The right fix depends on what you see: a missing or disabled effects button, an effect that will not apply, a custom image that will not upload, or a camera feed that looks wrong. Start by checking that Teams has a real camera feed, then check permissions, client support, and work-account policies. Virtual backgrounds are not available in every Teams environment.
Start with the symptom
| What happens | Try first |
|---|---|
| The background-effects button is missing or disabled | Turn on the camera and check whether your Teams client, device, or virtual desktop supports effects. For a work or school account, ask whether an administrator has disabled them. |
| There is no camera preview | Check the camera shutter, selected camera, operating-system or browser permissions, and whether another app is using the camera. |
| Only the background appears, or the person disappears | Select None to remove effects, then inspect the camera feed for a closed shutter, privacy screen, or incorrect camera source. |
| Built-in backgrounds work, but a custom image does not | Try a supported image format: .JPG, .PNG, or .BMP. |
| The effect applies but edges look rough | Improve lighting, reduce backlighting and motion, and move away from a busy background. This is usually a segmentation-quality issue, not a missing feature. |
| It works in the desktop app but not in a browser or virtual desktop | Check browser permissions and client limitations; web and desktop features are not identical, and optimized VDI does not support background effects. |
For most Windows and Mac users, follow this order: confirm the camera preview, enable camera access, close competing camera or virtual-camera apps, restart and update Teams, and then test the background again.
Turn on a background the right way
Teams labels and menu locations can vary by client version, account, and feature rollout. Look for Effects and avatars, Video effects and settings, or Background effects.
Before joining
- Open the meeting and select Join.
- Turn on your camera in the pre-join screen.
- Select Effects and avatars.
- Choose Blur, a built-in background, or More video effects > Add new for an image.
- Preview the choice, then join.
During a meeting
- Turn on your camera.
- Select More actions (…) > Video effects and settings.
- Open Video effects, select an effect, and choose Preview or Apply if shown.
The camera may briefly turn off while a new background is selected. Microsoft says background settings persist into later meetings and calls until you change them. See Microsoft’s steps for changing a Teams background.

If the effects button is missing or grayed out
First turn on the camera. In some Teams views, effects are unavailable until the camera is enabled. Then check the following in order:
- Confirm the camera is available. Check that Teams can show a live preview and that the intended webcam is selected.
- Check where Teams is running. Microsoft documents background effects as unavailable for Linux users and for Teams used through optimized virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). A local desktop fix will not remove those limitations.
- Consider web-client differences. Microsoft lists background blur and default backgrounds as supported on Teams for the web, but some video effects are desktop-only. If an effect is absent in a browser, that does not by itself mean the webcam is broken. See the Teams desktop and web feature comparison.
- Check organization controls. In work or school Teams, an administrator can control whether participants can use video effects. If local camera access is working but the control is missing or disabled—especially for multiple people in the same organization—ask IT to review the meeting policy. Microsoft documents the video-effects policy setting.
Feature availability and labels can differ between accounts and client versions. Do not assume that a missing button proves the camera is faulty.

Check whether the camera feed itself works
Background replacement processes your video; it cannot repair a blocked or incorrect camera feed. Test the camera in Teams’ preview and in your operating system’s camera app. If the system camera app also fails, solve the camera problem before troubleshooting effects.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Open the physical camera shutter or disable the device’s privacy key or privacy mode.
- Confirm the correct built-in or external camera is selected and that an external webcam is connected.
- Close other apps that may be using the camera, such as video-call software or camera utilities.
- If Teams is set to a virtual camera, switch to the physical webcam for a test. Apps such as OBS or other virtual-camera tools can change the feed Teams receives. Close the virtual-camera app, restart Teams, and test again.
- Reconnect an external camera and restart the device if needed.
If Teams shows only the selected background, or shows blur without the person, select None and inspect the unprocessed image. A closed shutter, covered lens, or privacy screen may be feeding Teams an image that the effect then obscures. Microsoft covers this symptom in its Teams Free camera troubleshooting guide; the underlying camera checks are useful even if your account is managed by an organization.

