Verdict: The “70% off” claim was broadly based on a real 2025 launch promotion, but it was not an unconditional price cut on every Galaxy S25. The figure most likely referred to the Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB, after applying Samsung’s maximum reported $900 trade-in credit to its $1,299.99 launch MSRP. That worked out to about 69.2%, rounded to 70%.
The launch promotion ran around the January 22, 2025 announcement and February 7, 2025 general release. It should now be treated as historical unless a current Samsung or carrier checkout explicitly shows the same terms.
How the 70% figure was calculated
The calculation was:
- Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB launch MSRP: $1,299.99
- Maximum reported U.S. trade-in credit: up to $900
- $900 ÷ $1,299.99 = 69.2%
- Remaining phone price before tax and other costs: $399.99
That is a maximum trade-in-credit percentage, not proof that Samsung reduced the retail price by 70% for everyone. You had to surrender an eligible phone, and the $900 figure applied only to selected devices in qualifying condition.
The $900 credit was reported during the launch period by TechRadar. Samsung’s official announcement confirms the launch timing and trade-in program context in its Galaxy S25 launch announcement.

It probably meant the S25 Ultra, not the standard S25
The headline is misleading because “Galaxy S25” can describe the entire series. The launch prices show why the Ultra is the likely source of the calculation:

The MSRP figures come from Samsung’s U.S. MSRP price list. A headline saying simply “Galaxy S25 is 70% off” therefore combines model names and leaves out the storage tier.

The launch package was a collection of separate benefits, not one universal discount:

- Enhanced trade-in credit: up to $900 in the U.S., depending on the old device and its condition.
- Samsung credit: launch-period coverage reported up to $300 in Samsung credit. This was not necessarily a reduction in the phone’s cash price and could be restricted to eligible Samsung purchases.
- Storage upgrades: some pre-order configurations included a higher storage tier for the price of a lower one.
- Accessory and protection promotions: launch offers could include discounts on accessories, Galaxy Buds, or Samsung Care+, depending on the market and exact promotion.
- Carrier incentives: T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T advertised separate offers that used eligible plans, installment agreements, trade-ins, or monthly bill credits.
Samsung announced the series on January 22, 2025, with pre-orders opening that day and general availability beginning February 7, 2025. The strongest benefits were tied to that launch window, although individual promotions could have different deadlines.
What you needed for the maximum trade-in value
“Up to $900” did not mean every old phone received $900. The maximum generally required a selected recent premium device listed in Samsung’s promotional trade-in table. Your actual value depended on:
- the exact model and storage capacity;
- working power and battery behavior;
- display and physical condition;
- whether the phone was blacklisted, leased, or still subject to financing;
- ownership and carrier eligibility;
- removal of personal information and account locks; and
- shipping the device within Samsung’s required deadline.
Samsung’s launch terms required the trade-in phone to power on, hold a charge, have a functioning display, avoid prohibited damage, and not be blacklisted. The phone also had to be reset, removed from iCloud, Google, Samsung, or other activation locks, and owned by the customer. Review the current terms at Samsung’s launch materials before relying on any quoted value.

Common trade-in problems
- Inspection downgrade: Samsung may reduce or claw back the credit if the received phone does not match the submitted condition.
- Late shipment: missing the return deadline can trigger a chargeback.
- Activation locks: an iCloud, Google, Samsung, or carrier lock can invalidate the trade-in.
- Cracked screens: a damage exception may exist for some offers, but it must be confirmed for the specific promotion.
- Financed or leased phones: you may not be able to trade in a device you do not own outright.
Samsung.com and carrier deals were not the same

Samsung’s direct purchase generally applied the trade-in value at checkout as instant savings. You still paid the remaining balance, either upfront or through available financing, and shipped the old phone after receiving the new one. Samsung’s S25 offers page describes trade-in savings, but pages can retain generic or expired promotional references. Current wording is not proof that the 2025 launch deal remains active.

Carrier installment promotions
Carrier advertisements could make an S25-series phone appear free or nearly free, but the discount was commonly distributed as monthly bill credits over a fixed term. Requirements could include:
- a new line or eligible upgrade;
- a qualifying unlimited plan;
- an installment agreement;
- continued service until all credits were paid; and
- payment of taxes, activation fees, and any remaining balance if you cancel early.
For comparison, see the launch terms from T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. These offers should not be treated as equivalent to buying an unlocked phone from Samsung.

A carrier “free phone” may be worthwhile if you already want the qualifying plan and will stay for the full credit period. It can be a poor deal if the required plan costs more than your current service or if you expect to upgrade or switch carriers early.

Use this formula rather than trusting the percentage in a headline:
New-phone price − actual trade-in value − promotional trade-in credit − immediately usable discount + taxes and fees + required plan or financing costs − realistic resale value of the old phone if sold elsewhere.

Do not count Samsung store credit as cash unless you would have bought the eligible accessories or services anyway. A $300 credit that expires or can be spent only on products you would not otherwise purchase is worth less than $300 to you.
Also compare Samsung’s quote with a private sale and other trade-in programs. A recent, undamaged iPhone or Galaxy Ultra may sell for more privately than Samsung’s trade-in value, even if Samsung’s headline credit looks larger.
Is the 70% deal still available?
Not as the original launch promotion. The S25 series was announced on January 22, 2025, pre-orders began that day, and general availability started February 7, 2025. As of the supplied August 18, 2026 status check—and absent a newer, model-specific checkout confirmation—the launch deal should be considered expired.

Before describing any offer as current, select the exact model, storage tier, trade-in phone, and destination at checkout and read the dated terms.
Who should consider the S25 deal?
The launch promotion was most attractive to someone who:
- owned a recent premium phone eligible for a high trade-in value;
- wanted the S25 Ultra specifically;
- could meet Samsung’s condition and shipping requirements;
- could use Samsung credit on purchases they genuinely needed; or
- already used a qualifying carrier plan and intended to keep it through the full installment period.
It was less attractive to someone with a low-value trade-in, a leased device, a phone worth more through private sale, or a need to change to a more expensive carrier plan. Buyers focused purely on value should also compare discounted previous-generation phones instead of assuming the newest flagship is the cheapest option.
