Virgin Galactic completed Galactic 07 on June 8, 2024, carrying six people on a successful suborbital flight from Spaceport America in New Mexico. The air-launched mission reached about 87.5 kilometers (54.4 miles) and ended with VSS Unity’s final commercial flight before the company shifted its focus to Delta-class spacecraft.

How the air-launched flight worked
Galactic 07 did not begin with a rocket lifting vertically from a launch pad. VMS Eve took off from a runway carrying VSS Unity beneath it. At roughly 44,562 feet (13,582 meters), Eve released Unity; the spaceplane then ignited its rocket motor for the powered climb. After the brief microgravity portion of the suborbital flight, Unity re-entered the atmosphere, glided back and landed at Spaceport America. Space.com reported the release altitude and flight profile; Virgin Galactic reported the mission’s successful completion.
The reported peak altitude was below the 100-kilometer Kármán line often used internationally as a boundary of space. The United States uses a 50-mile threshold in some commercial astronautics contexts, and Galactic 07’s reported altitude was above that mark. Because definitions differ, the most precise description is a suborbital spaceflight at about 87.5 kilometers—not an orbital flight or a trip around Earth.
Who flew on Galactic 07?
The six people launched were divided between the spaceplane and its carrier aircraft. The two Eve pilots were part of the overall flight but were not among Unity’s four occupants.

Virgin Galactic’s preflight announcement identifies the planned roles, while Space.com’s postflight account reports the people who flew. The terms “research astronaut,” “private astronaut” and “spaceflight participant” are not interchangeable job titles; here they distinguish Atasever’s research role from the other Unity passengers’ private-flight roles.
Research alongside private passengers
Galactic 07 combined private passengers with research activity. Atasever conducted human-tended experiments associated with Axiom Space. Separately, autonomous rack-mounted payloads included a Purdue University experiment on how propellant sloshes in tanks used by maneuvering spacecraft and a University of California, Berkeley experiment testing a form of 3D printing in microgravity. NASA’s Flight Opportunities program supported the autonomous payloads, according to Virgin Galactic’s mission announcement.

These were different kinds of research: Atasever tended experiments as a person aboard Unity, while the Purdue and Berkeley payloads operated autonomously. Virgin Galactic provided the flight platform; the available mission information describes the experiments’ aims, not detailed scientific results, so the flight itself should not be treated as proof that either payload achieved a particular research outcome.

The safety issue before the flight
Virgin Galactic’s preflight account addressed a problem from the preceding mission, Galactic 06, on January 26, 2024—not a reported failure on Galactic 07. After Unity’s release during Galactic 06, an alignment pin detached from VMS Eve. Virgin Galactic said it notified the Federal Aviation Administration, investigated the event, and that the FAA accepted its final investigation report and corrective actions before Galactic 07. Those actions included improving the pin’s retention mechanism and adding a secondary retention mechanism.

Why Galactic 07 ended Unity’s commercial service
Virgin Galactic described Galactic 07 as VSS Unity’s final commercial flight. The company then redirected its effort toward developing and producing Delta-class spacecraft, saying Unity’s flight experience and operating data would inform the next vehicles. The transition was strategic: Unity completed this commercial mission successfully, but Virgin Galactic was pursuing a different spacecraft program intended to support more frequent operations.
The company later reported that Galactic 07’s blended research-and-private-astronaut manifest generated average revenue of approximately $900,000 per seat. That is Virgin Galactic’s reported revenue metric for the manifest, not a confirmed amount paid by each passenger or a current ticket price. What happened after Unity’s commercial flights?
“Final commercial flight” did not mean Unity would never fly again. On May 27, 2026, Virgin Galactic said the vehicle had returned to the skies for glide flights intended to support pilot training and operational readiness for the next spacecraft program. In that announcement, the company targeted glide tests of its first new spacecraft in Q3 2026, rocket-powered test flights in Q4 2026, and commercial operations in Q4 2026. Those were company targets, not completed milestones. The update is at Virgin Galactic’s May 2026 announcement.
