If Upwork is not loading, first check the official Upwork Status page for an incident affecting the feature you need. If it shows the service is operational, open Upwork in a private browser window, then test another supported browser or network. Those checks quickly separate a platform problem from a browser, device, or connection issue. If you see Cloudflare error 1015, stop refreshing and wait before retrying.
1. Check whether Upwork is down
Visit the Upwork Status page before clearing data or reinstalling anything. Look beyond the overall status: Login & Registration, Messages & Notifications, Finding Work, Submitting Proposals, Payments, Hirings, and Team App and Work Diaries can have different status. One component may fail while the rest of the site works.
If Upwork reports an incident affecting the feature you need, follow its updates and preserve any error details. Repeatedly refreshing, deleting cookies, or reinstalling an app is unlikely to resolve a platform-side incident and may make it harder to tell what happened. Status changes, so rely on the live page rather than an old outage report.
2. Try these quick checks in order
- Refresh once. If the page still spins, do not keep submitting the same action repeatedly.
- Open a private window. Use Incognito in Chrome, InPrivate in Edge, or Private Browsing in Firefox or Safari, then try the same Upwork page or action. If it works there, the likely cause is an extension, cookie, or cached browser data.
- Try an updated supported browser. Upwork currently says it supports the latest two versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. See its supported browser guidance.
- Temporarily test without extensions or a VPN/proxy. Ad blockers, script or privacy tools, security extensions, VPNs, and proxies can interfere with page scripts, login checks, or live connections. Re-enable protections after the test; do not leave antivirus or firewall software disabled.
- Clear Upwork site data if the private-window test worked. Remove cookies and cached files for Upwork, then sign in again. This may sign you out and remove site preferences. If your browser allows site-specific exceptions, make a narrow exception rather than permitting all third-party cookies everywhere.
- Switch networks. Try a trusted mobile hotspot or another network. If Upwork works there but not on your usual Wi-Fi, investigate that network’s VPN, proxy, firewall, DNS, or filtering rules. On a managed work or school network, ask its administrator to check rather than bypassing its controls.
- Try another device, then restart your device. A browser test on a phone can help distinguish an app problem from a wider account or network issue.
Upwork’s technical troubleshooting guide also recommends comparing private browsing, browsers, devices, and networks. A useful read of those results:

- Works only in private browsing: investigate cookies, cache, and extensions.
- Works in another browser: update or troubleshoot the browser that fails.
- Works on a hotspot but not Wi-Fi: investigate the local network or its filtering.
- Browser works but app does not: focus on app version, app data, permissions, or device compatibility.
- Messages fail while the rest of Upwork works: check cookies and WebSocket filtering below.
- A button is disabled rather than the page failing to load: check account or action requirements, not just connectivity.
3. If the Upwork website is blank, partial, or stuck
If the page is blank, loads without job listings, loops at sign-in, or shows “No internet connection” while other websites work, start with the private-window and second-browser tests above. Keep JavaScript and cookies enabled, and allow the redirects needed for sign-in. Stale or blocked cookies can cause login loops or authentication failures; clear Upwork’s site data and sign in again if the clean-window test points to the browser.
Extensions that change scripts or block tracking and verification services can also prevent parts of the site from appearing. Disable them temporarily for a test, then re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict. Upwork’s supported-browser guidance also notes that TLS is required and obsolete SSL protocols are not supported.
Windows SSL or TLS errors
Treat this as an advanced exception, not a routine fix. If you use Windows and receive SSL errors despite a stable connection, update Windows and the browser first. If checking system settings is necessary, open Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced > Security. Do not enable obsolete SSL protocols or turn on every protocol indiscriminately; use current secure TLS settings. Restart the browser or app after a change.

Messages can fail even when the rest of Upwork is available. “Waiting for connection,” “Unable to load messages,” or “Unable to authenticate user” can indicate that the browser or network is blocking a required cookie or WebSocket connection. A WebSocket is a persistent connection that lets Messages exchange updates in real time; a page can load normally even when that connection cannot be established.

- Refresh the page once and confirm other sites have a connection.
- Try Messages in a private window or another supported browser.
- Allow the cookies required for authentication. If Messages cannot authenticate, Upwork specifically advises adding
tl.upwork.comto cookie exceptions or the trusted-site list, if your browser offers that option. - Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy, and compare with a trusted alternate network. Firewalls, antivirus web shields, and managed networks can block WebSockets or related traffic.
- If Messages work on another network, ask the network administrator or security-software provider to investigate the block rather than permanently disabling protections.

