Vivaldi 6.8 launched for desktop on June 20, 2024. Its biggest change was Vivaldi Mail 2.0, which added quicker replies, undo for certain mail actions, and broader message prefetching. The browser also added periodically updated memory figures to tab tooltips, making it easier to spot resource-heavy tabs. This is a look back at that release—not a report of a new 2026 update.
What Vivaldi 6.8 included
Vivaldi 6.8 was a desktop browser release, and Mail 2.0 arrived as part of its integrated desktop mail client—not as a separate mail application. The release focused on practical changes for people who handle email and many open tabs:
- Quick Reply and undo for selected actions in Vivaldi Mail.
- Mail prefetching and one-, two-, or three-line message previews.
- Per-tab memory information in tab tooltips.
- Memory Saver support for hibernating inactive tabs.
- Smaller changes to search suggestions, the address field, Workspaces, Calendar, language support, and blocking features.
Vivaldi’s release announcement dates the update to June 20, 2024. The browser has had later releases since then; readers installing today should use the current supported version from Vivaldi’s official download page, rather than treating 6.8 as current.

Vivaldi Mail 2.0: quicker replies and safer bulk actions
Quick Reply
Quick Reply adds a reply field at the bottom of a viewed message, so a short response can be sent without opening the full composer. It is useful for routine inbox processing and reduces the steps between reading and replying. For a message that needs extensive formatting, attachments, recipient changes, or more detailed editing, use the full composer instead.

Undo for up to 200 recent actions
Mail 2.0 lets users undo up to 200 recent supported actions: moving messages to Trash, marking them read, or marking them unread. That can be valuable after selecting the wrong messages in a bulk operation. The published scope is specific; it does not mean every action in Mail can be undone.
Prefetching: better local search, more local data
By default, Mail began downloading messages from the previous 30 days, as well as messages currently visible on screen. The downloaded content supports local indexing, search, previews, and access when offline. Vivaldi’s announcement described prefetch intervals of one day, one week, one month, one year, or all messages; selecting opened messages limits broad prefetching.
The setting path documented for the 6.8-era feature was Settings > Mail > Sync Options. Later versions may organize or label settings differently.

Offline availability depends on what has actually synchronized. Local copies do not replace the provider’s server-side retention or a separate backup, and storing email on a computer may matter if that device is shared or managed. If disk space, bandwidth, or local data exposure is a concern, choose a narrower prefetch interval. Vivaldi’s changelog also listed fixes for IMAP synchronization issues, including Yahoo/AOL constraints and stalled prefetch progress, so provider-specific behavior remains relevant.
Message previews and download order
Mail 2.0 can show one, two, or three lines of message-body text. Previews appear automatically in vertical view and can also be enabled in horizontal and wide-vertical layouts. They help scan an inbox, but viewing more message content may increase what is downloaded locally, depending on sync settings.
Vivaldi also said Mail downloads were faster and newer messages were prioritized. The release announcement did not provide a measured speed improvement, so this is a description of the release change, not a quantified benchmark.
Per-tab memory figures: useful, but not a system-wide monitor
In Vivaldi 6.8, hovering over a tab displays memory-use information for that tab. The figure is updated periodically, rather than representing only the tab’s initial load. It can therefore rise as a page loads scripts, media, ads, or background activity.
This is diagnostic information, not a promise that Vivaldi uses less RAM and not a complete report of operating-system memory. A large figure does not by itself prove that a page is broken: video, web apps, conferencing tools, and complex dashboards may consume substantial resources normally. Browser processes and measurement methods also differ, so do not treat the tooltip number as a directly comparable benchmark against another browser or an OS-level total.
Memory Saver and Task Manager
The memory tooltip tells you what a tab is using; it does not free memory. Memory Saver is the separate feature that can hibernate inactive tabs to release resources. Vivaldi’s performance-settings documentation describes automatic hibernation of tabs that have not been used for a while. A hibernated page may need to reload when restored, so consider the effect on work that depends on persistent page state. You can also hibernate tabs manually through tab controls where available.
For a closer browser-level look, press Shift+Esc to open Vivaldi’s Task Manager. Use it when a tab appears unusually demanding, a page freezes, or you suspect an extension is involved. It helps investigate browser activity; it does not identify every cause of memory use on the computer.
Other changes in the release
Beyond Mail and tab resources, the changelog listed search suggestions for new users, suggested URLs for Google, Yahoo, and Startpage, and refinements to address-field focus and its dropdown. Calendar gained account names beside calendar names and improved account-name suggestions. Vivaldi also reported underlying tracker- and ad-blocker changes, more Workspaces improvements, and Georgian and Sinhala language support, bringing the announced total to 55 languages at the time.

The release included numerous Mail, Calendar, and general bug fixes. These are useful maintenance changes, but they are less consequential for most users than the mail workflow and tab-memory additions.

Who benefits most from Vivaldi Mail?
Vivaldi Mail is a client for existing accounts, not a hosted email service. Vivaldi says it supports IMAP and POP3 and can bring multiple accounts together; see its Mail feature overview. That makes the 6.8 changes most relevant to desktop users with multiple accounts, large inboxes, or a preference for local search alongside their browser, calendar, and feeds.
- Multi-account desktop email user: A potentially good fit if consolidating accounts and local search are useful.
- Large inbox or frequent offline work: Prefetching may help, but review storage and sync settings first.
- Low-storage device or webmail-only user: The local database and added client may not be worthwhile.
- Mobile-first user: Mail, Calendar, and Feed Reader are desktop-oriented features; do not assume mobile feature parity.
- User seeking only a minimal browser: The integrated productivity suite may be more than needed, and the memory display alone will not make a browser lighter.
To compare alternatives, consider whether you need a local client or hosted email, offline search, multiple-account support, mobile continuity, corporate controls, and backup or export options. Vivaldi Mail does not replace Gmail, Outlook.com, Proton Mail, or Fastmail as the underlying mail provider. Readers who want a browser without Vivaldi’s integrated mail workflow can also compare browser-only options such as Brave or Chrome.
Should you install Vivaldi 6.8?
For someone using Vivaldi at the time, 6.8 was a meaningful productivity update if Mail was part of their routine or they wanted better visibility into tab resource use. Its mail changes made the built-in client more convenient for everyday processing, while prefetching traded additional local storage and synchronization for better search and access to downloaded mail. The tab tooltip added a clue for troubleshooting, not a memory-saving mechanism.
Because 6.8 is a 2024 release, installing that old build now can leave a user without later fixes and security updates. Use the current supported Vivaldi release unless a specific compatibility need requires an older build, and obtain installers only through Vivaldi’s official download page. Current system requirements are not necessarily the same as the requirements for 6.8; consult Vivaldi’s current installation documentation for present-day compatibility.
