Use Pipedream’s prebuilt Playwright Take Screenshot action to capture a URL from an HTTP request, schedule, or app event. Enter the URL and filename, choose a color scheme, full-page mode, and optional viewport, then deploy the workflow. The action writes the image to /tmp; add Pipedream File Stores or another storage step when the screenshot must survive the current execution.

What you need before building the workflow

  • A Pipedream account and a new workflow.
  • A URL that the workflow can request.
  • A destination if the image must be retained. The local /tmp directory is temporary and should not be treated as an archive.
  • A trigger type: HTTP request, schedule, or an event from a connected app.

Pipedream describes its Playwright component as a source-available, prebuilt action. Playwright enables reliable end-to-end testing for modern web apps, according to Pipedream’s action documentation.

Build a screenshot workflow with Playwright

  1. Create a workflow. In Pipedream, choose a new workflow and select a trigger. Use an HTTP trigger for request-driven captures, a schedule for recurring snapshots, or an app event when another service should start the capture.
  2. Add the screenshot action. Add the Playwright Take Screenshot action and connect the requested Playwright account when prompted.
  3. Set the URL. Supply the complete address, including https://. If the URL should come from an HTTP request or event payload, map that field into the URL input.
  4. Choose a filename. Enter a name such as homepage.webp or pricing.png. The action saves the result as /tmp/<filename>.
  5. Set appearance and size. Select no-preference, light, or dark for color scheme. Enable fullPage when you need the complete scrollable document. You can also set viewport width and height; when omitted, the component defaults to 1280 by 720.
  6. Deploy and test. Deploy the workflow, send a test event, and inspect the action output and following steps. Turn on the trigger only after the test produces the expected file.

HTTP-triggered example

An HTTP trigger can accept a URL in the request body and pass it to the screenshot action. Validate or restrict accepted domains before exposing an endpoint publicly; otherwise, an untrusted caller could make your workflow request unintended sites.

Scheduled captures

Choose a schedule trigger when you need a periodic visual record, such as a daily page snapshot. Use a deterministic filename strategy in a later code or storage step if each run must be retained rather than overwritten.

App-event captures

An app event is useful when a connected service should initiate the capture—for example, after a deployment or content update. Map the event’s canonical URL rather than a display label or shortened link.

Full-page, viewport, and color settings

Setting What it controls When to use it
URL The page Playwright visits Every capture
Filename The file name under /tmp Use an extension and a run-specific name when retaining many images
Color scheme no-preference, light, or dark Match the appearance you want to document
fullPage Captures the full scrollable page instead of only the viewport Long articles, landing pages, and audit records
Viewport width/height The browser page dimensions Responsive-layout checks and consistent comparisons; defaults are 1280 × 720 when omitted

The component launches Playwright, creates a page with the selected viewport and color scheme, navigates with page.goto(this.url), calls page.screenshot(opts), writes the file, and closes the browser. Its documented example does not add a fixed delay or custom readiness condition.

Waiting for dynamic pages

A navigation can finish before a client-rendered chart, lazy image, or authenticated dashboard is visually complete. Do not add an arbitrary delay to every workflow. Instead, adapt the component or add a step that waits for a condition that represents readiness on your target page.

  • Wait for a distinctive selector, such as a chart container or “loaded” state.
  • Use a short delay only when the site has no reliable readiness signal.
  • For pages that load below the fold, combine a readiness condition with fullPage.
  • For login-protected pages, supply authentication in a preceding browser step or use a permitted session; never place credentials in a public trigger payload.

Because page behavior varies, the correct condition depends on the site. The documented action itself does not promise a universal wait time.

Persist the screenshot beyond the run

The generated file is local to the workflow execution at /tmp/<filename>. Pipedream’s File Stores documentation says local copies in /tmp can be deleted after a workflow goes cold, and community guidance says files are not guaranteed to remain between executions. Treat the directory as staging, not durable storage.

  1. Add a Pipedream File Stores step or a configured external storage integration after the screenshot action.
  2. Pass the generated path to that step.
  3. Save the returned durable identifier or URL in your database, notification, or downstream event.
  4. If the capture is an audit record, store metadata too: source URL, timestamp, viewport, color scheme, and workflow run ID.

Check current Pipedream storage documentation for retention rules and configuration because those details can change.

When the GetScreenshot API action is a better fit

Pipedream also documents a GetScreenshot API action that works with an HTTP or webhook trigger. It requires a connected GetScreenshot account and API-key authentication, and supports PNG, JPEG, or PDF output, optional email delivery, DOM-element targeting, and additional API parameters.

Need Playwright action GetScreenshot API action
Browser viewport and color controls Direct inputs for viewport, color scheme, and full-page capture Uses the API’s parameters
Output Screenshot file written to /tmp PNG, JPEG, or PDF response options
Element targeting Not listed as an input in the basic action Optional DOM-element targeting is documented
Email delivery Not listed Optional email delivery
Account setup Connect the Playwright account in Pipedream Connect GetScreenshot and configure API-key authentication
Retention Still requires File Stores or another destination Persist the returned output in a storage step you control

The available documentation does not establish a controlled comparison of speed, reliability, or pricing, so choose based on these capabilities rather than an assumed performance ranking.

Troubleshooting checklist

The workflow succeeds but no file is available later

Cause: The file remained in temporary /tmp storage. Fix: Upload it to File Stores or another storage provider in the same execution and save the resulting identifier.

The screenshot shows a loading shell

Cause: The page’s JavaScript had not finished rendering when page.goto returned. Fix: Add a site-specific selector wait or carefully chosen delay, then retest with the same URL and viewport.

The lower part of the page is missing

Cause: Full-page mode is disabled, or content appears only after scrolling. Fix: Enable fullPage and wait for lazy content’s readiness condition.

The layout differs from a user’s screen

Cause: The workflow uses its configured viewport, which defaults to 1280 × 720 if dimensions are omitted. Fix: Set explicit width and height matching the device or breakpoint you need to document.

The trigger can be abused

Cause: An unrestricted HTTP endpoint accepts arbitrary URLs. Fix: Authenticate the trigger, validate schemes and hostnames, and reject destinations you do not intend to fetch.

Authentication or consent blocks the page

Cause: The target requires a session, login, or interaction. Fix: Use an authorized browser flow and provide only the minimum credentials through Pipedream’s secret handling. Do not bypass access controls.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients capture pages.

Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full option list. A minimal cURL call is:

Operational and cost considerations

  • Capture only the viewport you need; full-page images can be substantially larger and take longer to transfer.
  • Use stable filenames or durable object keys that include the source and timestamp.
  • Keep the screenshot and its metadata together so later reviewers can reproduce the viewport and color settings.
  • For recurring jobs, monitor failed runs and storage growth rather than assuming temporary files are retained.
  • Review current Pipedream component, trigger, and storage limits before committing to a high-frequency schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Pipedream capture a PDF with the Playwright screenshot action?

The basic Playwright action documented here saves a screenshot file. Use the documented GetScreenshot API action when PDF output is a requirement.

Where does Pipedream save the screenshot?

The Playwright action writes it to /tmp/<filename> during the workflow execution.

Which trigger should I choose?

Use an HTTP trigger for on-demand requests, a schedule for recurring captures, or an app event when another connected service should start the workflow.

The Bottom Line

Pipedream’s Playwright action is the direct route for automated PNG-style webpage captures: configure the trigger, URL, filename, viewport, color scheme, and full-page option, then move the file from temporary /tmp storage into durable storage. Choose GetScreenshot when PDF, element selection, or email delivery is the deciding requirement.
