VolumeMixer was real, but it was not a normal iPhone feature. Reported on November 2, 2020, it was a jailbreak tweak for devices running jailbroken iOS 10 through iOS 14. It added per-app volume controls, but it did not give ordinary, stock iPhones a built-in audio mixer. Today, the closest no-jailbreak option is an app-open Shortcuts automation that changes the iPhone’s shared media volume.
What VolumeMixer was
VolumeMixer was a free jailbreak tweak, not an App Store app. According to the original 2020 report, users could choose which apps the tweak managed and assign individualized volume levels to them. Its interface could be opened with an iPhone volume button or an Activator action.
The tweak also reportedly included an option for web-based audio sources and an audio-mixing option intended to prevent music apps from being interrupted. Those details come from a specialist jailbreak report, not from Apple or a current developer support page. The report identified compatibility with jailbroken iOS 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 devices. No—not as a universal, user-facing mixer. Apple’s standard iPhone controls adjust system output volume. The side buttons, Control Center, and Siri can change media volume; depending on what the iPhone is doing and whether Change with Buttons is enabled, the buttons can also affect ringer, alert, and sound-effect volume. iOS also provides limits for headphone and speaker volume. Apple’s developer documentation describes AVAudioSession.outputVolume as the systemwide output volume, ranging from 0.0 to 1.0. A third-party app cannot simply set that system value arbitrarily as if it owned a central mixer; the user controls the final system output level through system controls. Individual apps can still provide their own audio controls. A game might have separate sliders for music, effects, and voice chat, while a media app may offer its own playback volume. Those controls affect that app’s internal audio mix. They do not create a systemwide panel with an independent slider for every installed app. Apple’s audio-mixing guidance.

Set a different volume preset for each app with Shortcuts
For most users, Shortcuts provides a practical approximation without jailbreaking. It changes the shared media-volume setting when a chosen app opens.
- Open Shortcuts and tap Automation.
- Create a new personal automation and choose App as the trigger.
- Select the app you want to configure.
- Choose Is Opened.
- Add the Set Volume action.
- Enter the desired percentage—for example, 60% for a podcast app or 25% for a game.
- Turn off Ask Before Running, if that option is available, then save the automation.
- Repeat the process for other apps.
Apple documents app-open and app-close triggers, action setup, testing, and automatic execution in its personal-automation guide. Menu names and behavior can vary between iOS releases.

Restore a general volume when leaving an app
If changing volume every time you open an app becomes inconvenient, create a second automation using the same app trigger and select Is Closed. Add Set Volume with your preferred general volume. Use this only if you want the iPhone to restore a default level when you leave the app.
Shortcuts troubleshooting
- If nothing happens, check Shortcuts > Automation and confirm the automation is enabled.
- Make sure the trigger says Is Opened, not Is Closed.
- Confirm that Set Volume is present and uses a fixed percentage rather than an unresolved variable.
- Disable the automation if it changes volume when you open an app only to read or browse.
- Remember that switching apps can change the shared volume even when the selected app is not playing audio.
Why this is not a true mixer
Suppose you set a podcast app to 60% and a game to 25%. When you open the game, the automation changes the iPhone’s shared media volume to 25%. If podcast audio is still playing in the background, it is affected by that same system volume. Shortcuts does not create separate simultaneous sliders such as:

Whether two apps play together at all depends on their audio-session behavior. Some apps interrupt other audio, while others mix with or duck it. A volume preset cannot override every app’s playback policy.
What about current App Store utilities?
The App Store listing for App Volume: a volume per app advertises per-app targets, profiles, widgets, Control Center access, Shortcuts integration, and iCloud backup. The listing presents it as a convenience layer for applying preferred volume settings, not as proof of independent concurrent audio-stream mixing. This type of utility may be more convenient than manually maintaining several automations. It is a reasonable fit for users who want a quieter game or louder podcast when launching an app, but not for someone who needs independently adjustable audio from multiple active apps.

Jailbreak and compatibility considerations
The VolumeMixer evidence is tied to a November 2020 report and jailbroken iOS 10–14. Do not assume that it works on a current iPhone, installs from the App Store, or remains available through BigBoss. An old tweak may depend on unavailable packages, conflict with other tweaks, or fail after an iOS update.
Jailbreaking can also complicate software updates, troubleshooting, security-sensitive apps, banking apps, and normal Apple support expectations. That does not make every jailbreak unsafe, but it makes a historical tweak a poor recommendation for most users seeking a simple volume preset.

Verdict
The headline is historically accurate only when “VolumeMixer” means a jailbreak tweak. It reportedly delivered per-app volume preferences on supported jailbroken iOS 10–14 devices, but it was never a native feature of stock iOS. For a current ordinary iPhone, use an app’s own audio controls or create Shortcuts automations that set a volume preset—while remembering that neither option is a true systemwide mixer.
