A Tesla Semi drove around Michigan International Speedway with its lights on in footage shared publicly on June 17, 2022. A Cybertruck was alongside it, but the Semi was not hauling a trailer. The clip was a striking public appearance—not evidence of a race, a timed test, or commercial-haul performance.
What the 2022 video shows
Contemporary reporting said Tesla had posted the footage to its Instagram Stories before Tesla Owners Silicon Valley shared a clip on June 17, 2022. The report identified the venue as Michigan International Speedway; it was published on June 18. The original Story was temporary and was expected to disappear after 24 hours, so any surviving repost should be checked against the venue and date rather than assumed to be the same video. The reported scene is simple: the Semi moves around the speedway with its exterior lights illuminated, and a Cybertruck appears with it. No trailer or freight is visible. The available account does not identify the driver, exact filming time, truck configuration, or purpose of the appearance.

The setting may suggest racing, but the report provides no evidence that the Semi competed or completed a timed lap. It gives no verified speed, lap time, number of laps, battery state, energy use, braking data, payload, or test protocol. The footage shows that a drivable Semi was present and moving; it does not establish how the truck would perform under commercial loads or on a delivery route.

The absence of a trailer in this clip also proves neither that the truck could haul freight nor that it could not. It simply means the footage was not a hauling demonstration. Likewise, illuminated lights show the vehicle operating in the scene, not that it was production-ready or broadly available to buyers.
Why the sighting mattered in 2022
Tesla had unveiled the Semi in November 2017, but by June 2022 it had not reached broad customer delivery. Another public appearance therefore highlighted the gap between a vehicle Tesla could showcase and a truck fleets could obtain at scale. The contemporary report also mentioned an expected price below $200,000; that was a historical estimate, not a current listed price.

What happened after the speedway clip
- November 2017: Tesla unveiled the Semi. (Tesla Investor Relations)
- June 17, 2022: The Michigan International Speedway footage circulated publicly.
- October 7, 2022: Tesla said production was beginning and that PepsiCo deliveries would start in December, according to contemporaneous reporting.
- December 2022: Initial customer deliveries to PepsiCo were reported—months after the speedway appearance, not as a result demonstrated by it. (Reuters reporting via Investing.com)
Tesla Semi status and specifications in 2026
Updated as of August 2026: Tesla’s product page says Semi deliveries start in 2026 and lists Standard Range at approximately 325 miles and Long Range at approximately 500 miles. Tesla also states energy consumption of 1.7 kWh per mile, up to 800 kW of drive power, three independent motors on the rear axles, and a gross combination weight of 82,000 pounds. The current specifications should not be read back into the 2022 clip: the footage does not identify the vehicle’s battery, configuration, or production status, and it validates none of Tesla’s present range or charging estimates.
What fleet buyers need to know beyond the video
For a heavy truck, the commercial questions are practical: how far a loaded route runs, what payload remains within weight limits, whether the truck returns to a depot, how much time charging adds, and whether the site has enough electrical capacity. Buyers also need to weigh installation and utility work, driver and maintenance training, local service support, and total cost against diesel or other electric trucks.

Tesla’s business charging information describes a fleet-infrastructure path, not a consumer charger purchase. Its ordering page says businesses can begin through Tesla’s form and that a minimum of two charging posts are available. Neither those pages nor the speedway clip establish a public truck price, a firm delivery date for a particular buyer, or suitability for every route. (Tesla Semi charger inquiry)
The takeaway from the speedway appearance
The 2022 clip was an evocative showcase: a working Semi moving around a Michigan track beside a Cybertruck. It did not show a race, freight operation, or measurable performance test. The later PepsiCo deliveries and Tesla’s 2026 plans belong to the truck’s subsequent timeline; they do not turn that brief appearance into proof of commercial readiness.
