/usr/share stores system-installed, generally read-only data that is not specific to a processor architecture. It commonly contains man pages, documentation, locale and timezone data, fonts, icons, desktop metadata, schemas, and application resources—not user files, host configuration, compiled libraries, or runtime state.
What “architecture-independent” means
Architecture-independent data is content that does not inherently depend on the CPU architecture or binary ABI. The same man page, icon, font, template, or text database can often be used on compatible x86-64 and ARM installations of the same operating system and software release.
That does not mean every file in /usr/share is portable everywhere. Data can still depend on a particular Linux distribution, operating-system release, package version, interpreter, application, schema format, or desktop environment. The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) describes the sharing model, but it is a convention and compatibility target—not a kernel-enforced rule.

/usr/binand/usr/sbinnormally contain executable programs./usr/libcontains libraries, plugins, and package data that may be architecture-dependent or mixed with architecture-dependent files./usr/sharecontains static data that is generally independent of CPU architecture.
This separation historically allowed a read-only /usr tree to be shared by compatible machines, including machines with different processor architectures. Modern systems more often use local filesystems, containers, immutable images, or merged-/usr layouts, but the conceptual distinction remains useful. See the FHS descriptions of the /usr hierarchy and /usr/share.

The FHS requires or permits basic locations such as /usr/share/man and /usr/share/misc, while many other directories are created by distributions, desktop environments, language runtimes, and individual applications. A directory’s presence does not prove that it is mandated by the FHS.
What does not belong in /usr/share?
Compiled programs and native libraries
Compiled executables and native shared libraries are normally placed in architecture-appropriate locations such as /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /usr/lib, /usr/lib64, or a multiarch directory such as /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. A file that happens to be text or executable on multiple CPUs is not automatically appropriate for /usr/share; its role in the application and the distribution’s packaging policy also matter.

Configuration
Host-specific system configuration belongs under /etc. A package may install example configuration or static defaults under /usr/share, but active configuration that administrators edit should use the application’s documented configuration path.
Persistent state, logs, caches, and runtime files
Changing application data belongs elsewhere:
/var/lib/<application>— persistent databases and service state/var/log/<application>— logs/var/cache/<application>— reconstructible caches/run— volatile runtime state such as sockets and PID files
Even game data illustrates the distinction: static game assets may use /usr/share/games, while scores and gameplay logs belong under /var/games, as described by the FHS.
/usr/share versus similar directories
| Location | Purpose |
|---|---|
/usr/share |
Distribution- or system-managed static, architecture-independent data |
/usr/lib |
Libraries and package data, including architecture-dependent or mixed-content material |
/usr/local/share |
Static data for software installed locally by an administrator, outside the distribution-managed /usr tree |
/etc |
Host-specific system configuration |
/var/lib |
Persistent, changing application and service state |
/var/cache |
Reconstructible cached data |
/run |
Volatile state created during system operation |
$HOME/.local/share |
Per-user application data; this is the default when $XDG_DATA_HOME is unset |
/usr/share and /usr/local/share contain similar types of static data, but their ownership and lifecycle differ. The former is normally managed by the operating system’s package system; the latter is the administrator’s area for manually installed software. The Debian Handbook explains this distinction in practical terms.

