Choose Notepad++ for fast, uncomplicated text and source-code editing on Windows. Choose Visual Studio Code (VS Code) for multi-file projects, language intelligence, Git, debugging, terminals, remote development, and extensibility. Many people sensibly use both: Notepad++ for quick edits and VS Code for development.
This comparison is about Visual Studio Code, Microsoft’s cross-platform code editor—not the separate, full Visual Studio IDE.

Both are free for ordinary local editing. Optional AI services, cloud environments, commercial extensions, and enterprise support can add costs to a workflow; they are not required by either core editor.
The fundamental difference: editor versus development environment
Visual Studio Code
VS Code is an editor-first application that can become a development environment through built-in tools and extensions. Its official feature set includes IntelliSense, code navigation, refactoring, debugging, Git integration, tasks, terminals, workspaces, and extensions. Language-specific capabilities often require an extension plus the relevant SDK or runtime. See the official overview.

Notepad++
Notepad++ is a free, open-source Windows text and source-code editor. It concentrates on tabs, syntax highlighting, search and replace, regular expressions, macros, column editing, encoding and line-ending controls, and plugins. It is not a full IDE; plugins can add functions without changing its fundamentally file-centered workflow. Project information is available at notepad-plus-plus.org and its source repository.
Platforms, installation, and resource use
VS Code officially supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Notepad++ is a native Windows application; running it through Wine, a virtual machine, or another compatibility layer is not equivalent to official macOS or Linux support. VS Code’s requirements page describes a download under 200 MB, a disk footprint below 500 MB, a 1.6 GHz-or-faster processor, and 1 GB of RAM as baseline requirements—not performance guarantees for large workspaces or many extensions. Check current requirements and Windows installation options for the release you install.
Notepad++ generally feels lighter for a simple file, but no universal “faster” or fixed memory ratio is established here. Open-file count and size, plugins or extensions, indexing, syntax highlighting, search scope, settings, hardware, and operating-system version all affect results. For multi-gigabyte logs or database dumps, a specialist large-file viewer may be more appropriate than either editor.
Editing, search, and replacement
Both editors provide tabs, syntax highlighting, folding, regular expressions, multi-file editing, encodings, line endings, themes, shortcuts, macros or automation, and column selection. Notepad++ exposes many of these controls directly, which makes a single-file change feel immediate. VS Code’s Explorer, command palette, search view, and workspace features become more valuable as files and tasks multiply. Repository-wide search
In VS Code, press Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows or Linux to search the opened folder. Regular expressions, case and whole-word options, search history, and include/exclude globs help target a repository. Notepad++ can be excellent for searching a selected directory and replacing text without opening a project.

Before a bulk replacement, inspect the scope. Ignored or hidden files, build output, vendor code, generated files, another encoding, or the wrong project root can all produce unwanted changes. Test on a copy or make a version-control checkpoint first.
Completion, navigation, and language intelligence
VS Code’s IntelliSense can provide completion, parameter information, quick information, definitions, references, symbol renaming, diagnostics, and refactoring. Quality depends on the language extension, language server, project configuration, installed SDK or runtime, and workspace settings. Install the relevant extension, open the project folder rather than only an individual file, and resolve runtime or language-server errors. Details are in the IntelliSense documentation.

Highlighting a keyword is not code validation, compilation, or type-aware navigation.
Debugging, testing, terminals, and tasks
VS Code supports an interactive debugger—breakpoints, stepping, variable inspection, call stacks, watch expressions, a debug console, launch configurations, and (where supported) process attachment. The exact experience comes from the language debugger and project setup; consult the debugging guide. Test discovery, linters, and formatters likewise depend on extensions and runtimes.
Its integrated terminal and task system can run builds, scripts, tests, linters, and formatters with project-specific configuration. See tasks documentation. Notepad++ can launch commands through plugins such as NppExec or external tools, but running a command is not the same as an integrated debugger or reproducible project workflow.

For actual software debugging and automation, VS Code is the clear choice.

