If Vehicle Motion Cues are missing, set them to On first: Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Vehicle Motion Cues → On. Test while safely riding as a passenger in a moving vehicle. If the dots appear, the feature works and Automatic detection is the likely issue; if they do not, try the recovery steps below.
Vehicle Motion Cues arrived with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Apple’s current guides may use slightly different labels or offer more appearance options than the original iOS 18 interface.
What Vehicle Motion Cues do
Vehicle Motion Cues are animated dots displayed near the edges of the screen. They move in response to detected vehicle motion, providing visual motion information while you read or watch content. They are a system accessibility feature, not an effect belonging to a particular app, so they can appear over different apps. Apple says they may help reduce motion sickness for passengers in cars and other on-road vehicles, and work best when you face forward. They are not a treatment that works for everyone.

Turn the feature on
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility → Motion → Vehicle Motion Cues. Some iOS 18 screens or instructions may say Show Vehicle Motion Cues.
- Choose On for a direct test, or Automatic for cues that appear when the phone detects vehicle travel.
Apple’s current iPhone guide lists Off, On, and Automatic. In Automatic, the cues appear when iPhone detects travel in a car or other on-road vehicle and are hidden when motion stops. That makes Automatic conditional, not a setting that keeps dots on all the time. See Apple’s iPhone instructions.
On iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility → Motion → Vehicle Motion Cues.
- Turn the feature on.
Apple also documents a Control Center control for showing or hiding the cues on iPad. See Apple’s iPad guide.
The fastest diagnostic: test On, not Automatic
- As a passenger, wait until the vehicle is moving normally on the road. Do not test while parked.
- Set Vehicle Motion Cues to On in Settings.
- Wait several seconds and look near the display edges.
- Dots appear on On, but not Automatic: The feature itself is producing cues; automatic vehicle detection or the conditions of the test are the more likely issue. Return to Automatic and try again in a conventional forward-facing passenger position. If detection remains unreliable, use On when you want the cues, then turn it off afterward.
- Dots appear but are hard to notice: Check appearance options, if available on your software version.
- No dots appear on On: Continue with the restart, update, Control Center, and settings checks below.
- Dots appear while parked: Check whether the mode is set to On rather than Automatic; On is not limited to vehicle travel.
This comparison is a practical troubleshooting test, not an Apple-confirmed diagnosis of a particular bug. Automatic depends on detection, and a stationary test cannot establish that it is broken.

If Automatic mode is the problem
After confirming that On displays the dots, return to Automatic and test as a passenger during ordinary road travel. Face forward if possible. A parked device, walking, a stationary train, or very slight or intermittent movement may not give Automatic the conditions it needs to recognize vehicle travel. Apple does not promise an instant or identical response to every turn, acceleration, brake, or road vibration.
If the feature continues to work on On but not in Automatic, On is a reasonable workaround. Do not assume CarPlay, GPS, Bluetooth, cellular service, or a particular vehicle connection is required; the cited Apple documentation does not specify those as prerequisites.
If the dots are too subtle to see
On newer software, look under Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Vehicle Motion Cues → Customize Appearance. Apple’s current guide lists controls for Pattern (Regular or Dynamic), Color, and Visibility (including Larger Dots or More Dots). Choose a contrasting color or larger, more visible dots if the controls are available. Apple says color saturation adjusts automatically to preserve contrast with content behind a dot.

These controls reflect current documentation and may not all be present in the original iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 release. Options also involve a trade-off: larger or more numerous dots may be easier to see but more distracting, while a Regular pattern may feel less conspicuous than Dynamic. Apple documents the current appearance options.

Vehicle Motion Cues can be shown or hidden from a dedicated Control Center control. If you enabled the feature in Settings but do not see the dots, it is possible they were hidden there. Open Control Center and look for Vehicle Motion Cues. If the control is missing, use Control Center’s customization option to add it, then use it to show or hide the cues.
Control Center editing and labels vary across iOS and iPadOS releases, so follow the controls on your device rather than relying on a screenshot from another version. Apple’s guides cover the dedicated control for iPhone and iPad.

More fixes, from simplest to most disruptive
- Toggle the setting. Choose Off, then On, and test again. If you normally use Automatic, switch to On temporarily to compare.
- Restart the device. Then check the setting and repeat the On test.
- Install an available update. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install a compatible iOS or iPadOS update if one is offered. Menu names and behavior can change between releases.
- Refresh the Control Center control. Remove Vehicle Motion Cues from Control Center and add it again if the control appears out of sync with Settings.
- Check Reduce Motion as a diagnostic only. Reduce Motion and Vehicle Motion Cues both appear in Motion settings, but Apple’s reviewed documentation does not say that Reduce Motion disables Vehicle Motion Cues. Temporarily turn Reduce Motion off, test, then restore your preferred setting if there is no change.
- Consider Reset All Settings only as a last software step. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad → Reset → Reset All Settings. This is not a guaranteed fix. It resets system preferences and can undo Wi-Fi, privacy, keyboard, accessibility, and other custom settings. It is not intended to erase personal data, but consider the inconvenience before proceeding.
If you have other motion or accessibility features enabled, note your preferred settings before resetting. If the problem remains, contact Apple Support rather than moving straight to an erase or factory reset.

Open Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Vehicle Motion Cues and select Off, or hide them with the Vehicle Motion Cues control in Control Center. If you want them only during travel, select Automatic instead of On. Automatic is designed to hide cues when motion stops, but detection may not change state immediately. Toggle the setting off and back on, then restart if the dots repeatedly remain after leaving the vehicle.

If Vehicle Motion Cues is missing
- Motion is present, but Vehicle Motion Cues is not: Check Settings → General → About for your software version, then visit Settings → General → Software Update and install an available compatible update. Restart and check again. Device model, region, beta software, or a managed-device configuration may affect what is available. Apple cautions that some iOS 18 features are not available on every device or in every region; the documentation cited here does not provide a definitive model-by-model compatibility list. - Motion itself is missing: This points to a broader software, device, or configuration question, not just Vehicle Motion Cues. Confirm your device model and installed operating system before troubleshooting further.
Vehicle Motion Cues was introduced with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, but current Apple guide pages may describe later releases. Do not assume every device running iOS 18 supports every feature, or that every later appearance control exists in the original iOS 18 interface. Apple’s iPadOS 18 overview lists the feature.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple if the setting is present but On never displays cues after a restart and update, if the Motion settings page crashes or will not save changes, or if other accessibility and motion features are also malfunctioning. The same applies if you are seeing broader display or repeated system-level problems. A failure to show cues by itself does not prove the display is damaged: the dots are a system accessibility overlay, and Automatic mode can simply be waiting for the right conditions.
Apple’s current Motion guide also notes that enabling Vehicle Motion Cues limits ProMotion displays to a maximum of 60 fps. Treat that as a current-guide detail, not a verified description of every original iOS 18 build. Read Apple’s Motion settings guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Vehicle Motion Cues require CarPlay, GPS, Bluetooth, or cellular service?
Apple’s cited documentation does not specify any of these as prerequisites. Do not treat a missing connection as the first explanation for missing cues.