Generally, no. Treat /usr/share as installed system data that is usually package-managed. Manual changes can break an application, remove documentation, invalidate desktop or MIME databases, cause package-integrity warnings, or be overwritten by a later update.
Do not delete a directory merely because its name looks unnecessary. Documentation, language packs, fonts, dictionaries, icon themes, and development resources may be removable, but other installed packages can depend on them. Remove unwanted content through the package manager or the software’s supported uninstall process. For customization, prefer /etc, /usr/local/share, or $HOME/.local/share, depending on whether the change is system-wide, administrator-installed, or per-user.
Inspecting /usr/share safely
List contents and measure space
ls -la /usr/share
du -sh /usr/share
du -xhd1 /usr/share | sort -h
The -x option keeps the disk-usage scan on the same filesystem, avoiding an accidental traversal into another mounted filesystem.
Examine an unfamiliar file
file /usr/share/path/to/file
ls -l /usr/share/path/to/file
stat /usr/share/path/to/file
Search by name with:
find /usr/share -type f -name 'filename'
find /usr/share -type f -iname '*keyword*'
Find package ownership
On Debian and Ubuntu:
dpkg -S /usr/share/path/to/file
dpkg -L package-name
On RPM-based distributions:
rpm -qf /usr/share/path/to/file
rpm -ql package-name
If no package owns a file, it may have been created by a local administrator, a third-party installer, or a package that uses a different ownership database. Check the software’s installation method before removing it.

Recovery after accidental deletion
- Stop changing files in the affected directory.
- Identify the missing path’s owning package with
dpkg -Sorrpm -qf, if possible. - Reinstall that package using the distribution’s package manager rather than copying a file from another machine.
- Use the distribution’s package-integrity or verification facility if other files may have been altered.
- Review the application’s logs and package-manager history if the problem continues.
Reinstalling the owning package restores package-provided files, but it may not restore data created by a separate installer or repair configuration that was intentionally stored elsewhere.

Mixed package contents
Real packages are not always divided into perfectly pure categories. An application may include architecture-dependent libraries alongside templates, schemas, or other common data. Some packaging policies place the mixed package directory below /usr/lib/<package> rather than splitting every file into /usr/share. Debian Policy explicitly allows relevant exceptions.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Interpreted-language resources
Python, JavaScript, Lua, and other interpreted-language files may work on several CPU architectures, but that alone does not determine their location. They can depend on a specific interpreter, application release, native module, or resource format. User-facing commands normally belong in /usr/bin; private helpers and package-specific resources follow the distribution’s packaging rules.
Different distributions and releases
Two systems can legitimately have different /usr/share contents because they use different distributions, releases, installed packages, desktop environments, language packs, or application versions. A shared directory is not automatically interchangeable between arbitrary Linux systems. The FHS cautions that sharing is generally considered within compatible installations of a given operating system and release, not indiscriminately across operating systems.
Merged /usr
On many current Linux systems, paths such as /bin, /sbin, and /lib are symbolic links into corresponding directories under /usr. This changes the physical layout, not the conceptual role of /usr/share. The exact implementation varies by distribution; the Debian Handbook provides examples.

Containers and immutable systems
Container images and read-only or atomic operating-system images may mount, compose, or update /usr differently from a traditional mutable installation. In practice, this makes direct edits even less appropriate: installed data is commonly part of an image or deployment unit, while mutable state is kept in separate writable layers, volumes, home directories, or /var locations.
Guidance for developers and package maintainers
Install static, system-wide, architecture-independent resources in an application-specific directory such as /usr/share/<application>, following the target distribution’s packaging policy. Avoid scattering unrelated files directly in /usr/share.
As a general classification:
- Compiled commands:
/usr/binor another approved executable directory - Native libraries and architecture-specific plugins:
/usr/libor the distribution’s multiarch path - Static common resources:
/usr/share/<application> - Host-specific configuration:
/etc - Persistent or generated state:
/var/lib - Per-user writable resources:
$XDG_DATA_HOME, normally$HOME/.local/share
Do not assume that “architecture-independent” means “unconditionally shareable.” Confirm that the data is compatible with the application version, operating-system release, and packaging policy.
Quick decision checklist
A file is a good candidate for /usr/share when it is:
- Installed for system-wide use
- Static or generally read-only
- Not inherently tied to a CPU architecture or native ABI
- Not host-specific configuration
- Not user-specific data
- Not runtime state, a log, a database, or a cache
- Placed there in accordance with the distribution’s packaging policy
If you are unsure, identify the package owner and consult the application and distribution documentation before editing or deleting anything.
