Yes, you can use Revolut for most online card payments. Enter the details of a physical or multi-use virtual Revolut card wherever the merchant accepts its Visa or Mastercard network. For a genuinely one-time purchase, a disposable virtual card can reduce exposure of reusable card details—but it is the wrong choice for subscriptions, hotel bookings, car rentals, deposits and other transactions where a merchant may charge the card again.

This guide explains which Revolut payment method to use, how fees and currency conversion work, and what to do when a payment is declined, pending, reversed, refunded or unrecognised. Features, fees and card availability vary by country and plan; the app paths and US-specific dispute timings referenced here were checked against Revolut documentation on August 18, 2026.

Can you use Revolut for online payments?

Revolut works for ordinary online card payments wherever the relevant Revolut-issued Visa or Mastercard is accepted, subject to merchant restrictions, country rules, card eligibility, available funds and Revolut’s security checks.

In most cases, “paying online with Revolut” means using Revolut card details at checkout or paying through Apple Pay or Google Pay. It does not usually mean sending a bank transfer to the merchant. Revolut’s card-payment support hub covers the account-specific exceptions and current troubleshooting guidance.

How to make a normal online payment

  1. Open Revolut and check that your available balance is sufficient.
  2. Open Cards from the home screen.
  3. Select your physical card or multi-use virtual card. Use a disposable card only when the transaction is genuinely one-time.
  4. If required, select Show details and complete the requested passcode or one-time verification.
  5. At the merchant’s checkout, enter the card number, expiry date and CVV/CVC. Add the billing name and address exactly as requested.
  6. Complete any additional verification from Revolut or the merchant.
  7. Check the transaction in the Revolut app.

The transaction may initially appear as pending. That means the merchant has requested authorisation, not necessarily that the payment has fully settled.

For the documented virtual-card steps, see Revolut’s virtual-card guide.

Which Revolut card should you use?

Situation Best choice Reason
Ordinary online purchase Physical or multi-use virtual card Designed for normal card-not-present payments.
One-time purchase from an unfamiliar retailer Disposable virtual card, where accepted Reduces exposure of reusable card details.
Subscription, membership or recurring donation Physical or multi-use virtual card The merchant needs to charge the card again.
Hotel, car rental, deposit or pre-authorisation Physical or multi-use virtual card The merchant may verify, capture or release funds later.
Apple Pay or Google Pay checkout Eligible physical or multi-use virtual card in the wallet Disposable cards cannot be added to either wallet.
Cash withdrawal Physical or permitted standard card Virtual cards do not support cash withdrawals.

Multi-use versus disposable virtual cards

Multi-use virtual cards

A multi-use virtual card is the practical default for online shopping. It can be used repeatedly for online payments and, where supported, added to Apple Pay or Google Pay. Revolut’s US documentation says virtual cards can be created without a creation fee and used instantly, although availability can vary by market and plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disposable or single-use virtual cards

A disposable card’s details regenerate after a payment or after 24 hours without use. Revolut says it is automatically terminated after making a payment. That makes it useful for a suitable one-off purchase, but it is not a general-purpose replacement for a standard card.

Do not use a disposable card for:

  • Streaming, software or other subscriptions
  • Free trials that convert into paid plans
  • Hotels and car rentals
  • Security deposits
  • Pre-authorisations or delayed capture
  • Memberships or recurring charitable donations
  • Any merchant likely to charge the card again

These merchants can reject the card because they expect future authorisation or reuse. If that happens, verify the retailer and try a multi-use virtual or physical card instead. A disposable card can reduce future exposure of a card number, but it does not make a purchase risk-free: scams, non-delivery, account takeover and merchant disputes remain possible. Revolut’s restrictions are documented in its virtual-card troubleshooting guidance.

Paying with Apple Pay or Google Pay

If a merchant displays an Apple Pay or Google Pay button, select it, choose your Revolut card and authenticate with your device. Alternatively, add an eligible card in Revolut:

  1. Open Cards.
  2. Select the card.
  3. Choose Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Pay.
  4. Complete the wallet’s verification steps.

Revolut says eligibility can require completed account verification, a non-negative balance, a supported Visa or Mastercard, and a card that is not frozen or terminated. If the option is missing, manual addition through Apple Wallet or Google Wallet may be available. See the wallet setup instructions.

Apple Pay or Google Pay may show different last four digits from the physical Revolut card because the wallet uses a tokenised digital card number. This is normal. If a merchant needs information to process a refund, use the wallet-specific details rather than assuming the physical card number is displayed. Disposable cards cannot be added to these wallets.

If wallet payments stop working, check whether the Revolut card is frozen or terminated. Removing and re-adding it can resolve some wallet suspensions, but replace a card if you believe its details are compromised. Revolut lists additional wallet-decline causes.

Are Revolut online payments free?

Do not interpret “fee-free” as applying to every transaction. Revolut’s US help centre says it does not charge a fee for card purchases in the user’s base currency, subject to applicable terms. Spending in another currency can involve exchange fees or limits based on your country, plan, base currency, destination currency and timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the current local Revolut fee guidance before relying on a particular exchange-cost assumption. Do not apply US, UK or European plan rules interchangeably.

When a foreign merchant offers to convert the price into your home currency, compare the choice carefully. Paying in the merchant’s local currency is often the safer way to avoid the merchant’s own dynamic-currency-conversion markup, but Revolut’s final cost still depends on its current exchange policy, plan allowances, timing, card-network processing, taxes and local surcharges. Revolut is not guaranteed to be the cheapest option in every transaction.