Allow camera access in Windows
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera, which is important for desktop applications such as Teams and browsers.
- Close and reopen Teams, then test the preview and background effect.
The exact app entries shown can vary by Teams packaging and Windows version; not every installation displays a separate Microsoft Teams toggle. If a permission is unavailable or locked, device policy may be controlling it. Microsoft’s Windows camera guidance explains these privacy controls.
Allow camera access in macOS
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
- Enable Microsoft Teams.
- Quit and reopen Teams, then test the camera and effect again.
If you use Teams in a browser, grant camera access to the browser as well as allowing the Teams website in the browser’s own site settings. A corporate device-management setting may prevent you from changing permissions. Microsoft documents the Mac camera permission path in its Teams camera troubleshooting guidance.

Fix camera access in Teams on the web
Teams in a browser needs permission at two levels: the operating system must permit the browser to use the camera, and the browser must permit the Teams site. Microsoft lists Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox as supported browsers for Teams on the web, but browser support does not guarantee that every effect matches the desktop app.

- Set camera access for the Teams site to Allow, and choose the correct camera if the browser offers a device selector.
- Refresh the Teams tab. If needed, close and reopen the browser.
- If access remains blocked, check the browser’s camera privacy settings. For example: Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions > Camera; Edge: Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Camera; Safari: Settings > Websites > Camera; Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Camera > Settings.
Also confirm the operating system grants camera access to the browser. Microsoft’s web device troubleshooting guide has browser-specific guidance.

If a custom background will not upload or apply
- Try a built-in Teams background first. If it works, the problem is more likely to be the image file than the camera or effects feature.
- Use a
.JPG,.PNG, or.BMPimage; these are the formats Microsoft documents for custom backgrounds. - If the file still fails, try another image. As practical troubleshooting steps—not additional Microsoft format requirements—copy it to a local folder, use a simple filename with letters and numbers, and try a smaller, standard-color image.
- Restart Teams and retry the upload.
Uploading a personal background is not the same as deploying branded backgrounds for an organization. Teams Premium and policy requirements can apply to organization-managed custom meeting backgrounds, but Teams Premium is not a general fix for a missing camera, unavailable effects, or a failed personal effect. See Microsoft’s custom meeting background documentation.
Check Linux, VDI, mobile, and work-account limits
- Linux: Microsoft says background effects are unavailable for Linux users.
- Optimized VDI: Microsoft says background effects are not available when Teams is used through optimized VDI. Ask your organization’s IT team whether your remote-desktop configuration supports the feature; local reinstalling may not help.
- Android: Microsoft’s currently documented requirements are Teams mobile version
1416/1.0.0.2021143402or later, Android 10 or later, and a Qualcomm Adreno 610 or later, Arm Mali-G71 or later, or Arm Mali-T720 or later GPU. These are Android-specific requirements, not requirements for Windows, Mac, or iPhone. - Work or school account: Your organization can manage video effects and camera access. Ask the administrator if the issue is limited to managed meetings, a managed device, or multiple users.
- Teams Free: Personal accounts do not have the same tenant-policy troubleshooting path. Check device and app permissions first; organization-specific policy escalation applies to work or school accounts.
Microsoft’s background-effects documentation describes the Linux, VDI, and Android limitations. Requirements and availability may change as Teams is updated.
Restart and update Teams before reinstalling
- Leave the meeting and quit Teams completely, then reopen it.
- Install available Teams and operating-system updates.
- Restart the computer and test the camera in its system camera app before opening Teams again.
- Close any other camera or virtual-camera applications and retry.
- If the issue persists, use Microsoft’s current instructions for clearing the Teams cache for your specific client and operating system, or reinstall Teams after checking hardware and permissions.
Cache locations and reset procedures differ between Teams clients and operating systems, so avoid deleting a guessed cache folder. Reinstalling is an escalation step, not a guaranteed fix. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting steps also recommend closing other apps using the camera and keeping Teams and the operating system updated.

Contact your Teams administrator if the effects control is missing or disabled after camera permissions are correct, if multiple coworkers have the same issue, if the device is managed, or if you are using VDI. Ask them to check video-effects policy and any applicable device or meeting restrictions.
When requesting help, include your Teams version and platform, whether you use Teams Free or a work/school account, whether you are on desktop, web, mobile, or VDI, your camera model, and whether the operating-system camera app works. Describe the exact symptom and say whether built-in backgrounds and custom uploads fail in the same way. Include any error message or screenshot and the steps you already tried. Microsoft recommends giving support a clear description and relevant screenshots or logs when available.
