Short answer: upload a clear subject photo to an editor, run its background-removal tool, inspect and repair the edges, then place the transparent cutout in your template. If the final file must stay transparent outside the editor, set the design background to no fill and export a transparent PNG. A cutout preview alone does not guarantee a transparent download.
What AI background removal actually prepares
Background removal separates the person, animal, product, or other intended subject from the surrounding pixels. The result is a cutout with transparency around it. You can then layer that subject over a new color, photograph, pattern, presentation slide, social post, or other template.
This is different from merely placing an image on a template. A normal rectangular photo still carries its original background. A cutout lets the template supply the background and keeps the subject independently movable, scalable, and editable.

Two meanings of “transparent”
- Transparent subject image: the area removed by the AI contains no pixels, so the subject can be composited elsewhere.
- Transparent exported design: the entire design is downloaded with no background layer. The editor must be configured for transparency and the file format must support it, normally PNG.
Canva’s official FAQ uses the wording “How do I make a background transparent?” In practice, that request can mean either operation. Confirm which one your deliverable needs before exporting.

Prepare the source image
- Use the highest-resolution original available, with the subject fully visible and reasonably separated from its surroundings.
- Prefer even lighting and contrast between subject and background. Low-contrast edges, fine hair, fur, glass, smoke, lace, and overlapping objects require more inspection.
- Crop away unrelated borders only after checking that no part of the subject is clipped.
Adobe Express says its tool “automatically identifies your subject and removes the background to create a clean cutout.” That is an automated first pass, not a guarantee that every edge detail will survive. Adobe specifically warns that fine details or low-contrast areas may be removed.
Tool-neutral workflow
- Open the editor and template. Start a new design or open a pre-made template in the dimensions you need.
- Upload the source image. Keep the original file so you can retry with a different crop or edit.
- Run background removal. Select the image and choose the editor’s background-removal action.
- Inspect at high zoom. Check hair, fur, fingers, thin cables, transparent containers, shadows, and low-contrast boundaries.
- Refine the mask. Restore missing subject pixels and erase leftover background. Work in small brush strokes and zoom out periodically to check the natural silhouette.
- Compose in the template. Move, resize, rotate, and layer the cutout with the template’s background, text, and other elements. Check that the new background does not reveal halos around the edge.
- Choose the output deliberately. For a normal finished graphic, an opaque format may be appropriate. For reuse in another design, preserve transparency with a transparent PNG and no background layer.
- Open the downloaded file independently. Place it over a contrasting color or in another editor to verify that transparency survived export.
Adobe Express: documented steps
- Open a design in Adobe Express and select the image.
- In the Image panel, choose Remove Background.
- Review the generated cutout. Restore important details if fine or low-contrast areas were removed.
- Continue editing in the design and use a template or other layers to build the composition.
- To export the complete design with transparency, click outside the canvas, set Background to No fill, then choose Transparent PNG when downloading.
Adobe’s instructions distinguish the removal action from the export settings: the first creates the cutout, while No fill and Transparent PNG preserve transparency in the downloaded design. See Adobe Express’s background-removal documentation for the current interface (page updated April 28, 2026).
Canva: documented steps
- Upload your image to Canva. Its feature page lists JPG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF uploads, and describes people, animals, and objects as supported subject types.
- Open a new or pre-made design, place the image, and choose BG Remover.
- Inspect the cutout and refine it with Canva’s Erase and Restore brushes.
- Place the refined subject into the template, then download a PNG when you need the cutout or a transparent design.
Canva’s Help Centre says Background Remover is included with paid plans. Plan names, allowances, labels, and availability can change, so check the entitlement shown in your account before committing to a workflow. The official feature description is at Canva Background Remover, with brush guidance in the Canva Help Centre.

Neither vendor’s documentation establishes a universal winner for edge quality, speed, or difficult images. Choose the editor where your template already lives, then judge the actual cutout at working size.
Refinement checklist for difficult edges
- Hair and fur: zoom in, remove obvious background islands, and restore wisps only when they look natural at final size.
- Transparent or reflective objects: compare the cutout against both light and dark backgrounds; AI masks can confuse reflections with the background.
- Low contrast: restore missing outlines manually rather than relying on a faint halo.
- Shadows: decide whether the original shadow belongs to the subject. If not, erase it and add a new template-consistent shadow.
- Small output sizes: inspect at the size viewers will see. A technically detailed edge may look noisy after reduction.
Troubleshooting
The result removes part of the subject
Use Restore where the subject blends into the background, then rerun with a better-lit or tighter source image if necessary. Do not enlarge a low-resolution file and expect missing detail to return.
A halo or background fringe remains
Zoom in and erase the fringe in short strokes. Test the cutout over both a light and dark layer; a fringe visible on one color may disappear on another but still be present.

The editor shows a checkerboard, but the download is opaque
Remove or disable the design’s background layer, set the background to No fill where the editor provides that control, and select Transparent PNG. Reopen the downloaded file outside the editor to verify.

The transparency option is unavailable
Check the account plan and export format. Canva’s Help Centre currently places Background Remover in paid plans; interface access can change. JPEG cannot carry transparency, so use PNG.
The subject looks cut out after placement
Match scale, lighting, and color with the template. Add a restrained new shadow or edge adjustment instead of retaining an unrelated original background shadow.

Performance, reliability, and file choices
- Keep an untouched original and a refined master cutout; export derivatives for each template rather than repeatedly recompressing one file.
- Use PNG for transparency. Use JPEG only when the final design is intentionally opaque and a smaller file is more important.
- Preview at 100% for edge defects and at final display size for overall realism.
- For repeated assets, name files by subject and version (for example, product-blue-cutout-v2.png) so a later mask repair does not silently overwrite the source.

If your separate task is capturing a web page or template reference rather than removing an image background, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server works with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients through take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options such as full-page capture, CSS-selector elements, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, device presets, PDF output, signed links, async webhooks, and bulk capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. A cURL request is:

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a transparent background from a JPEG?
You can remove the JPEG’s background in an editor, but export the resulting cutout as PNG because JPEG does not preserve transparency.

Should I remove the background before opening the template?
Either order works. Removing it after placing the image lets you judge the edge against the final template; preparing a reusable PNG first is better when the same subject will appear in several designs.
Does a checkerboard preview prove the final file is transparent?
No. Verify that the design background is disabled or set to No fill and that the export format is Transparent PNG, then test the downloaded file in another editor.
