Yes, Verizon has a real iPhone 16 “on us” promotion—but the clearest public version is not a free phone for one person. It is built around four 128GB iPhone 16 devices, four new smartphone lines, Unlimited Welcome, and 36 months of promotional bill credits. The phones can reach a $0 net device balance, but service, taxes, fees, and other charges still apply.
Verizon promotions can vary by account, location, inventory, and checkout session. The details below reflect the public offer found on August 18, 2026; verify the final terms in your cart before ordering.

How the “free” iPhone math works
Verizon lists the 128GB iPhone 16 at $729.99. On a 36-month device agreement, that is approximately $20.27 per month. Verizon then applies a matching promotional credit each month:

The service is separate. Four lines at $25 each cost $100 per month before taxes and fees, or $3,600 over 36 months. That figure does not include device taxes, optional insurance, AppleCare+, accessories, or other account charges. In other words, the promotion subsidizes the phones; it does not make Verizon service free.

The identified four-phone offer does not list a trade-in requirement. However, Verizon runs multiple iPhone promotions at the same time. Some account-specific, upgrade, or newer-phone offers may require a trade-in or a different plan. What you still pay
- Wireless service: $100 per month for four lines before taxes and fees at the advertised rate.
- Taxes and regulatory fees: Not included in the $25-per-line price.
- Device taxes: Depending on the transaction and location, these may be due at purchase or appear on the bill.
- Activation: Verizon shows a $40 one-time activation fee per device, alongside an online-only waiver for a new line. Confirm the waiver in the cart.
- Optional services: Insurance, AppleCare+, accessories, and other add-ons cost extra.
What happens if you cancel or change plans?
The credits are conditional. If you cancel a qualifying line, move it to an ineligible plan, lose the required Auto Pay setup, or otherwise stop meeting the promotion’s terms, future credits can end. The remaining device balance may then become payable. If one of four lines is canceled, check the specific agreement to see how that affects the associated phone and any other promotional credits.

Paying the phone off early does not necessarily make all future credits arrive immediately. Verizon says the promotion’s terms control whether credits continue after a full-price payoff or other changes. Read the device-payment agreement rather than assuming that early payoff preserves or accelerates the subsidy.
Credits may also take one or two billing cycles to appear. A first bill showing the regular device installment is therefore not automatically proof that the promotion failed. Check subsequent bills and contact Verizon if the promised credit still does not appear after the stated window.

Is this a good deal?
It can make sense for a four-line household
This is strongest for a family or group that genuinely needs four new Verizon lines, wants the base 128GB iPhone 16, can use the qualifying Auto Pay method, and expects to stay with Verizon for all 36 months. In that situation, the device credits can reduce the cost of four phones without requiring a trade-in.

If you need only one phone, the four-line structure changes the calculation completely. Compare the cost of Verizon’s required service with your current plan, a Verizon account-specific upgrade, another carrier, or a direct purchase. The relevant comparison is not “$0 phone versus $729.99 phone”; it is the total wireless cost over the period you expect to remain with the carrier.

Consider newer models
By August 2026, the iPhone 16 is an older generation, while Verizon’s broader deals page emphasizes newer iPhone models, including iPhone 17-family offers. If you want the latest processor, camera hardware, or a longer product cycle, compare the current newer-model promotion before choosing the older phone.
The explicit terms identify the 128GB iPhone 16. Do not assume that the same maximum credit makes an iPhone 16 Plus, Pro, Pro Max, or larger-storage configuration free. A more expensive model may require an additional payment.
How to verify the offer before ordering
- Open Verizon’s iPhone 16 page and select the 128GB model.
- Confirm that the displayed promotion includes four new iPhones and four new smartphone lines.
- Confirm that the plan is Unlimited Welcome.
- Check that the advertised service price is $25 per line with Auto Pay, not $25 for all four lines.
- Verify the approximately $20.27 device installment and matching 36-month credit for each phone.
- Check whether trade-in is optional or required in your specific cart.
- Confirm Auto Pay, paper-free billing, taxes, device taxes, and activation-fee treatment.
- Read the cancellation, plan-change, payoff, and credit-termination terms.
- Save screenshots or a PDF showing the model, storage, plan, line count, monthly price, credit amount, and credit duration.
- Check the first two billing cycles for the promotional credits.
Verizon says promotions can change, disappear while supplies last, or differ for signed-in customers. An offer visible in an advertisement is not a guarantee that the same terms will remain available at checkout.

Alternatives to consider
- Existing Verizon offer: Sign in to My Verizon and compare any personalized upgrade or trade-in promotion with the four-new-line offer.
- Direct Apple purchase: Buying from Apple may suit buyers who do not need four Verizon lines or who value more carrier flexibility.
- Newer Verizon promotion: Compare the total price of an iPhone 17-family offer rather than choosing the iPhone 16 solely because the device line says “free.”
- Other carriers: Compare the complete monthly service cost, taxes, credit period, and early-switch consequences—not just the advertised phone price.
