A Malwarebytes alert saying “website blocked due to riskware” means Malwarebytes stopped a browser, application, or background process from connecting to a domain, URL, advertisement, script, or other network resource it considered risky. It does not, by itself, prove that your computer is infected.
The right response is to preserve the alert details, leave the site, update Malwarebytes, run a normal scan, and investigate further only if the warning repeats or you find other symptoms.
What “riskware” means
Riskware is not synonymous with malware. It is a broad, vendor-specific label for software, websites, services, scripts, or behaviors that may create security, privacy, abuse, tracking, or unwanted-advertising risks.

There is no single universal “riskware” malware family. Detection names and website reputations can change as vendors review new evidence or a site is cleaned.
What the alert tells you—and what it does not

| Confirmed compromise | There is additional evidence of malicious execution, persistence, account theft, or system changes. |
Malwarebytes Browser Guard can block activity associated with a page or browser connection, while Malwarebytes for Windows can also detect local files and unwanted software. The exact wording and information shown depend on the product, edition, component, and current release.
Is the website definitely malicious?
No. The warning may relate to the domain itself, a particular page, a compromised subdomain, a redirect destination, a third-party advertisement, or an embedded script. It may also be a stale reputation entry or a false positive.

Do not revisit the page simply to test it, and do not click Allow, Proceed, or add an exclusion just to stop the notification. A site owner may later clean a compromised page while reputation services still need time to update; conversely, a site that appears legitimate can continue serving a malicious advertising or redirect resource.

What to do after a single alert
- Leave the page. Close the browser tab or application that triggered the warning.
- Save the evidence. Record the blocked domain or full URL, time, browser or application, process name, detection label, and Malwarebytes component or database version. Take a screenshot if possible.
- Update Malwarebytes. Product menus change between releases, so use the current update option shown in your Malwarebytes installation.
- Run a normal Threat Scan. If local detections appear, review their names and locations, quarantine clearly identified threats, save the scan report, and restart if requested.
- Review the browser. Check extensions, notification permissions, homepage, search engine, downloads, pop-up settings, redirects, and recently installed browser policies. Remove unfamiliar extensions and revoke notification access from suspicious sites.
- Restart Windows. Check whether the alert returns after the restart.
- Do not overreact. A single blocked connection usually does not justify formatting Windows, deleting registry entries, disabling all security software, or installing several antivirus products.
If the alert keeps returning
Repeated alerts deserve a source investigation, especially when they appear while the browser is closed. Background browser processes, push notifications, startup programs, scheduled tasks, services, browser extensions, and ad-supported utilities can make network connections without an open tab.
Note whether the same domain appears repeatedly and whether the alert occurs at regular intervals. Use Task Manager to identify active applications and review Windows startup applications. Do not terminate or delete an unfamiliar process blindly.
When symptoms justify deeper checking, review:
- Recently installed applications, especially bundled, cracked, pirated, or modified software.
- Browser extensions and notification permissions.
- Startup applications and scheduled tasks.
- Unfamiliar services.
- Proxy, DNS, and hosts-file settings.
- Unexpected CPU, memory, or network usage.
- Browser redirects, changed search results, or unexplained pop-ups.
Signs such as disabled security software, failed updates, system redirects, pop-ups across unrelated sites, or suspicious banking and email activity justify prompt escalation.
When a second-opinion scanner makes sense
An independent on-demand scanner can help distinguish a Malwarebytes-specific detection from a broader malware finding, leftover components, or a clean computer experiencing only a reputation block. ESET Online Scanner is one option; Dr.Web CureIt! is another on-demand option listed by its vendor.

Use one diagnostic tool at a time, follow its current instructions, and preserve the resulting report. Running several aggressive cleaners simultaneously can produce conflicting quarantines and make diagnosis harder. A second-opinion scanner is not a replacement for regular updates or always-on protection.
Advanced malware-removal workflows may use tools such as FRST, Farbar Service Scanner, or SecurityCheck. FRST repair scripts are case-specific. Never apply a forum helper’s fixlist to a different computer: repair operations can permanently delete files, alter settings, and restart Windows. The Malwarebytes forum’s indexed remediation discussions illustrate why logs and system-specific instructions matter, but a volunteer’s forum advice is not a universal repair procedure.
Malwarebytes, Microsoft Defender, and exclusions
Do not disable Malwarebytes or Microsoft Defender merely because a website was blocked. Product-overlap troubleshooting is more appropriate when security products interfere with each other, scans fail, services are disabled, or updates repeatedly break.
Some Malwarebytes forum workflows discuss the setting “Always register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center” and refer users to Malwarebytes’ official antivirus-exclusions guidance. Treat that as configuration troubleshooting, not a routine response to a riskware warning.

Exclusions reduce protection. If official support confirms that one is necessary, make it narrow and temporary where possible. Do not exclude an entire drive, user profile, browser, or security-product directory. An exclusion also will not repair a compromised website or remove a malicious extension.
Temporarily disabling SmartScreen or antivirus protection may occasionally be suggested when a legitimate diagnostic download is blocked. That is an exceptional, time-limited measure: download only from the official source, restore protection immediately, and do not use it to bypass a website warning.

A false positive becomes more plausible when only one product flags a known legitimate site, the alert occurs only on one advertising path or page, no local scan finds anything, or the warning stops after the site removes a compromised script.
That still does not justify creating a permanent exclusion. Preserve the URL, screenshot, detection name, timestamp, product and component version, and relevant scan logs. Report the website or file through Malwarebytes’ official support or review process so the classification can be investigated.

A clean scan means that Malwarebytes did not identify a threat under its current definitions and settings; it is not an absolute guarantee that every browser, account, or network component is safe.
If you entered a password or payment details
A blocked connection alone is not evidence that credentials were stolen. If you entered a password, payment details, or other sensitive information on a suspicious page, use a clean device to change the affected password, enable multifactor authentication, review active sessions, and contact the relevant bank or payment provider if financial information may be exposed. Avoid reusing the same password elsewhere; a password manager such as Bitwarden or 1Password can help with unique credentials.
Should you buy security software?
One blocked website does not automatically justify buying an upgrade. Compare either with the real-time security already installed; overlapping products can cause compatibility problems.
