If the Upwork Time Tracker is not opening, showing your contract, starting, uploading hours, or capturing screenshots, first fully quit and reopen the Upwork Desktop App. Do not choose Clear cache and restart as an initial fix: Upwork warns that clearing the cache can delete preferences, saved credentials, settings, and unuploaded tracked time.
The right solution depends on the symptom. A missing tracker may mean you are signed into a client profile, while offline hours may simply be waiting to upload. Use the steps below in order, preserving cached work before attempting aggressive repairs.
Before troubleshooting, protect your tracked time
- Stop repeatedly clicking the timer.
- Record the contract, approximate incident time, time zone, operating system, and exact error message.
- Check whether the app says offline, uploading, or indicates cached time.
- Keep the original computer available and do not begin tracking on another computer while cached time is waiting to upload.
- Do not select Clear cache and restart unless Upwork Support specifically directs you to do so.
Upwork says the cache can contain unuploaded work data. Clearing it removes that cache and cannot be undone. See Upwork’s troubleshooting guidance.
First, confirm you are using the right app and contract
The normal Upwork Time Tracker is part of the Upwork Desktop App, not a timer embedded in the Upwork website. The app is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, subject to current compatibility requirements. Download it from Upwork’s official download page.

Time tracking is primarily intended for hourly contracts. Tracking on a fixed-price contract may be available for recordkeeping, but it does not turn that work into protected hourly time. Manual time also has different protection rules.
Quick fixes that solve many tracker failures
1. Fully quit and reopen the Desktop App
- Stop tracking if the app allows it.
- Quit the app completely, not just its visible window.
- Reopen it and wait for it to finish loading.
- Check the tracker, contract list, and Work Diary.
Upwork specifically recommends quitting and reopening because the app may load server-side updates when it starts again. This is different from clearing the cache.
2. Make sure the freelancer profile is active
If the app opens but shows only Messages, or if the Time Tracker and contracts are missing, you may be signed into the client profile.
- Right-click the Upwork tray icon.
- Choose Settings, then Sign out.
- Quit the app.
- Open Upwork in a browser and switch to your freelancer profile.
- Reopen the Desktop App and choose Log in to Upwork.
- Approve the browser handoff if prompted.
Upwork says freelancer contracts and the Time Tracker are unavailable when the client account is active.
3. Sign into Upwork in a browser
If the app session appears stuck, sign into Upwork through a browser using the same account and profile. Then restart the Desktop App. This can refresh authorization and account information without deleting local tracking data.
Fixes by symptom
The Time Tracker does not appear
- Confirm that the Desktop App—not only the browser—is open.
- Check that the freelancer profile is active.
- Verify that you are using the correct Upwork account.
- Confirm that the contract is active and hourly if you expect protected hourly tracking.
- Quit and reopen the app after changing profiles.

- Open Upwork account settings in a browser.
- Go to Profile Settings → Connected services.
- Disconnect Sign in with Google.
- Reopen the Desktop App.
- Log in with your Upwork username instead of the Google sign-in flow.
This is a documented workaround, not a universal explanation for every login failure. Contact Upwork Support if it does not help.

Your contract is missing
Check the active profile, account, contract status, and contract type. The client may have changed or ended the contract. Also confirm that the browser and Desktop App are using the same account.
Fixed-price work does not follow the same tracking and payment-protection rules as hourly work. Do not assume that a visible time entry has the same status as time recorded on an hourly contract.
The timer will not start
Use Upwork’s documented sequence:
- Close the Desktop App.
- Sign into Upwork in an internet browser.
- Clear Upwork-related cookies using Upwork’s cookie-clearing instructions.
- Restart the Desktop App.
- Try the contract again.
Avoid deleting all browser data indiscriminately. Clear the Upwork-related cookies or follow Upwork’s current instructions.
The app will not download or install
Possible causes include a poor connection, firewall or proxy restrictions, insufficient permissions or disk space, an incorrect system clock, or antivirus blocking the installer.

- Try a stable network.
- Check available disk space.
- Run the installer with the required permissions.
- Ask a company administrator to allow the app through a firewall or proxy.
- Verify that security software is not blocking the download.
- Download the installer again from Upwork’s official page.
Do not disable antivirus protection broadly or permanently. Verify the installer source, consult your administrator, and use a narrowly scoped allowlist rule only when appropriate.

The app will not open
Duplicate or outdated installations can interfere with the current app. Quit Upwork, check for remaining processes in Task Manager, Activity Monitor, or your Linux process manager, and end stuck processes. Then remove duplicate or old installations and reinstall the current build using Upwork’s operating-system-specific instructions.
Upwork’s newer troubleshooting page identifies version 5.8.0.33 in its documentation. Treat that as a version-specific reference, not a permanently current version number; check the current compatibility and download guidance before reinstalling.
The tracker says offline
The Desktop App can cache time during minor connection problems or brief maintenance. Restore a stable connection, reopen the app, and wait for the cache to upload.