VS Code’s source-control view shows changed files and diffs and supports common Git actions such as staging, committing, branch changes, and conflict resolution. Its source-control documentation explains the integrated workflow. Command-line Git or a dedicated client may still be preferable for advanced operations, and in that case Notepad++ remains a capable repository editor.
VS Code folders and workspaces provide project settings, multi-root projects, extension recommendations, debug configurations, tasks, search scope, settings synchronization, and workspace trust. Opening a single file is not the same as opening its project folder; tasks, diagnostics, and search can be limited until the correct folder is open. Notepad++ centers on files, tabs, sessions, and editor settings, which is simpler for ad hoc work but less reproducible for teams.
Extensions, plugins, and security
VS Code’s Marketplace includes language tools, debuggers, formatters, databases, containers, remote development, cloud services, notebooks, themes, and AI assistants. Extensions can consume CPU and memory, be abandoned, require an account or paid service, transmit telemetry, or create supply-chain risk. Install only what you need, review maintenance and permissions, and remove or disable extensions that cause slow startup or unexpected behavior. VS Code documents extension and enterprise controls in its editor guidance.
Notepad++ plugins are available through Plugin Admin and community resources. Capabilities and compatibility vary, especially between 32-bit and 64-bit builds; comparison is commonly added through a plugin rather than guaranteed in the bare editor. Use the official mechanism or a trusted project page, verify architecture compatibility, avoid random DLL downloads, and back up the plugin directory before changes. File comparison
VS Code includes comparison in its editor workflow. In a typical current release, use Explorer: right-click the first file, choose Select for Compare, then right-click the second and choose Compare with Selected. Labels can change, so check the current editing documentation. Git diffs and project context make VS Code the stronger choice when comparison is part of development.
Notepad++ can compare files after installing a suitable plugin. Check its name, architecture support, update status, and available options for your release. For either tool, consider whether you need side-by-side or inline changes, navigation, whitespace or case ignoring, three-way merge, editing during comparison, and large-file support.
Remote development
VS Code supports SSH, WSL, development containers, tunnels, and Codespaces through its remote-development ecosystem; see the remote overview. This is decisive when Windows is only the local interface for a Linux server, container, or cloud workspace. Notepad++ has no equivalent first-party integrated model. If you only edit local files, this advantage may not matter.

Both editors can expose encoding and line-ending choices, but treat them as data-integrity settings rather than cosmetic preferences. Check the status bar and encoding menu before saving files that use UTF-8 with or without BOM, legacy code pages, UTF-16, CRLF, or LF. An accidental conversion can damage old scripts, CSV files, localization resources, XML, or non-ASCII source. Use version control or a backup when changing encoding.

Very large files can cause slow highlighting, high memory use, delayed encoding detection, long searches, extension or plugin crashes, and an unresponsive interface. Disable unnecessary tooling or use a dedicated large-file utility when the file exceeds practical editor limits.

Privacy, telemetry, accounts, and licensing
Ordinary local editing in VS Code does not require a Microsoft account. Accounts become relevant for features such as settings synchronization, cloud environments, GitHub integration, or AI services. The official distribution, the open-source VS Code project, and third-party extensions can have different licensing and telemetry practices. Review the FAQ and telemetry guidance, and inspect extension privacy statements.
Notepad++ is generally local and self-contained, although a third-party plugin can add network behavior. Both core editors are free; optional cloud, AI, commercial extension, enterprise, infrastructure, or support costs are separate. Downloads are available from VS Code and Notepad++.
Which is easier for beginners?
Notepad++ is easier for basic editing: install it, open a file, search, change text, and save. There is little project terminology to learn.
VS Code has a steeper first day because folders, workspaces, extensions, runtimes, terminals, and trust settings are visible. That complexity pays off when learning a modern development workflow. A beginner writing a real multi-file program will usually outgrow Notepad++ sooner.
Which is better for programming?
For serious day-to-day programming, choose VS Code when you need completion, navigation, diagnostics, Git, testing, debugging, tasks, or a terminal. Choose Notepad++ when the “programming” task is actually a small script edit, configuration change, log inspection, or one-off file manipulation and you already run tools elsewhere. “Can a plugin launch this?” is not equivalent to an integrated, project-aware workflow.

Can you use both?
Yes. Keep Notepad++ as a fast “open, edit, save” utility and use VS Code for repositories, debugging, Git, terminals, and remote work. Separate file associations or use each application deliberately; remember that different installations, portable packages, plugins, and workspace settings can produce different behavior.
