Yes—the spacecraft returned safely, but this was not a crewed Dragon carrying astronauts, and NASA did not livestream the splashdown. The event was NASA’s SpaceX CRS-34 cargo mission: an uncrewed Dragon delivered nearly 6,500 pounds of supplies and research to the International Space Station before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off California on June 17, 2026.
You can watch the official mission material on the SpaceX CRS-34 mission page and view NASA’s recorded CRS-34 undocking coverage.
What happened to SpaceX’s Dragon capsule?
The CRS-34 Cargo Dragon completed its return journey from the ISS after spending about 30 days attached to the station. It undocked on June 16 and splashed down safely at 5:11 a.m. PDT on June 17, 2026, in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast near Oceanside.
The spacecraft was uncrewed. It carried cargo to the station and returned science samples, experiment hardware, and station equipment to Earth for further analysis.

- NASA+ undocking replay: NASA’s recorded coverage of Dragon departing the ISS.
NASA announced that it would not livestream the splashdown itself. As a result, available official footage may show the undocking, Dragon’s departure from the station, mission animations, or post-event coverage rather than a live view of the ocean landing.
CRS-34 mission timeline
| Event | Date and time |
|---|---|
| Falcon 9 launch | May 15, 2026, at 6:05 p.m. EDT |
| Dragon arrival at the ISS | May 17, 2026 |
| Undocking | June 16, 2026, at 12:25 p.m. EDT |
| Confirmed splashdown | June 17, 2026, at 5:11 a.m. PDT |
The confirmed splashdown time was 5:11 a.m. PDT. Earlier mission advisories gave an approximate target of 5:08 a.m. PDT, but the post-event confirmation takes precedence.

Which mission was it?
CRS-34 was SpaceX’s 34th Commercial Resupply Services mission to the ISS for NASA. The Falcon 9 launched the Dragon from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Dragon later docked with the forward-facing port of the station’s Harmony module.

What did Dragon deliver to the ISS?
Dragon carried nearly 6,500 pounds of food, supplies, equipment, and scientific investigations for the Expedition 74 crew. Representative payloads included:
- Bioprinted organ and cartilage tissue investigations;
- Research into cryogenic fuel storage for future space missions;
- DNA-inspired materials research related to possible cancer treatments;
- An ocular imaging device for monitoring astronauts’ eye health;
- A sorbent bed designed to filter trace contaminants from cabin air; and
- A separator pump for the station’s waste and hygiene compartment.
These were research investigations and equipment—not completed cancer treatments, artificial organs, or final engineering breakthroughs. Any scientific conclusions depend on analysis after the samples and hardware return to Earth.

What came back to Earth?
The returning Dragon brought back research samples, experiment hardware, maintenance equipment, and other materials that required examination on Earth. That return capability is one of the spacecraft’s most important advantages: it can deliver supplies into orbit and bring substantial cargo back for laboratory analysis.

Cargo Dragon versus Crew Dragon
Cargo Dragon is designed for uncrewed ISS resupply missions and research transport. Crew Dragon is the version used to carry astronauts. CRS-34 involved the cargo spacecraft, so no astronauts returned aboard it.
Although SpaceX is Elon Musk’s company, this was a NASA–SpaceX commercial resupply mission. Describing it as “Elon Musk’s Dragon” can obscure the more relevant facts: SpaceX operated the spacecraft for NASA, and the mission’s purpose was ISS logistics and science.
Why the return mattered
CRS-34 successfully completed more than a delivery run. It returned time-sensitive research and equipment from orbit, allowing investigators to continue their work in Earth-based laboratories. The mission also demonstrated the continuing role of reusable commercial spacecraft in supporting the ISS.
