USB Type-B and USB Type-C are connector families, not performance ratings. Type-B is the older, peripheral-oriented shape found on printers, scanners, audio interfaces and legacy drives. Type-C is the small, reversible connector used on current phones, tablets, computers, chargers, docks and displays. A USB-C plug alone does not promise USB 3.2, USB4, fast charging, Thunderbolt or video.

To choose the right cable, identify the connector at both ends, then verify the USB data rate, power-delivery capability, display support and cable rating.

The short answer

  • Type-B: usually a square or trapezoidal device-side connector. Standard-B, Mini-B, Micro-B and the wider USB 3.x Micro-B are different physical variants.
  • Type-C: a small, reversible connector and cable system that can be used on hosts, peripherals, chargers, docks and displays.
  • Neither name is a speed label. USB 2.0, USB 3.2, USB4, USB Power Delivery and display technologies describe separate capabilities.

The USB-IF describes Type-C as a connector and cable system rather than a guaranteed speed or power level: USB Type-C specification.

What USB Type-B means

Traditional USB cabling generally put the host—such as a computer—at the Type-A end and the peripheral at the Type-B end. The host controls the connection; the printer, interface or drive is the device. Type-B identifies the shape, not the USB generation inside the equipment.

Standard USB Type-B

This is the larger, nearly square connector common on printers, scanners, desktop peripherals and some audio equipment.

Mini-USB Type-B

Mini-B was used on older cameras, GPS units, MP3 players and similar compact equipment. It is now largely legacy hardware.

Micro-USB Type-B

Often shortened to “Micro-USB,” Micro-B appeared on older phones, cameras, e-readers, controllers, power banks and accessories.

USB 3.x Micro-B

Some external hard drives use a wider, two-section Micro-B plug. It is not the same as ordinary USB 2.0 Micro-B. A cable must match both the wider connector and the drive’s supported USB generation.

What USB Type-C means

Type-C has a rounded, compact plug that works in either orientation. Unlike traditional Type-B, it can be used on both host and peripheral devices, enabling thinner computers, phones, monitors, docks and chargers.

USB-C is not synonymous with:

  • USB 3.2 or USB4 data;
  • USB Power Delivery (PD);
  • Thunderbolt;
  • DisplayPort or HDMI output; or
  • high-wattage charging.

One USB-C port may provide only USB 2.0 data and basic charging. Another may support high-speed data, laptop charging, external displays and Thunderbolt or USB4. Check the device specification rather than inferring capability from the shape.

Main buying risk Wrong physical variant or USB generation Assuming every USB-C cable has identical features

Four separate things people call “USB”

1. Connector shape

Type-A, Type-B, Micro-B and Type-C describe the physical interface. Adapters and cables solve shape mismatches, but do not automatically add capability.

2. Data specification

USB 2.0, USB 3.2 and USB4 describe signaling and transfer features. USB4 is built around Type-C. The USB-IF document library lists current USB Type-C, USB4 and USB Power Delivery documents, including Type-C Specification Release 2.5 (April 8, 2026) and USB4 Specification Version 2.0 (April 2, 2026).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Power

USB Battery Charging and USB Power Delivery are separate from the connector. A charger, source, cable and receiving device must all support the required power level and negotiation.

4. Display and alternate modes

DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 display tunneling and Thunderbolt can carry video over a USB-C-shaped connection, but only when the port, cable and device implement the relevant mode.

The cable and the slowest device in the chain remain decisive. A hub, dock, adapter or legacy peripheral can reduce an otherwise modern connection to a lower mode.

Does USB-C mean faster data?

No. USB 2.0 remains common in inexpensive USB-C cables and basic peripherals. A USB-C cable may charge a laptop while transferring data only at USB 2.0 rates. Apple’s 60W USB-C Charge Cable, for example, is specified for up to 60W and USB 2 rates.

Look for an explicit label such as USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB 40Gbps or USB 80Gbps. Those are advertised signaling rates, not guaranteed file-copy speeds: protocol overhead, storage performance, heat, hub sharing and the slower endpoint reduce real throughput. The USB-IF’s USB 80Gbps announcement is available at USB 80Gbps materials.

A Type-B printer can work perfectly through a modern adapter while remaining limited by its own USB controller. Replacing the computer-side plug cannot turn it into a USB4 device.

Does USB-C mean fast charging?

Fast charging depends on four linked ratings:

  • Cable power rating: the power it is designed to carry safely.
  • Charger output: the wattage available from the power source, including any sharing between ports.
  • Device input: what the phone, tablet, laptop or peripheral accepts.
  • Protocol: whether USB Power Delivery or another supported charging system negotiates that level.

USB Power Delivery is optional, not an automatic property of every Type-C product. USB-IF packaging guidance separates Type-C, USB 3.2, USB4 and USB PD: Type-C language and packaging guidelines.

A cable marked 240W does not force a phone or laptop to accept 240W. It only states the cable’s capability when the charger and device support the same power level.

Can USB-C carry video?

Only if the source port supports a display mode. Check for DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 display tunneling, Thunderbolt or a stated monitor-output feature. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter cannot create video capability absent from the source.

  • A charge-only USB-C port cannot drive a monitor.
  • A data-and-charging port may still lack display output.
  • A Thunderbolt port uses the USB-C shape but is not equivalent to every USB-C port.
  • Docks can impose resolution, refresh-rate, power-supply and bandwidth limits.

Verify the laptop, tablet or phone specification and the dock’s required upstream protocol before buying.

Can a Type-B device be replaced with Type-C?

Sometimes you can connect it; changing the connector alone does not upgrade it.

