To capture a website screenshot from a terminal, use Playwright’s playwright-cli: open the page, then run its screenshot command. Choose a viewport capture for what is visible, an element capture for one component, or --full-page for the scrollable page. These are screenshots of rendered webpage content—not the browser’s address bar or the whole desktop.
Capture a website screenshot with Playwright CLI
Playwright’s command-line workflow is useful when you want to inspect a page without writing an automation script. The CLI runs headless by default; add --headed when you want to see the browser window. The official getting-started guide covers Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge. Follow its current installation instructions for your environment, then check the installed CLI’s help output because commands and options can change.
- Install the CLI by following the Playwright CLI getting-started guide.
- Open the target page:
playwright-cli open https://example.com. - Capture it:
playwright-cli screenshot --filename=page.png.
The resulting file is saved under the chosen filename. Replace https://example.com with the page you need. If you need to see the browser while it runs, start the CLI in headed mode using the option shown by the guide or installed help output.

A screenshot’s scope affects what appears in the output. The CLI supports a visible viewport, a selected element, or a full-page capture. Consult the Playwright CLI screenshot and PDF reference for the current command syntax and option details.

Visible viewport
A viewport screenshot records the page area currently visible in the browser. It is the right choice for checking a layout at a particular scroll position and browser size. If the important content is farther down, navigate or scroll to it before capturing.
One element
Use an element target, such as a CSS selector, when you need a focused image of a form, card, or other component rather than the surrounding page. Confirm that the selector identifies the intended element on the page; if it does not match, there is no useful target to capture.
Full page
Add --full-page to capture the page’s scrollable content rather than just the visible viewport. For example: playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.png. Long pages can produce very tall images; the CLI reference does not establish a universal maximum height, so check the resulting file and downstream tool limits.

Filename, format, and resolution
Use --filename to choose where and under what name the image is saved. The documented formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP. PNG is the default if no type or inferable filename extension selects another format. Use --hires for device-pixel output. In that mode, screenshot pixel coordinates no longer correspond one-to-one with CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands, which matters if you later use the image to guide interactions.

Get the page ready before capturing
A command can succeed and still capture an incomplete page. Navigate to the correct URL, then make sure the content you care about has rendered before taking the screenshot. The CLI capture reference describes capture options, not one readiness condition that works for every website.
- For a page with a known loading indicator or target component, wait until that element reaches the state you need before capturing.
- For a page that loads content as you scroll, scroll to the relevant area before a viewport capture; use full-page mode when you need the scrollable content.
- For animation or frequently changing data, choose a moment when the appearance is stable enough for your purpose.
- When the output looks blank or incomplete, inspect the page in headed mode and check whether it requires a login, user interaction, or additional time to render.
What a page screenshot does—and does not—show
A webpage screenshot captures rendered page content. It does not automatically include browser chrome such as the URL bar, tabs, or window frame, and it is not a capture of the entire operating-system desktop. If your goal is to document the browser window as a whole, use a desktop or window capture method instead.
For visual review, an image shows appearance; it does not expose the page’s semantic structure. Playwright’s documentation says, “Screenshots complement accessibility snapshots:” An accessibility snapshot provides a tree and references that can help identify and interact with controls, while the screenshot serves visual inspection. When to use the CLI, Playwright code, or Puppeteer
Use the CLI for a command-oriented session where you want to open a page and capture it directly. For repeatable jobs integrated into an application, an API can make navigation, waits, capture settings, and cleanup part of your own code. Puppeteer’s example waits for networkidle2 before saving an image. Treat that as an example, not a universal readiness rule: a site may continue making network requests, or its important content may need a different condition. The official examples do not establish a speed or fidelity winner between the tools.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Capture time depends on browser startup, navigation, page rendering, and any wait condition you choose. The referenced documentation provides no comparative benchmarks, so there is no evidence-based universal claim that one route is faster. For repeated captures, avoid taking the image before the page is ready; an overly broad wait can also stall on sites with ongoing activity. Choose the smallest capture scope that answers your question, especially for very long pages, and verify the output file rather than assuming a successful command means the result is complete.
The CLI and browser automation approaches described here require you to install and run browser automation software in your own environment. Their documentation does not establish a per-screenshot service price; local costs and operational needs depend on your setup.

The command is not recognized
The CLI may not be installed or available on your shell’s path. Revisit the installation steps in the official guide, then check the command’s help output and confirm that the environment where you installed it is the one running the command.

The image is blank or missing important content
Confirm the URL is correct and the page has finished rendering the content you expect. Try headed mode to see whether a login screen, consent prompt, challenge, or other interaction blocks the page. Wait for a meaningful page condition rather than assuming a fixed delay works for every site.
The screenshot cuts off below the fold
A standard viewport capture shows only the visible area. Use --full-page for scrollable page content, or scroll to a particular section first when you only need a viewport image of that section.
The element capture does not target the right thing
Check that your selector matches the intended element in the current page state. If the page renders the component later, wait for it first. For debugging, inspect the page in headed mode before changing the selector.
Image coordinates do not match interaction coordinates
If you used --hires, the output uses device pixels while mouse commands use CSS pixels. Account for that scale difference when mapping points from the image to browser interactions.

That is expected: a page screenshot captures webpage content, not browser or operating-system chrome. Switch to a desktop or window capture method if those elements are required.
