VMware Workstation 15 Pro is an old numbered release in the VMware Workstation Pro family; “VMware Workstation Pro” without a number normally means the continuing, modern product line. This is therefore an old-version-versus-current-version decision, not a choice between two separate products. Keep Workstation 15 for a validated legacy environment, but choose a current Workstation Pro release for new installations, modern operating systems, security, and Windows 11 or current Linux workflows.
The naming confusion, explained
Workstation 15 Pro identifies the 15.x generation. Workstation Pro is the product name used across multiple generations, including 15, 16, 17 and later releases. Check Help → About VMware Workstation to see the exact version and build installed.
Workstation Pro should not be confused with the historical Workstation Player edition. Broadcom’s FAQ says Player reached end of sale and that the more capable Pro editions replaced that distinction. VMware’s Desktop Hypervisor FAQ also distinguishes Workstation Pro for Windows and Linux from Fusion Pro, the macOS product.

Is VMware Workstation Pro free?
What applied to Workstation 15
Workstation 15 Pro was sold as a commercial product and uses the legacy serial-number workflow. Broadcom’s older instructions identify Help → Enter Serial Number as the activation path: legacy licensing guidance. An existing Workstation 15 key is not the same as a modern free-use entitlement.

What applies to newer releases
Broadcom’s current licensing notice says the free version for personal and commercial use starts with Workstation Pro 17.5.2 and later: download and licensing guidance. A Broadcom support account is required to obtain downloads. This policy does not retroactively make a Workstation 15 installation free, and commercial support or enterprise arrangements remain separate from download access.
What Workstation 15 already included
Workstation 15 Pro was not a basic player. It provided multiple simultaneous virtual machines, snapshots, cloning, configurable virtual networks, VM encryption, advanced virtual-hardware settings, shared folders and host/guest integration, vSphere connectivity and command-line automation such as vmrun. Broadcom’s comparison guidance describes these as Pro capabilities: Workstation feature guidance.
Where modern Workstation Pro matters
Current host and guest support
New Windows releases, Windows 11 security requirements, current Linux kernels and newer Intel and AMD platforms can expose driver or compatibility problems in a 15.x installation. Broadcom’s 15.x CPU guidance targets processors launched in 2011 or later, with listed Intel Atom and AMD Llano/Bobcat exceptions; that is an age-of-target statement, not a guarantee that every modern host works: CPU requirements.

Compatibility depends on the complete matrix: Workstation build, host edition and OS, CPU, guest OS, virtual-hardware level, firmware settings and Windows hypervisor features. A newer release can often open an older VM, but upgrading its virtual hardware can prevent that VM from opening in Workstation 15.
Virtual hardware, graphics and networking
The current product page advertises VMs with up to 32 virtual CPUs and 128 GB of RAM, shared or mirrored folders, IPv4 and IPv6 virtual-network configuration, latency and bandwidth simulation, container or Kubernetes isolation, and DirectX 11 and OpenGL support. These are current-product claims and should not be assigned automatically to Workstation 15: Workstation and Fusion product page.
Windows 11 considerations
Windows 11 guests may require UEFI, Secure Boot and a virtual TPM. Host performance and compatibility can also be affected by Intel VT-x or AMD-V settings and by Hyper-V or virtualization-based security (VBS). A newer Workstation release does not eliminate every Hyper-V, driver-signing or VBS issue; firmware, Windows edition, VMware build and other hypervisors still matter.

Security and support reality
Workstation 15 is a legacy release. Workstation Pro 15.5.7 appears in Broadcom security-advisory material, but that historical reference is not evidence of continuing 15.x maintenance: Broadcom security-advisory material. Its age means it should not be the default for a new, internet-connected or security-sensitive workstation unless a specific legacy requirement demands it. Old host drivers, USB handling, virtual networking and outdated encryption components expand the maintenance burden.
Should you upgrade?
Choose modern Workstation Pro when
- You are installing a hypervisor on a new Windows or Linux PC.
- You need current Windows or Linux guests, Windows 11 features, modern kernels or current CPUs.
- You need current networking, graphics, cloning, snapshots, vSphere connectivity or development workflows.
- You want the newer free-use policy and an actively maintained product line.
Keep Workstation 15 temporarily when
- A fixed legacy lab has been validated only on 15.x.
- An old host OS, plugin, driver or virtual-hardware level must remain unchanged.
- The machine is offline or strongly isolated and reproducibility matters more than new features.
- Procurement or licensing requires the already-owned release.
Consider another hypervisor when
- VirtualBox: you prefer an open-source-oriented, cross-platform desktop alternative and do not need VMware-specific behavior.
- Hyper-V: you use a compatible Windows edition and want Microsoft’s integrated virtualization stack. See Microsoft Hyper-V documentation.
- Proxmox VE: you need a server or homelab platform rather than a desktop application. See Proxmox VE.
- Fusion Pro: your host is macOS; Workstation is the Windows/Linux product. Both are presented on the desktop hypervisor page.
Safe migration from Workstation 15
- Shut down the guest completely; do not migrate a suspended state.
- Record the VM’s virtual-hardware level, network mappings, encryption passwords, vTPM details and any linked clones.
- Copy or clone the entire VM directory, including the
.vmx, virtual disks, snapshots and NVRAM files. - Install the newer Workstation Pro and open the copy, not the original.
- Test booting, networking, USB, shared folders, clipboard, display resizing, time synchronization, snapshots and application behavior.
- Install or update VMware Tools inside the guest if the new build requires it.
- Only then consider “Upgrade this virtual machine.” That changes virtual hardware and can remove backward compatibility with Workstation 15.
- Keep the original, untouched VM until normal workloads have completed successfully.
Encrypted VMs, vTPMs, snapshots, linked clones, PCI or USB pass-through and custom virtual networks deserve extra testing. Opening the VM proves only that it starts; it does not prove that its devices and applications still work.
Downloading safely
Use Broadcom’s support portal, support.broadcom.com, and sign in with the required account. Portal labels and archived-download access can change, and an old installer such as 15.5.7 may not be offered to every account. Do not use “cracked,” repackaged or unofficial VMware installers simply because newer Workstation Pro releases can be free.

Bottom line
Workstation 15 Pro and Workstation Pro are not competing product categories. Workstation 15 is an old Pro release; modern Workstation Pro is the current line. Keep 15.x only when a tested legacy environment requires it. For a new installation or a current Windows/Linux workload, use a supported modern Workstation Pro release, back up every VM, and treat virtual-hardware upgrades as a separate, potentially irreversible migration step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a newer Workstation Pro open a Workstation 15 VM?
Often yes, but opening is not full validation. Test the VM on a copied directory and do not upgrade its virtual hardware until you no longer need Workstation 15 compatibility.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I use a Workstation 15 key with a newer release?
Do not assume so. Legacy serial licensing and the newer free-use policy are different entitlement systems; check the license terms for your specific key.
Does Workstation 15 support Windows 11?
Do not treat it as a blanket yes or no. UEFI, Secure Boot, vTPM, host Hyper-V/VBS settings, the exact Workstation build and the host hardware all affect the result.
Is Workstation Player still the current lightweight option?
No. Broadcom says Player reached end of sale and the Pro editions superseded that separate product distinction.
