Webflow is a hosted visual platform with separate Site and Workspace plans; WordPress is open-source software that you run with a compatible hosting setup. Choose based on the features your site needs, who will maintain its hosting and updates, the full cost of that setup, and what you need to take with you if you move. Neither platform is a universal winner.

Webflow vs WordPress at a glance

Decision Webflow WordPress
Operating model Hosted visual platform; Site plans cover individual sites, while Workspace plans cover workspace-related features. GPLv2-or-later software installed on a compatible web host.
Hosting and server setup Webflow hosts sites on its platform; a custom-domain site hosted by Webflow needs its own Site plan. You choose a host and need a compatible web server, PHP, database and HTTPS.
How features are added Check the features and limits of the relevant Site and Workspace plans. Plugins can add functions such as SEO, ecommerce, security, caching and import/export; compatibility and upkeep require attention.
Moving away Exported code omits some hosted and dynamic features, including CMS data and forms functionality. Hosting is separate from the software, but migration steps depend on the site and tools used.

How do Webflow and WordPress differ in practice?

Webflow: hosted service with separate plans

Webflow handles hosting for sites published on its platform. Its plans and pricing page separates Site plans, which govern publishing and site features, from Workspace plans, which cover workspace-related capabilities. A Site plan applies to an individual site, and each site hosted by Webflow on a custom domain needs its own Site plan, according to its Site plan documentation.

This arrangement can reduce the need to select and operate a separate web host, but the features available depend on the plan. Before committing, identify the plan required for every site and feature rather than assuming one subscription covers everything.

WordPress: software you run on a host

WordPress is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. Its license allows users to run, study, change and redistribute the software. That describes the software license, not the cost of operating a website: hosting, paid plugins or themes, maintenance and labor depend on the setup.

WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Apache and Nginx are recommended web servers, though other servers that support PHP and MySQL can work. Check the live WordPress requirements before choosing a host, since the recommended versions can change. WordPress.org notes that older PHP 7.4+ and MySQL 5.5.5+ versions have reached end of life and may expose sites to security vulnerabilities.

WordPress hosting guidance describes general-purpose and WordPress-specific hosting. Some WordPress-focused providers may offer services such as installation, backups and updates, but what is included varies by provider.

What will each option cost?

Compare the cost of the setup that delivers your required features—not WordPress’s software license against a single Webflow subscription price.

Webflow’s pricing page displays multiple plans, with Site and Workspace plans covering different needs. At the time represented by that page, it shows a free Starter plan, Basic at $15 per month billed yearly and Premium at $25 per month billed yearly. These are displayed US-dollar prices, can change, and do not establish the full cost of a particular project. Check the current plan details, billing cadence and any applicable taxes or add-ons on Webflow’s pricing page.

WordPress software is GPL-licensed, but running a site may involve hosting and optional paid themes or plugins, as well as the time or support needed for maintenance. The official WordPress sources do not provide a comparable total-cost figure. Build a project-specific estimate for both platforms that accounts for the features, services and labor you expect to use.

How do features and maintenance compare?

Webflow’s available features depend on the relevant hosted plan. With WordPress, plugins extend core software. The official plugin documentation lists examples such as SEO, ecommerce, security, caching, spam control and data import/export. A plugin is not automatically suitable just because it offers a needed function: quality varies, and compatibility may be unknown or poor when a plugin is not updated alongside WordPress core.

Neither label alone tells you how easy a site will be to operate. The work depends on the chosen Webflow plans or WordPress host and plugins, the site’s needs, and the support and skills available to its owner. Decide who will handle updates, backups, troubleshooting and any third-party services before choosing.

What happens if you move your site?

Webflow’s code export is useful for taking static files out of the platform, but it is not a complete export of the hosted site. Its code export documentation says exported code does not include CMS content, User Accounts, Ecommerce content and databases, code components and their functionality, or localized pages, elements and content. Webflow’s pricing FAQ also says forms stop working when hosting elsewhere and dynamic content must be exported collection by collection.

Before relying on an export, list the content and behaviors your site depends on, then check whether each will transfer and how it will work on the new host. A static-code export should not be mistaken for a functioning copy of every hosted feature.

WordPress software runs on a host you choose, but that fact alone does not guarantee a simple migration. The process depends on the site’s content, configuration, hosting and tools. Identify what must move—such as content, media, data and functionality—and confirm how your chosen setup handles it.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose Webflow if

  • You want a hosted visual platform and are comfortable selecting the appropriate Site and Workspace plans.
  • You have verified that the plan covers the publishing and hosted features your site needs.
  • You have checked portability requirements and can accept the limits of code export for any dynamic features you use.

Choose WordPress if

  • You want to run GPL-licensed software on a host you select.
  • You can arrange a host that meets WordPress’s current technical requirements, either directly or through provider support.
  • You are prepared to select and maintain any plugins needed for functions beyond core software.

Compare the actual project, not broad claims

There is no evidence here that establishes a universal winner on price, ease of use, speed, security, search visibility, customization or scalability. Those outcomes depend on the site’s implementation, plans or hosting, plugins, skills, traffic and support. Compare the specific features and operating responsibilities your project requires rather than assuming either platform will perform better in every case.
