Short answer: URL2PNG and Urlbox are hosted screenshot APIs, but the better choice depends on your render volume, input type, waiting controls, output formats and integration model. URL2PNG publishes plans starting at $29 per month for 5,000 fresh screenshots; Urlbox starts at $19 per month for up to 2,000 renders. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when you want clean captures, billing only for successful clean shots and a $5 paid tier.

URL2PNG Bootstrapped: $29/month for 5,000 fresh screenshots; $0.006 each over quota Hosted screenshot API; verify current request options in its plans and documentation Teams that fit its published volume tiers
Urlbox Lo-Fi: $19/month for up to 2,000 renders; Hi-Fi: $49 for 5,000; Ultra: $99 for 15,000 Render links or POST requests; synchronous, polling and webhook patterns Projects needing URL or HTML rendering with configurable capture settings

Prices above are vendor-published values accessed September 29, 2026. Pricing, quotas and feature availability can change, so confirm the live pages before committing: URL2PNG plans and Urlbox pricing.

What you are actually comparing

Both products are hosted software services: you send a URL (and, in Urlbox’s case, documented HTML workflows), and the provider runs a browser to return an image or other supported output. You do not need a physical product, browser machine or Amazon accessory to make this decision.

The practical choice has four parts:

  • Volume economics: compare monthly price, included fresh renders, overage charges and cache treatment.
  • Capture behavior: check viewport, full-page or element capture, delays, selector waits, custom CSS, headers, proxy and user-agent controls.
  • Output: verify image formats, PDF support and any metadata or structured-content features your pipeline needs.
  • Integration: decide whether a render URL, synchronous API response or asynchronous POST with polling/webhook best fits your application.

URL2PNG: plans and evaluation points

Published tiers

URL2PNG’s plans page lists:

  • Bootstrapped: $29 per month for 5,000 freshly generated screenshots, then $0.006 per additional screenshot.
  • Traction: $99 per month for 20,000 fresh screenshots, then $0.005 per additional screenshot.
  • Killinit: $199 per month for 50,000 fresh screenshots, then $0.004 per additional screenshot.
  • Enterprise: an option is listed, but the reviewed page does not state a comparable fixed price.

These are listed allowances, not an independent measurement of speed, fidelity or uptime. Recheck the plan page for current taxes, billing terms, retention rules and feature limits.

Questions to answer before selecting it

Confirm whether your required capture controls are available at the tier you would buy: full-page behavior, element targeting, delayed or selector-based waits, custom request headers, cookies, user-agent, proxy support and your required image or PDF format. Also establish how URL2PNG handles retries, browser failures, cache hits and asynchronous work in your own application.

Urlbox: request patterns and plans

Render links or API requests

Urlbox documentation describes two broad patterns. A render link can return a rendered asset directly, which is convenient for an image URL in a page or a simple backend fetch. POST requests can be synchronous or asynchronous. Asynchronous jobs can be polled or completed through a webhook, allowing your worker queue to avoid holding an HTTP connection open.

The documentation covers URL and HTML use cases and examples for SDKs and capture settings. It also describes vendor examples such as website galleries, advertising assets, screenshot archives, visual checks, HTML-generated images and PDF generation. Those are documented use cases, not an independent assessment of output quality.

Published pricing

Tier Monthly price Included renders
Lo-Fi $19 Up to 2,000
Hi-Fi $49 Up to 5,000
Ultra $99 Up to 15,000
Business $498 Limit and feature details are stated on the live pricing page
Enterprise From $3,000 Terms set by the provider

Urlbox states that its seven-day trial requires no credit card. Its pricing page describes different limits, support and feature access by tier. It also says cached Render Link screenshots are retained for 30 days and do not count against the monthly quota when served from cache; treat API cache behavior separately and verify the current wording before modeling costs.

Which service fits your workload?

Choose by volume, not headline price

At low volume, Urlbox’s $19 tier has the lowest stated monthly entry price among these two vendors. URL2PNG’s $29 plan includes more fresh renders, so it can be cheaper per included render if you actually use most of the allowance. At higher volume, compare the overage schedule and whether your traffic is mostly fresh or cacheable. A plan that looks inexpensive can become costly when every request forces a new browser render.