- Do not clear the cache.
- Do not track from another computer while the cache is pending.
- Check the Work Diary after the upload completes.
Upwork says the latest app version described in its support material can cache up to 24 hours at a time. It also says maintenance-related caching may reconnect within about an hour, while unstable-connection caching may upload within several minutes after the connection stabilizes. These are expectations, not guarantees.
If the Work Diary locks before cached time uploads, Upwork says the time cannot be recovered manually. Contact Support promptly if uploading does not complete, particularly near the weekly billing deadline.
Hours are missing
First check whether the time is still cached locally. Reconnect the original computer, reopen the app, and wait for synchronization. Do not reinstall or clear data before checking.

If the cache was cleared, the upload failed, or the Work Diary has locked, recovery may not be possible. Preserve your own records and contact Upwork Support with the contract ID, incident time, time zone, app version, and any error evidence.

Screenshots are blank or missing
Separate these cases:
- The timer never runs.
- The timer runs but no screenshots appear.
- Screenshots upload but are blank.
- Screenshots appear locally but not in the Work Diary.
Possible causes include missing macOS screen-recording permission, security software interference, an outdated or duplicate installation, a protected window, a display-capture restriction, or a temporary app failure.
On macOS, recheck Screen Recording permission and webcam or camera permission where applicable. Security prompts may return after an update or reinstall, so review permissions again after changing the app version. Upwork maintains separate permission guidance through its troubleshooting documentation.
Upwork’s official download material says screenshots are taken randomly approximately six times per hour. The app’s tracking and screenshot workflow is specific to Upwork; independent time trackers do not create equivalent Work Diary records.

Chromebook workarounds using Linux may exist, but Upwork warns that necessary tracking features may not work. Chromebook support is therefore not equivalent to a supported Windows, macOS, or Linux installation.

Reinstall the Desktop App safely
- Check for offline or cached time first.
- Quit the app and end remaining Upwork processes.
- Remove duplicate or incorrectly installed versions using Upwork’s current Windows, macOS, or Linux instructions.
- Download the current installer from Upwork.
- Install with the required permissions.
- Sign in to the freelancer profile.
- Recheck macOS privacy permissions if applicable.
- Test the correct hourly contract.
Reinstallation can help with corrupted or duplicate installations, but it will not fix an ended contract, a wrong account profile, a server-side issue, or a blocked corporate network. Do not use it as the first response to cached time.
If you already missed time
Check the Work Diary and wait for any cached data to upload before recreating entries. Tell the client what happened and preserve a contemporaneous record of dates, start and end times, tasks, and the technical failure.
If the client agrees, you may be able to add manual time. Treat it as an emergency, client-coordinated fallback—not an equivalent replacement for the Desktop App. Upwork’s time-logging guidance states that manual time is not eligible for Hourly Payment Protection.
Do not recreate time after the fact with no reliable record, assume the client will approve it, or add manual time while cached entries may still upload. External tools such as Toggl, Clockify, TimeCamp, or Harvest can provide backup records, but they do not automatically replace Upwork’s screenshots, Work Diary, or hourly-protection requirements.
Contact Upwork Support with useful evidence
From the Desktop App:
- Select your name in the lower-left corner.
- Choose Support and Feedback.
- Describe the problem.
- Select Send.
Include:
- The exact incident date and time, including time zone.
- Contract ID and whether the issue affects one contract or all contracts.
- Operating system and version.
- Upwork Desktop App version.
- Whether the app opens and whether the timer starts.
- Whether the app shows offline or cached mode.
- Whether the Work Diary updates.
- Exact error text.
- Relevant screenshots or recordings where safe and appropriate.
Should you use another time tracker?
Use an independent tracker for a private backup log, non-Upwork clients, offline records, automatic activity detection, reports, or invoicing. Choose based on free-plan limits, offline synchronization, privacy settings, screenshots, platform support, exports, billing features, and data retention.
- Toggl Track: suited to simple personal and client-facing time records.
- Clockify: worth considering when a free-tier-oriented timer and reports are the priority.
- TimeCamp: useful when automatic tracking and offline-capable records matter, subject to its privacy and pricing terms.
- Harvest: better suited to time tracking combined with expenses, reports, and invoicing.
These tools are backup or general billing tools. They do not automatically satisfy Upwork’s official tracking workflow or provide Upwork Hourly Payment Protection.
