To use a proxy with a website screenshot API, send the proxy address and any credentials in the screenshot request using the provider’s documented proxy parameter. The screenshot service’s browser then loads the target page through that proxy before capturing it. Keep both API and proxy credentials on a server you control—not in public page markup or a shareable image URL—and verify that the result really reflects the proxy’s location.
What a proxy changes in a screenshot request
A screenshot API accepts a target URL (or, with some services, HTML), opens it in a browser renderer, and returns an image or document. The proxy is a routing setting for that browser’s request to the target. It can make a regional preview or test possible when the proxy’s exit IP is in the desired location, but it does not guarantee access to a protected site or override its rules.
Proxy syntax is provider-specific. For example, Screenshots.dev documents a proxy parameter that accepts address:port or user:password@address:port; ScreenshotAPI.net documents the same forms and describes using a different IP or location. Check your chosen provider’s current API reference for accepted proxy schemes, authentication, and request format: Screenshots.dev API reference and ScreenshotAPI.net.

Choose and configure the proxy safely
- Confirm the provider supports proxies. Look for an explicit proxy parameter and the exact accepted formats. Do not assume a provider supports an authenticated proxy, a particular scheme, or a proxy on every endpoint.
- Check browser rendering controls. Confirm that JavaScript executes and that you can wait for a selector, a delay, or another completion condition if the page needs it.
- Use the proxy value in the provider’s expected form. A typical value may look like
proxy.example:8080oruser:[email protected]:8080, but those forms are not universal. - Protect both sets of credentials. Make the screenshot call from a backend or other trusted server. Avoid placing an API key or credential-bearing proxy URL in browser-visible JavaScript, an HTML image tag, or public logs. If the service supports bearer authentication or signed URLs, follow its documented design and limits.
- Set the capture options you need. Add viewport, format, cookies, headers, wait conditions, or capture scope only when your provider supports those fields.
- Validate the returned page. Check redirects, whether the expected page loaded, and a page element or locale indicator that can confirm the rendered result is consistent with the intended region.
Example request shape
The following is provider-neutral pseudocode, not a directly callable endpoint. Replace the route, authentication method, and JSON field names with those in your screenshot provider’s documentation. Never send this credential-bearing example from a public browser client.

}For a GET endpoint, URL-encode both the target URL and proxy value according to that API’s rules. Encoding prevents reserved characters in a password or target URL from being misread as query-string separators; it does not make a public URL safe to share. Prefer a POST body or a server-side request where available.
What to compare in a screenshot API
- Proxy support: Does it accept host and port, authenticated credentials, and the proxy scheme you need?
- Browser execution: Does it render JavaScript, and can it wait for a selector or additional page load time? Cloudflare and Screenshots.dev document browser-rendering and JavaScript-related controls.
- Identity inputs: Can you supply cookies or headers for a signed-in or locale-specific page? Screenshots.dev documents these inputs.
- Capture scope: Compare viewport width and height, full-page capture, selector capture, and device presets. ScreenshotEngine and RenderScreenshot document viewport and capture controls.
- Output and delivery: Check whether the API returns image bytes, a hosted URL, or a document; which image formats or PDF options it supports; and how caching and retention work.
- Credential handling: Compare server-side authentication and signed-URL options. RenderScreenshot documents signed URLs, while ScreenshotEngine documents Bearer authentication.
Provider behavior and parameters can change. Confirm current options, pricing, quotas, and retention terms in the provider’s own documentation before building around them. A proxy can change network origin, but it cannot guarantee that a target will render or permit access.

Troubleshooting proxy captures
The request reports a proxy connection failure
Check the proxy scheme, hostname, port, and credentials character by character. Confirm the screenshot provider permits that proxy type and that the proxy accepts connections from the provider’s rendering environment. If a password contains reserved characters, encode it as the provider instructs; do not assume ordinary URL encoding is accepted in every proxy field.

The page shows the wrong country or region
The screenshot provider’s browser uses the proxy’s egress location, which may not match the location you intended. Confirm the proxy operator’s exit region and test against a page that explicitly displays locale or IP-derived information. Also distinguish IP-based behavior from browser timezone, language, or geolocation settings: a proxy alone may not change those browser attributes.

The image is blank or missing content
First establish whether the target loaded at all. If it did, enable JavaScript rendering if the provider exposes that setting and increase its wait condition, ideally by waiting for a page-specific selector rather than adding an arbitrary long delay. Check whether the provider is blocking required assets or whether a target-side bot check, consent flow, or login gate is preventing the expected content from appearing.
The capture is logged out
Supply the required cookies or authorization headers through documented provider fields, if available. Keep them in a server-side request and avoid embedding session values in a public screenshot URL or client-side code. Be aware that cookies are scoped to domains and may expire or be invalid outside the session in which they were issued.
A public image URL exposes a key or proxy password
Remove credential-bearing query parameters from the public markup and rotate any secret that has already been exposed. Make the screenshot request from your backend, then serve the resulting image through your own access-controlled route or use a provider’s documented signed-link mechanism where appropriate. A signed URL can still be copied by anyone who can see it, so treat it according to its expiry and access scope.

The target blocks the renderer
A proxy changes the network origin; it does not guarantee passage through bot detection, CAPTCHAs, login requirements, rate limits, or contractual restrictions. Verify that your use is permitted by the target’s terms and the API provider’s acceptable-use policy. If access is denied, use an authorized integration or request access rather than treating proxy rotation as a guaranteed fix.

Proxying adds another network hop, so connection quality and distance can affect how quickly a page becomes ready. A page with extensive JavaScript or slow third-party assets may need a more precise wait condition; waiting for network idle can also take longer on pages that maintain background connections. Tune capture waits against the content you need, and use the provider’s returned status or headers to distinguish a successful image from a page that merely produced an output file.
Before relying on captures in production, test representative target pages, proxy locations, redirects, and authentication states. Set timeouts appropriate to your workflow, retry only transient failures, and avoid retry loops that repeatedly load the same blocked destination. Compare provider costs and any proxy charges against expected request volume, and check whether cache hits, failures, or retries are billed under the current terms. Those details vary by provider and plan.

FAQ
Can I use any proxy service with a screenshot API?
No. The screenshot provider must support proxy routing, and its supported proxy types must be compatible with the proxy service. Confirm accepted formats and schemes in both providers’ documentation.
Does using a proxy guarantee access to geo-restricted content?
No. A proxy may make a request appear to come from another network location, but the target can still deny access, require authentication, or use other checks. Test the page and follow the target site’s rules.
Can I put a proxy URL in an image tag?
Do not put a credential-bearing proxy URL or screenshot API key in browser-visible markup. Make authenticated capture requests on a trusted server and expose only the image access mechanism you intend users to have.