Direct USB-C-to-USB-B cable

For a printer or scanner, use a purpose-built USB-C-to-USB-B data cable. It is usually cleaner than stacking adapters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB-C hub plus an existing cable

A USB-C hub or dock with USB-A lets you retain a known-good USB-A-to-B printer cable. Each additional device is another possible failure point.

Legacy drives and interfaces

Use the matching USB-C-to-Micro-B cable for an older drive, including the wider two-section cable where required. MIDI and audio interfaces often need only ordinary USB data; a USB-C plug does not make them faster.

Replacing a device’s physical connector would require redesigning its electronics, wiring, power negotiation and possibly display or high-speed signaling. An adapter preserves compatibility; it normally cannot add missing USB, PD or video features.

How to choose the right cable

Printer or scanner

  • Choose USB-C-to-USB-B, or USB-C-to-USB-A plus your existing USB-A-to-B cable.
  • Match the printer’s specified USB generation.
  • Do not pay for USB4 or Thunderbolt when the printer supports only USB 2.0.

Older external hard drive

  • Identify standard-B, Micro-B USB 2.0 or the wider USB 3.x Micro-B connector.
  • Use a cable that supports the drive’s data generation; a USB 2.0 cable can make a USB 3.x drive appear slow.

Phone or tablet

  • Confirm USB-C-to-USB-C versus USB-A-to-USB-C.
  • Check charging wattage, data speed and display output separately.
  • Confirm the charger supports the device’s fast-charge protocol.

Laptop dock or monitor

  • Verify USB4 or Thunderbolt requirements and DisplayPort Alt Mode.
  • Check supported display count, resolution and refresh rate.
  • Confirm power-delivery input/output, cable length and downstream bandwidth sharing.

High-speed storage

Buy by the stated data rate—USB 10Gbps, 20Gbps, 40Gbps, 80Gbps or a relevant Thunderbolt version—not by “USB-C” alone.

Troubleshooting USB connections

It fits, but data is slow

  1. Check the cable’s explicit data-rate marking.
  2. Connect directly to the computer, bypassing hubs and adapters.
  3. Try a known high-speed cable and another port.
  4. Check whether the peripheral or its legacy connector is USB 2.0.

The device charges, but the laptop does not

  1. Confirm the laptop’s required wattage and the charger’s output with its other ports considered.
  2. Use a clearly rated USB-C cable.
  3. Test charger-to-laptop directly, without a dock.
  4. Verify that the laptop port accepts charging and that USB PD can negotiate.

A USB-C dock shows no monitor

  1. Verify DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt support on the computer.
  2. Check the dock’s required upstream protocol and use its supplied or rated cable.
  3. Test the monitor directly from the computer.
  4. Connect the dock’s power supply and check resolution limits.

A USB-B printer is not detected

  1. Use a purpose-built USB-C-to-USB-B data cable.
  2. Try another USB-C port and a direct connection.
  3. Check the operating system’s device list and install or update the printer driver.
  4. Remove power-only adapters or incompatible hubs from the path.

A drive operates only at USB 2.0 speed

Check for the wider USB 3.x Micro-B plug, a USB 2.0 cable, a USB 2.0 hub, poor contact in the two-section connector or a USB 2.0-limited host port.

Labels, certification and buying traps

  • “USB-C”: connector type only.
  • “USB 3.2”: data specification, not a connector shape.
  • “USB4”: a USB-C-based data and tunneling specification; actual features still depend on the implementation.
  • “PD”: Power Delivery support; verify the wattage.
  • “240W”: a cable or charger power capability, not a promise that the device will draw 240W.
  • Thunderbolt logo: stronger evidence of Thunderbolt support than a generic USB-C symbol.
  • DisplayPort logo: indicates a display-capable implementation, but consult the device specification.

Prefer packaging that states speed and power clearly. USB-IF certification and logo rules are separate from merely having a Type-C connector; see the USB4 product and packaging guidelines and USB-IF document library.

Current standards and example accessories

As listed by USB-IF, the current documents include Type-C Specification Release 2.5 (April 8, 2026), USB4 Specification Version 2.0 (April 2, 2026) and USB Power Delivery Revision 3.2 Version 1.2 (May 20, 2026). Specifications can change, so use the dated USB-IF library when checking a new product.

For orientation, U.S. Apple Store prices seen August 16, 2026 were $19 for the 1 m 60W USB-C Charge Cable, $29 for a 2 m 240W cable, $19 for a 20W USB-C Power Adapter, $59 for a 35W dual-port adapter, $69 for a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and $69 for a 1 m Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable. Prices and availability can change; these examples illustrate that power, data, display and Thunderbolt accessories are separate products. See Apple charging accessories and Apple Mac accessories.

Other vendors listed by Apple, including Anker, Belkin, CalDigit, mophie, Nimble and Native Union, vary in price, length, warranty, port selection and certification. Choose by stated capability rather than brand alone.

Before you buy: a compact checklist

  1. Identify both connector ends.
  2. Confirm the required USB data rate.
  3. Check cable power rating, charger output and device input.
  4. Verify DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt if video is needed.
  5. Choose an appropriate length, especially for high-speed links.
  6. Prefer clearly labeled, reputable or USB-IF-certified products.
  7. Account for hub bandwidth and the peripheral’s built-in limit.
  8. Do not pay for capabilities the device cannot use.

Final verdict

Type-B remains a sound choice for established printers, scanners, audio interfaces and other peripherals. Type-C is the more flexible connector for new equipment because it is reversible and can carry modern data, power and display features. But the connector is only the starting point: verify the USB generation, cable rating, USB Power Delivery, display mode and device limits for the result you actually need.