5. If the mobile app is stuck, crashing, or not syncing
Upwork describes mobile problems such as unavailable user information, an endless “Connecting” state, and a misleading “No internet connection” message. Confirm Wi-Fi or cellular data works, then switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to test the connection.
- Update Upwork from the official app store.
- Force-close the app (or force-stop it on Android), then reopen it.
- Restart the phone and try again.
- Open Upwork in the phone’s browser. If the browser works but the app does not, focus on the app version, device compatibility, permissions, or app data.
- If the issue persists, contact Upwork Support with the app version and phone details.
Upwork’s current mobile guidance lists iOS 16 or later for iPhone and Android 10 or later with Google Play services in one Help Center guide. Requirements can change and Android information has differed between Upwork pages, so check the live mobile-app guidance and your device’s app-store listing for the requirement that applies to your device.

6. If the Desktop App or Time Tracker will not open or connect
- Quit the Upwork Desktop App completely, reopen it, and install the latest available version.
- Restart the computer and test signing in to Upwork in a supported browser.
- Allow the browser redirects needed to authenticate or launch the app. If the website works but the Desktop App does not, the fault is more likely app-specific.
- Check that your operating system is supported on Upwork’s Desktop App download page. Chromebook is not listed as a supported Desktop App operating system.
- If the app appears stuck, check Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS for a stalled Upwork process, end it, then reopen the app.
- Reinstall only if updating and restarting do not help.
Do not use “Clear cache and restart” as an early fix. Upwork warns that clearing Desktop App cache can remove preferences, saved credentials, user settings, and unuploaded time cache. Use that reset only if Support directs you to or you accept the potential loss. If Support asks for logs, its Desktop App troubleshooting guide lists the relevant locations:

7. Handle special errors without making the problem worse
“Verifying You Are Human” repeats
A verification screen that returns repeatedly can point to a browser, network, VPN, cookie, or connection-verification problem rather than an ordinary loading delay. Enable JavaScript and cookies, temporarily test without a VPN or script/privacy extension, clear Upwork site data, and try another browser or network. Avoid rapidly refreshing or repeatedly resubmitting login attempts. Upwork explains this message in its verification troubleshooting guide.
Cloudflare error 1015
Error 1015 is a Cloudflare rate-limit/security response, not proof of a general Upwork outage or a specific cause on your device. Stop repeated refreshes and login attempts, wait before trying again, and test without a VPN or proxy. You can clear Upwork cookies and try another browser or network. Save the displayed Ray ID and the time it occurred in case you contact Support. Follow Upwork’s 1015 guidance.

Confirm you are using the email address on the account, check spam for a password-reset email, and try clearing Upwork cookies or another browser/device. Two-step verification, a security challenge, too many failed attempts, or an account restriction can stop login even if pages load. For some mobile account blocks caused by repeated failed attempts, Upwork says to sign in through Upwork.com to unblock the account. Do not assume a loading problem means the account is suspended; check account notices or contact Support. See Upwork’s login FAQ.

A button is greyed out or does nothing
If the page loads but actions such as Apply Now, Buy Connects, or Accept Offer are unavailable, the cause may be eligibility or account state rather than a loading fault. Check for an incomplete form or profile, insufficient Connects, billing setup, identity-verification requirements, or an account hold or restriction. Upwork lists these possibilities in its disabled-button guidance.
8. Contact Upwork Support with useful evidence
If the issue continues across browsers, devices, or networks—or involves missing tracked time, account access, or a payment—contact Upwork Support. Include enough detail to make the problem reproducible:

Contract title or ID (if time tracking is involved):Also note the exact page URL and whether an action may have completed despite a timeout. Upwork’s technical troubleshooting guide asks for details such as the expected and actual result, timestamps, device and software versions, and relevant screenshots. Do not send a HAR file or app logs unless Support requests them; those files can contain sensitive information.

Keep urgent work safe while troubleshooting
- If one Upwork app or browser fails, try another supported route: website, mobile app, or Desktop App, depending on the task.
- Save proposal text or other important unsent work locally before retrying.
- After a timeout during proposal submission, payment, or another consequential action, verify whether it succeeded before submitting again. This avoids duplicate actions.
- For time tracking, do not clear Desktop App cache if it may contain unuploaded time. Preserve the state and ask Support for guidance.