Choose by input and capture controls

If your source is generated HTML rather than a publicly reachable URL, verify the exact HTML submission method and payload limits before implementation. For dynamic pages, test the controls that matter to you: wait for a selector or network idle, add a delay, hide a cookie banner, apply custom CSS, set a viewport and capture a full page or one element. Do not assume that a feature mentioned in a marketing comparison is available on every tier.

Choose by delivery model

Render links are simple for low-friction embeds. Synchronous calls are straightforward for a request that normally completes quickly. Polling or webhooks are safer for long pages, PDF generation and batch work because your application can queue jobs, retry status checks and process completed assets independently.

How to compare fidelity and reliability fairly

Urlbox’s URL2PNG alternative page claims that URL2PNG has difficulty with newer CSS features and slower-loading WebGL pages, and contrasts URL2PNG’s options with Urlbox’s controls. Those statements are Urlbox’s vendor-authored claims, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. No controlled comparison established which service has better fidelity, speed or failure rates.

Run your own acceptance test using identical conditions:

  1. Prepare representative pages: a static article, a JavaScript dashboard, a long lazy-loaded page, a WebGL page if relevant and a page behind a consent banner.
  2. Use the same viewport, device scale, URL, wait condition and output format for each provider.
  3. Check layout, fonts, images loaded below the fold, animations, sticky elements, consent overlays and final file dimensions.
  4. Record elapsed time, HTTP status, browser errors, retries and whether a cache hit was billed.
  5. Repeat at the times and traffic levels you expect in production; one successful manual request is not a reliability guarantee.

Implementation and operational checklist

  • Keep API keys server-side; never expose them in browser JavaScript or public render URLs unless the provider’s signing mechanism is designed for that use.
  • Set an application timeout longer than your normal page-render time and implement bounded retries for transient network failures.
  • Use idempotent job identifiers or a deduplication key so webhook retries cannot create duplicate records.
  • Store the requested URL, viewport, wait settings, provider response, cache status and output checksum with each asset.
  • Validate downloaded content type and file size before handing an image or PDF to downstream users.
  • Test pages that require authentication using provider-supported headers or cookies, while avoiding accidental leakage of credentials into logs.

Common problems and fixes

Blank or partially rendered pages

Usually the capture happened before client-side rendering or lazy images completed. Increase the delay, wait for a stable selector or network-idle condition, and ensure the page does not require an interaction that your request never performs.

Cookie or newsletter overlays in the image

Use a documented selector-hide or click step where available. If the overlay comes from a consent platform, test several regions and consent states; a CSS hide rule may remove the box while leaving the page dimmed by a backdrop.

WebGL or modern CSS differences

Check the provider’s current browser-engine support and test the exact page. Reduce effects only as a fallback; changing the application solely to suit an unverified renderer can hide the real compatibility issue.

Timeouts and intermittent failures

Separate page-load timeout from your own HTTP client timeout. Capture diagnostic response headers or job error details, retry only transient failures, and send permanently failing URLs to a review queue instead of retrying indefinitely.

Unexpected usage charges

Compare fresh-render counts with cache hits, duplicate requests and retries. Set cache policy deliberately, monitor usage against the plan allowance and verify how asynchronous jobs are counted.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try because it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only clean shots and has the lowest paid starting tier. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.

One request is enough:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the complete parameter reference and examples in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, HTML/CSS input, custom JavaScript, clicks, selector hiding, selector/delay/network-idle waits, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.

Before the shot, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Bottom line

Pick URL2PNG when its published fresh-render tiers and controls match your workload. Pick Urlbox when its render-link, HTML and asynchronous workflows fit your integration, especially if its cache behavior reduces repeat costs. Run a controlled sample before production because the available comparison evidence is vendor-authored rather than an independent benchmark. Try ScreenshotNeo first if clean captures, non-billed failed pages, MCP access or a low-cost starting plan are priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are URL2PNG and Urlbox browser extensions?

No. They are hosted APIs: your software sends capture parameters to a remote browser service and receives an image or other documented output.

Can I use both providers during a migration?

Yes. Route a small, representative percentage of URLs to each provider, normalize viewport and wait settings, then compare visual output, error handling and effective cost before switching traffic.

Do cached screenshots always count as free renders?

Not universally. Urlbox specifically describes 30-day cached Render Link results as not counting against quota when served from cache; verify separate API behavior and current terms.
