen media queries to behave differently than expected. MDN recommends setting the viewport width to the device width:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
Place this element in the document’s <head>. The width=device-width setting aligns the layout viewport with the device width; initial-scale=1 sets the initial zoom scale. For details and caveats, see MDN’s reference for the viewport metadata element.
Chrome, Firefox, presets, and real-device checks
| Method | What it helps you check | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools Device Mode | Custom dimensions, width presets, breakpoint bars, orientation, DPR and device-type controls, and screenshots, as documented by Chrome. | It simulates a viewport; it does not run your code on a mobile device. |
| Firefox Responsive Design Mode | Simulated device widths and responsive page inspection, as described by MDN. | A desktop browser simulation is not the same as checking the page on the target hardware. |
| Real phone or tablet | Actual browser rendering and interaction on the device you test, including touch and device performance. | One physical device does not represent every screen size, browser, or device configuration. |
Use browser tools for fast iteration and breakpoint diagnosis; use hardware checks for behaviors the simulation cannot establish. Google’s Chrome DevTools documentation explicitly cautions: “With Device Mode you don’t actually run your code on a mobile device.” It advises testing on a real device when in doubt. MDN documents the responsive-sizing features available in Firefox in its Responsive Design Mode reference.

If your goal is to capture the page at a chosen viewport rather than inspect it interactively, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot through one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server by Yorker Media. This example requests a WebP screenshot of the Stripe homepage; replace the target URL with the page you need and use your own API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for details, then sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshooting common responsive-preview problems
The mobile layout does not appear at a narrow width
Check for a viewport meta tag using width=device-width, then confirm that the relevant media query matches the width you entered. A wide virtual mobile viewport can keep narrow-screen queries from activating as expected. Also check that a later or more specific CSS rule is not overriding the intended style.
The preset width does not match the phone’s resolution
Compare CSS viewport width with CSS viewport width, not with the device’s physical panel resolution. DPR describes the relationship between physical and logical pixels. Use the simulator’s viewport controls and device settings rather than treating a marketing resolution as the layout width.

The page looks correct in the simulator but fails on a phone
That is possible because Device Mode is not actual mobile execution. Reproduce the issue on a representative real device, especially if it involves touch, browser rendering, performance, or device-specific behavior.
The layout works at the presets but breaks between them
Resize continuously or enter intermediate custom widths, then note the first width at which the problem appears. Presets are samples, not coverage of every viewport. Adjust the layout or breakpoint based on the content that fails rather than adding a device-specific rule by default.

A screenshot cannot tell me whether the page is usable
A static image can expose visual clipping, overlap, or spacing problems, but it cannot establish how a real user’s touch interaction or device performance behaves. Use interactive browser inspection for layout diagnosis and real-device checks when behavior matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a website screen size simulator free to use?
Chrome DevTools and Firefox Responsive Design Mode are browser developer tools that provide responsive viewport previews; the cited documentation does not require buying a separate simulator for this task.
Can I test a custom screen resolution in a browser?
Yes. Enter custom viewport width and height in Chrome Device Mode or resize the responsive viewport. For responsive web layout, use CSS viewport dimensions rather than a device’s physical panel resolution.
Does a simulator prove that a website works on every phone?
No. A viewport preview helps inspect layout but does not establish behavior on every device. Test on representative hardware when real browser, touch, or performance behavior matters.
