The vivo X100 Ultra is no longer an upcoming phone. vivo announced it in China on May 13, 2024, and its satellite feature is genuine—but narrowly defined. Only the 16GB RAM/1TB storage version supports two-way Tiantong satellite communication, and activation requires a compatible Chinese carrier service, typically through China Telecom. It should not be treated as a globally usable or officially US-market satellite phone.
What happened to the “expected soon” launch?
vivo announced the X100 Ultra alongside the X100s and X100s Pro on May 13, 2024, with China availability listed for May 2024. The earlier satellite reports were therefore confirmed, but the finished product was more restricted than a generic “satellite-ready” rumor suggested. The capability is limited to one storage configuration, uses China’s Tiantong system, and requires carrier provisioning.

vivo’s consumer specifications identify only the 16GB + 1TB model as supporting two-way satellite communication. The lower-storage versions do not qualify.

Those were China launch prices announced by vivo; an imported handset can cost considerably more after shipping, taxes, seller margins and warranty risk. Do not assume that another X100 Ultra variant contains dormant satellite hardware: vivo’s published documentation treats the 1TB version as the satellite model.
What does the satellite function actually do?
vivo describes the feature as Tiantong two-way satellite communication, not merely satellite positioning. In the supported service area, the phone can provide:
- Two-way voice communication
- Text messaging
- Location services
- A professional rescue mode
- One-tap access to a Blue Sky Rescue team telephone number
- Access to selected vehicle-insurance and automotive-brand support numbers
These functions require a satellite connection and are not available simply because cellular service has disappeared. Coverage, account status, applicable fees and the exact service area all matter. Satellite communication is also different from GPS/GNSS: positioning alone does not send calls or messages.

How activation and connection work
vivo says users must contact a carrier or activate the service through the China Telecom app. The manufacturer’s guidance also requires an unobstructed view of the sky and physical phone alignment.
- Buy the documented 16GB + 1TB satellite version.
- Obtain compatible Chinese carrier service and complete activation through the carrier or China Telecom app.
- Enter an area covered by the Tiantong service.
- Open the phone’s Tiantong satellite-communication function.
- Move outdoors with as clear a view of the sky as possible.
- Point and rotate the phone as the on-screen alignment instructions indicate.
- Wait for the satellite link before attempting supported calls, messages or location functions.

Is the X100 Ultra available in the United States?
There is no confirmed official US retail launch in the cited sources. In May 2024, vivo told Android Authority that it had no plans at that time to launch the phone outside Mainland China. That statement should not be stretched into a claim that no later imports exist, but an importer listing is not the same as US availability.

A China-market handset generally uses OriginOS 4 based on Android 14 and Chinese network provisioning. Before importing, verify:

- VoLTE activation and calling support
- Google Play, banking apps and Android Auto compatibility
- Firmware-update behavior outside China
- Whether the seller is supplying the genuine 16GB + 1TB satellite model
- Warranty, repair and return arrangements
- Whether China Telecom/Tiantong activation is possible for you
The official specification lists Chinese carrier and frequency support and warns that actual functionality depends on carrier availability, infrastructure deployment and software.

The X100 Ultra is a China-market flagship built around a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, a 6.78-inch 2K display, a 5,500mAh battery, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and dual nano-SIM support. Its headline camera is a 200MP APO telephoto camera using a 1/1.4-inch sensor. Those specifications may appeal to photography enthusiasts, but they do not remove the regional limits of the satellite ecosystem.

Who should consider it—and who should not?
Reasonable candidates
- China-based buyers who can obtain the required carrier service
- Importers comfortable with China-market software and warranty limitations
- Photography enthusiasts who specifically want the X100 Ultra camera system
- Collectors who understand that the satellite function is geographically restricted
Poor candidates
- US buyers seeking dependable emergency satellite messaging
- Anyone requiring an official local warranty or guaranteed carrier support
- Users dependent on guaranteed Google services, Android Auto or regional banking features
- Buyers unable to obtain a Chinese carrier account
- Anyone interpreting “satellite communication” as worldwide coverage
The satellite functions can assist communication, but they are not a substitute for a certified emergency communicator or local emergency service.
Alternatives for international buyers

Bottom line for buyers outside China
The vivo X100 Ultra is a real two-way satellite-communication phone, but only in its 16GB + 1TB configuration and only within the Tiantong/Chinese carrier ecosystem. For a China-based user who can activate that service, it combines flagship hardware with calls, texts and rescue-oriented tools beyond cellular coverage. For a US buyer wanting reliable local emergency connectivity, an officially supported phone or dedicated satellite communicator is the safer choice.
