Short answer: Authorities said Luigi Mangione had a 3D-printed or privately made 9mm pistol and suppressor when he was arrested, and later court records said the recovered gun fired shell casings found at the crime scene. But the public record does not establish that every part of the pistol was made by a 3D printer.
What happened to Brian Thompson?
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. He had been attending UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference.
Surveillance footage showed a masked gunman in dark clothing and carrying a backpack. Five days later, Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after employees recognized him from media coverage. Investigators said they recovered a backpack containing a 9mm gun, ammunition, a loaded magazine and a suppressor.

The New York court record also describes DNA and fingerprint evidence connecting Mangione to objects associated with the shooter’s route, including a water bottle, cellphone, backpack and food wrapper. The court’s September 2025 decision summarizes that evidence and the investigation.

What did police mean by “3D-printed pistol”?
Contemporaneous police statements and the Pennsylvania arrest complaint described the recovered black pistol and suppressor as 3D-printed. Reporting also described the pistol as lacking a conventional manufacturer’s serial number.
That wording does not necessarily mean the entire gun was printed from plastic. In many privately made firearms, a printed frame, receiver or housing is combined with metal components and other commercially available parts. The publicly identified court records confirm the recovery of a 9mm firearm and its ballistic connection to the shooting, but do not specify exactly which components were printed.
Claims identifying a particular design or model circulated in firearms and 3D-printing communities. Those identifications remain speculation unless supported by a forensic report, court exhibit or other primary evidence. The case record cited here does not establish a specific design.

“Ghost gun” and “3D-printed gun” are not the same thing
Ghost gun is a common journalistic term, not the formal name of a separate firearm category. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives generally uses privately made firearm, or PMF, for a firearm made by an individual rather than acquired as a conventionally manufactured, serialized firearm. ATF’s explanation of privately made firearms notes that a PMF may be made using different methods, including 3D printing.
- A firearm can be privately made without being 3D-printed.
- A firearm can contain 3D-printed parts without being entirely plastic.
- A missing serial number can make traditional records-based tracing harder, but it does not make a weapon literally untraceable.
Investigators may still use ballistic markings, DNA, fingerprints, surveillance footage, digital evidence, witness accounts and records relating to materials or components. This case illustrates why a serial number is only one source of evidence.
Was the recovered gun the weapon used in the killing?
Early reports appropriately used cautious language because the investigation was still developing. Later, the New York court record described a more specific forensic conclusion: three shell casings recovered at the crime scene had been fired by the 9mm gun found in Mangione’s backpack.

That ballistic finding is the strongest publicly described link between the recovered firearm and the shooting. It establishes which gun fired the casings; it does not, by itself, establish how the firearm was manufactured or who printed any component.

- Ballistics: The court said the recovered gun fired the casings found at the scene.
- Surveillance: Video documented the shooting and the suspect’s movements before and afterward.
- DNA and fingerprints: Investigators found biological and fingerprint evidence on objects connected to the shooter’s route, according to the court.
- Possession at arrest: The gun and suppressor were recovered from Mangione’s backpack.
- Written material: Prosecutors cited notebook entries and letters in discussing planning and motive. That evidence should be distinguished from forensic proof about the weapon itself.
What role did the suppressor play?
Authorities said a suppressor—often called a silencer in statutes and ordinary legal reporting—was recovered with the pistol. The federal prosecution included a charge involving use of a silencer in a crime of violence, as summarized by the New York court.
A suppressor reduces muzzle blast; it does not make a gunshot silent. The public record summarized here also does not establish, separately from possession of the device, every detail of how it was used during the shooting.

What remains uncertain?
Several details should not be presented as settled facts:
- Which specific components of the pistol were 3D-printed.
- Whether the firearm was entirely printed, rather than a hybrid of printed and metal parts.
- The precise design or model of the weapon.
- Whether the suppressor was used for every shot or merely recovered with the gun.
- Who manufactured each component and how it was obtained.
Those unanswered questions do not erase the ballistic finding. They define the narrower point that the evidence supports: authorities described the gun as 3D-printed or privately made, while court records linked the recovered 9mm firearm to casings from the crime scene.
How the legal case developed
The legal record changed substantially after the initial December 2024 headlines. In September 2025, a New York court found sufficient evidence for the intentional second-degree murder charge and several weapons counts, while dismissing terrorism counts as legally insufficient. A separate New York decision dated May 18, 2026 addressed motions seeking to suppress evidence and statements connected with the arrest and investigation. Read that decision.
On August 14, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court to stalking charges connected to Thompson’s killing. AP reported that federal prosecutors cited a 3D-printed 9mm pistol found in his backpack as matching the weapon used in the killing. The federal guilty plea should not be treated as an automatic resolution of every New York charge. Federal and state cases involve different charges and legal elements, and the state litigation had continued at least through the May 2026 suppression decision.
Why the distinction matters
The phrase “3D-printed ghost gun” combines two related but different ideas. It can suggest that a complete plastic weapon emerged from a printer, when the evidence may instead concern a printed major component assembled with other parts. It can also imply that the weapon is impossible to identify, even though forensic and investigative evidence can connect a privately made firearm to a crime.
The case is therefore best described precisely: police and prosecutors said Mangione possessed a 3D-printed or otherwise privately made 9mm pistol and suppressor; later court records said the recovered gun fired casings from the shooting; and the publicly available record does not identify every printed component.
Firearm-manufacturing and possession laws vary by country and, in the United States, by state. Federal rules also depend on factors such as the maker’s legal status, the firearm’s detectability, transfers and regulated components.