A merchant’s contactless limit is also separate from Revolut’s account or card spending limits. You can set a card-specific monthly limit, where available, through Home → Cards icon → choose card → Settings → Spending limit. Transactions above that configured limit are declined.

Why an online payment may require verification

An online payment may trigger 3-D Secure, an additional authentication step. The prompt can be generated by the merchant, card network or Revolut’s risk systems; not every payment requires it. Approve the request only when it matches a purchase you just initiated and recognise.

A payment can fail if the challenge expires, is ignored or cannot be completed. Revolut’s 3-D Secure documentation describes the additional security layer and challenge process.

What to do if Revolut declines the payment

  1. Tap the failed transaction in Revolut and read the decline reason.
  2. Check your available balance and any account restrictions.
  3. Confirm that the card is not frozen, terminated or expired.
  4. Check the card number, expiry, CVV and billing address.
  5. Check the card’s spending limit.
  6. If using a disposable card, ask whether the merchant requires recurring billing, a deposit, pre-authorisation or later reuse.
  7. Complete any 3-D Secure prompt promptly.
  8. Try a multi-use virtual or physical card instead.
  9. Try Apple Pay or Google Pay if supported.
  10. Check whether the merchant, country or product category is unsupported.
  11. Contact the merchant if its payment processor rejected the transaction.
  12. Contact Revolut through in-app support if the decline persists or appears incorrect.

Do not repeatedly retry a failed checkout when the first attempt may have created an authorisation. Multiple attempts can leave several temporary holds.

Pending, completed, reversed and refunded payments

  • Pending: The merchant requested authorisation, but processing is not complete.
  • Completed: The payment has been processed.
  • Reverted or reversed: The authorisation was released or the payment did not complete as expected.
  • Refunded: The merchant sent money back.

An order can fail even though an authorisation appears in Revolut. Contact the merchant, monitor the status and avoid placing repeated orders until you understand what happened. Merchants can also create more than one authorisation that later resolves differently, so a duplicated appearance is not automatically two final charges.

For the transaction-specific status and timing, use Revolut’s current card-payment support pages rather than assuming that every pending or reversed payment follows the same schedule.

Do not send full card details, passcodes or one-time codes through an unverified message. A refund should not require you to forward money or pay a new “release” fee. If the original payment used Apple Pay or a disposable virtual card, the refund can still be associated with your Revolut account even if the visible card number has changed.

Use Revolut’s dispute process for a valid card dispute

A chargeback is a card-network dispute process, not a guaranteed refund. Report unauthorised activity promptly and provide accurate evidence. Do not describe buyer’s remorse or an ordinary service disagreement as fraud.

For US personal accounts, Revolut says fraud cases may be resolved within 10 days after reporting, ATM cases can take up to 45 days, and other disputes can take up to 90 days. It also says up to 85% of disputes are resolved within five weeks, while complex cases can take up to 12 weeks. These are estimates, not guarantees, and other countries may use different processes or timelines. See Revolut’s chargeback guidance.

If you do not recognise a Revolut card payment

  1. Check the merchant descriptor and transaction date.
  2. Check whether a household member or saved subscription made the payment.
  3. Contact the merchant through its verified official channel when appropriate.
  4. Freeze the card immediately if compromise is possible.
  5. Report suspected fraud in the Revolut app.
  6. Preserve receipts, messages and screenshots for the dispute process.

Use Revolut’s fraud and scam guidance for current safety controls. Never disclose your PIN, passcode, one-time code or login credentials to someone claiming to be Revolut support. Verify the retailer’s domain before paying, enable transaction notifications and consider online spending limits and location-based security where available.

A virtual card or wallet token can limit exposure of the underlying card number, but neither protects against phishing, fake stores, account takeover, delivery fraud or a legitimate merchant failing to provide what you bought.

Is Revolut suitable as your main online-payment method?

Revolut is a strong fit if you want app-controlled spending, quick card freezing, transaction notifications, virtual cards and balance-based spending. It can also be convenient for multi-currency purchases, provided you understand your country’s exchange rules and plan limits.

It is less suitable if you need conventional credit, credit-building, issuer-specific rewards or purchase protections; guaranteed acceptance for hotels and car rentals; predictable foreign-exchange costs without checking current terms; or a payment method that remains independent of app access, device access, account verification and security reviews.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How it compares with alternatives

  • Traditional credit card: May offer credit, rewards and issuer-specific purchase protections, but qualification, interest and foreign-transaction fees vary. It is useful as a backup for high-value purchases.
  • PayPal: Can keep card details out of the merchant checkout and offers its own dispute framework, but adds another account and is not accepted everywhere. Visit PayPal.
  • Apple Pay or Google Pay: These are wallet layers, not replacements for the Revolut account. They can provide convenient, tokenised checkout when the device, card and merchant are eligible. See Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
  • Wise: Worth comparing if your priority is international transfers, holding currencies or cross-border spending. Compare current country-specific fees, card availability and dispute support at Wise; there is no universal cheapest provider.

Practical recommendation: use a multi-use virtual card for most ordinary or recurring online payments, a disposable card only for suitable one-time purchases, and a physical or multi-use card for hotels, rentals, deposits and delayed charges. Keep a traditional credit card as a backup when credit-card protections or a separate funding source matter.
