Update, November 22, 2024: Virgin Plus restored Canada/U.S. calling on its offer, while Fido made its $39/60GB plan available online after initially requiring customers to call or visit a store.
Virgin Plus, Koodo and Fido all moved toward a headline price of $39 per month for 60GB of 4G data during Black Friday 2024. However, the plans were not identical: Virgin’s price was tied to bringing your own phone, Koodo’s depended on a $5 monthly autopay discount, and Fido’s depended on a $10 autopay discount and was initially restricted to new activations.
These were November 2024 promotions, not confirmed current plans. Check the carriers’ live terms before signing up: Virgin Plus, Koodo and Fido.

Was each plan really $39?
Not in the same sense. Virgin Plus presented $39 as the monthly BYOP price. Koodo’s standard price was reported as $44, falling to an effective $39 only when the customer received the $5 monthly autopay discount. Fido’s standard price was reported as $49, with a $10 autopay discount bringing it to $39.
That distinction matters over a year. The effective price assumes the discount remains available and that autopay stays active. A customer who cancels autopay could lose the discount, depending on the applicable terms. Taxes, optional add-ons, activation charges and device payments were separate from the advertised plan price.
None of these headline figures should be treated as a device-inclusive price. Virgin’s reported $39 offer was for BYOP customers; the coverage described a device-related price of $49 per month after a $5 credit. Anyone financing a phone needed to compare the complete monthly bill rather than the BYOP figure.

Virgin Plus’s offer was reported at $39 per month for customers bringing their own phone. It included:
- 60GB of 4G data;
- unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting;
- international texting from Canada;
- call display; and
- voicemail.
The reported 4G speed cap was up to 150Mbps. That is a maximum or plan limit, not a guaranteed everyday speed. Actual performance can vary with location, signal strength, congestion, device capability and network management.

The calling details changed during the promotion. The initial version reportedly did not include Canada/U.S. calling. Virgin Plus restored that feature in its November 22 update, so the updated version—not the first published description—is the relevant historical offer.
On the reported terms, Virgin was the simplest choice for someone who wanted a $39 BYOP price without the same autopay-discount explanation attached to Koodo and Fido. The source does not establish whether the offer was available to every existing customer, whether it required a port-in, or whether the price was permanent.
Koodo: $39 after autopay, with a selectable perk
Koodo’s reported plan started at $44 per month and became $39 with a $5 monthly autopay discount. It included:
- 60GB of 4G data;
- unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting;
- call display and voicemail; and
- one free selectable perk.
Examples of the available perk choices included unlimited international texting or rollover data. The international-texting option was described as a selectable perk, not as a universal default feature that every customer automatically received.
Koodo’s reported speed cap was up to 100Mbps—50Mbps lower than the caps reported for Virgin Plus and Fido. That does not prove Koodo would be slower in every real-world situation, but it is a meaningful difference in the plan specifications.

The practical trade-off was straightforward: Koodo offered more flexibility for customers who valued rollover data or international texting, but its $39 figure depended on autopay. Customers comparing bills should record both the $44 base price and the discounted $39 price.

Fido: the same headline price, but more signup friction
Fido’s reported $39 price came from a $49 plan reduced by a $10 monthly autopay discount. The promotion offered 60GB of 4G data, and Fido’s 4G plans were reported as capped at up to 150Mbps.
At first, the offer did not appear in Fido’s normal online plan flow. Customers were directed to call the displayed number or visit a store, and the promotion was reported as limited to new activations. A phone or in-store signup could expose the customer to a $70 connection fee. On November 22, Fido made the $39/60GB offer available online.
The exact feature list for the unlisted $39 Fido plan was initially unclear. Fido’s usual plan benefits were expected to include features such as unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, call display and voicemail, but those details should not be treated as definitively confirmed for this specific historical offer without the original plan terms.
That uncertainty made Fido harder to compare from the headline alone. A customer needed to confirm the plan’s calling, texting, voicemail, international-use and eligibility details at checkout, along with whether the connection fee applied.

Which plan was the better fit?
- For the clearest reported monthly price: Virgin Plus was the most straightforward because its $39 figure was presented as a BYOP price rather than an autopay-adjusted price.
- For rollover data or international texting: Koodo stood out because customers could choose one free perk, subject to the available options.
- For someone already committed to Fido: Fido could make sense if the exact features were confirmed and the activation was completed online without an unexpected connection fee.
- For customers avoiding autopay: Virgin Plus appeared less restrictive in the reported comparison. Koodo and Fido’s $39 figures relied on autopay discounts.
- For anyone buying a phone: None of the offers should be judged by the BYOP headline alone. Add the device financing payment and check whether the plan price changes.
- For an existing subscriber: Do not assume the promotion could be added through a plan change, upgrade or migration. Fido’s offer was specifically reported as being for new activations, while eligibility for existing customers was not fully established for all three brands.
How strong was the Black Friday deal?
The move brought the reported price of 60GB down from roughly $44 to $39 at these brands, which was an improvement over the immediate pricing. But it was not necessarily the most aggressive Black Friday benchmark: the previous year had seen a reported offer of about $34 for 50GB.
The comparison is historical rather than a direct measure of value. The 2024 plans offered 10GB more data, while the final cost and features depended on autopay, BYOP status, activation eligibility and other terms. A lower monthly price from the previous year does not automatically make the newer plans worse for every customer.
What to check before accepting a similar offer
- Separate base and discounted prices. Write down the regular monthly rate and the amount saved through autopay.
- Confirm the discount’s conditions. Ask what happens if autopay is cancelled, a payment fails or the account changes.
- Check activation eligibility. Confirm whether the offer is for a new activation, a port-in, BYOP only, or an existing-customer plan change.
- Calculate the first-year total. Include 12 months of plan charges, device payments, taxes, add-ons and any connection or activation fee.
- Verify calling and texting features. Equal data allowances do not mean equal Canada/U.S. calling, international texting, rollover data or roaming benefits.
- Read the speed language correctly. A 100Mbps or 150Mbps cap is not a guaranteed real-world speed.
- Check the date. Black Friday promotions can disappear or change after the event.
Availability in 2026
The offers described here were reported on November 21 and updated on November 22, 2024. The available evidence does not show that the $39/60GB plans remained available in 2026. Do not use this historical article as confirmation of a current price; verify live plans and terms directly with the carrier before starting an activation.
