For most Edge users, start with the built-in Screenshot tool. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, drag around the video, and copy or save the result. Edge keeps moving content such as video, GIFs, and carousels active while you select an area, so you can capture the moment you want without installing an extension. If you need recording, annotations, full-page capture, or a repeatable developer workflow, evaluate an extension carefully and check its permissions and compatibility first.
Use Edge Screenshot before installing anything
Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature is the simplest way to grab a frame from a playing video. It captures a selected area of the page while moving content remains active. That is useful when pausing the video would change the scene or when you want to select a precise moment.
Open the capture tool
- Open the video in Edge and seek to the moment you want.
- Open Screenshot with Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or open Edge’s Settings and find the Screenshot command.
- Drag a rectangle around the video image. Include only the player area if you want to avoid the page title, comments, or surrounding controls.
- Use the markup controls if you need to draw, highlight, or annotate.
- Choose Copy to place the image on the clipboard, or Save to write it to a file.
Because the tool captures a screen region rather than extracting the video’s underlying file, the result reflects what is visible in the browser: scaling, overlays, subtitles, letterboxing, and any controls that happen to be displayed.
Getting a cleaner frame
- Move the pointer away from the player and wait for controls to fade before selecting the region.
- Use the video’s full-screen button when the player itself is small, then make a tighter selection.
- Set the browser zoom to 100% before capture if you need predictable dimensions. A zoomed page changes the number of CSS pixels in the selected area.
- For subtitles, select after the subtitle appears; for a clean image, wait until it disappears.
- If an overlay blocks the scene, look for the player’s own controls to disable captions, watermarks, or annotations. Edge Screenshot cannot remove pixels that are already displayed.
When an Edge extension is worth trying
An extension can be useful when you need more than a one-off selection: repeated captures, visible-area and full-page screenshots, screen recording, annotation, image or PDF export, or a workflow that places files in a particular format. Microsoft documents that Edge accepts extensions from its own Add-ons store and that extensions designed for Google Chrome can also be used in Edge.

Do not assume that a general screenshot extension extracts an untouched, native-resolution video frame. Store descriptions for products such as CocoShot and Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot advertise broad screenshot and recording functions, but those descriptions do not establish behavior on every video host, embedded player, or protected stream. Availability can also change; one retrieved CocoShot listing showed an incompatibility message even though it displayed a recent version date.
Install from Microsoft Edge Add-ons
- Select the Extensions icon in Edge’s toolbar.
- Choose Get Extensions for Microsoft Edge.
- Search for the extension and open its listing.
- Select Get.
- Read the permission prompt before selecting Add extension.
Install from the Chrome Web Store
- Open the extension’s product page in Edge.
- Select Get.
- If Edge asks, allow extensions from other stores.
- Review the requested permissions, then confirm the installation.
Remove an extension from the Extensions menu or manage it in edge://extensions. Turn off extensions you are not actively using, especially those with access to data on all websites.
How to evaluate a video screenshot extension

| Does it annotate or record? | Distinguish still-image markup from screen recording; they are separate capabilities. |
| What permissions are requested? | Prefer the least access needed. Treat “read and change data on all websites” as a significant trust decision. |
| Is it compatible? | Check the live Edge listing, your Edge version, operating system, and the particular video player. |
Why a capture may include controls or look soft
Player controls are visible
Controls are part of the rendered page. Move the pointer away, wait for the fade-out, and capture only the video rectangle. If the controls never disappear, try the player’s full-screen mode or its own screenshot option.

The frame is lower resolution than expected
A browser screenshot records displayed pixels, not necessarily the source video’s resolution. Enlarge the player, use full-screen mode, and avoid browser zoom levels that shrink the video. A retina or high-density display can produce different pixel dimensions from another computer.
The extension cannot access the video
Some players render inside cross-origin frames, canvas elements, or protected playback paths. An extension may be unable to select the underlying video even when it can capture ordinary page content. Try Edge Screenshot first; if that also fails, the site or playback technology may be restricting capture.
The image is black or blank
Protected playback, GPU compositing, a blocked permission, or a player-specific limitation can produce a blank result. Confirm that the video is visible in Edge, test a non-protected page, and review the extension’s permissions. Do not attempt to bypass digital-rights protections.

- Shortcut does nothing: open Edge’s Settings and locate Screenshot, or use the right-click menu. Another application may be intercepting the shortcut.
- Selection is the wrong size: reset zoom to 100%, maximize the player, and drag from outside the controls.
- Extension is missing: check the live store listing and your Edge version; store availability and compatibility change.
- Install is blocked: your organization may restrict extensions. Ask an administrator rather than installing an unapproved copy.
- Capture includes a banner: dismiss the banner or use a tool that can hide a selector. Edge Screenshot itself captures what is visible.
- API request fails: verify the access key, URL encoding, HTTPS address, timeout, and response headers. Treat a bot check, blank page, timeout, or failed load as a page result rather than a successful clean shot.
