You can upload website screenshots to Wasabi through its Management Console, an S3-compatible client or SDK, or a website flow that sends files directly from a browser using a short-lived presigned request. The key distinction: a successful upload does not make the screenshot publicly viewable. Wasabi buckets and objects are private by default, and account eligibility affects whether public access can be enabled.

This guide covers the manual workflow first, then automation and website uploads, and how to choose a safe way to serve the resulting files.

How do I upload website screenshots to Wasabi?

Wasabi stores files as objects inside buckets. For a one-off screenshot, use the Management Console. For repeat uploads from a script or application, use an S3-compatible tool or API with the endpoint for the bucket’s region. For a website form, let trusted backend code create a limited, expiring upload request, then let the browser send the file directly to Wasabi.

These approaches solve different jobs: console uploads are for an operator managing files, whereas presigned uploads are an application pattern. Do not put a long-lived Wasabi secret key in public JavaScript.

Choose the workflow

Method Best for Credential handling Access after upload
Wasabi Management Console One-off or occasional manual uploads An authorized console user signs in Private by default; configure access separately
S3-compatible client or SDK Repeatable uploads from a trusted machine or server Keep access keys in a protected environment Private by default; configure access separately
Browser direct upload with a presigned request A website accepting user-selected files Backend signs a narrowly scoped, expiring request; browser does not receive the long-term key Upload permission is limited by the signed request; read access is a separate decision

Wasabi’s console guide describes buckets and object uploads; its API reference documents the S3-compatible API model.

Upload a screenshot manually in the Wasabi Console

  1. Sign in to the Wasabi Management Console.
  2. Create a bucket for the site’s screenshot files, or select an existing bucket. Choose the bucket’s region with the application’s intended use and endpoint in mind.
  3. Use the console’s upload action to select the screenshot file and upload it as an object.
  4. Give the object a clear key, for example screenshots/homepage-desktop.png. This is a practical naming suggestion, not a Wasabi requirement.
  5. Decide how the site should retrieve the object. Keep it private for application-controlled access, use a temporary presigned download link for time-limited sharing, or verify that public access is available before relying on a permanent public URL.

The console is convenient for a person uploading a file, but it is not the right mechanism for visitors uploading screenshots through your site. For that, use a backend-authorized presigned upload flow.

Automate uploads with an S3-compatible tool or API

Wasabi’s S3 API works with compatible tools when they are configured with Wasabi’s service endpoint rather than another provider’s endpoint. The bucket region matters: use the matching regional endpoint. API access uses an Access Key ID and Secret Access Key; Wasabi’s access-key guide explains those credentials. Keep the secret out of source control, browser code, and logs.

Desktop and CMS integrations

  • Wasabi Explorer is Wasabi’s free desktop app for Windows and Mac; the downloads page also points to compatible third-party applications.
  • Wasabi’s Transmit guide shows an example using s3.wasabisys.com for the us-east-1 region. Use the service URL corresponding to the actual bucket region. The guide also records a multipart-upload issue for objects larger than 5 GB under a particular signature-method setup; account for this if using the client for large files.
  • For WordPress media assets, Wasabi documents the Media Cloud plugin as certified for Wasabi, with provider and endpoint setup guidance.

For any client or SDK, verify that it supports the required S3 operations and signing behavior, set the correct region endpoint, and test with the intended account. Integration availability does not establish comparative speed or reliability.

Let a website visitor upload a screenshot directly to Wasabi

For a user-upload form, avoid routing the full file through your application server unless that is an intentional design choice. A common pattern is to have the browser request an upload from your backend; the backend authenticates the user, validates the request, chooses the object key and allowed operation, and creates a short-lived presigned PUT or POST request. The backend returns only the signed upload instructions. The browser sends the file to Wasabi, then your application completes its normal confirmation flow.

  1. Authenticate and authorize. Check the user and decide whether they may upload to this feature.
  2. Choose the object key on the server. Do not trust a visitor to choose an arbitrary bucket or overwrite another user’s object. Use an application-defined key or otherwise enforce ownership and collision rules.
  3. Sign the limited request. Set an expiry appropriate to the upload and constrain the intended object and method using the supported presigning options.
  4. Return the signed instructions. Send the browser only what it needs for that upload, never the account’s long-term secret key.
  5. Upload and confirm. The browser sends the file to Wasabi and reports completion through your application’s normal flow. Validate the resulting object and clean up abandoned or rejected uploads according to your application’s policy.

Wasabi documents presigned client uploads and presigned access in its presigned URL guide. The exact user checks, file validation, and cleanup rules are application-specific.

Configure CORS without confusing it with permission

Wasabi’s S3 API supports bucket CORS behavior: its documentation says the service returns CORS headers when a request includes an Origin header and supports OPTIONS preflight for buckets and objects. Configure the bucket’s CORS rules for the website origin and methods/headers the browser needs. CORS only governs browser cross-origin behavior; it does not grant object access or authorize an unsigned upload. See Wasabi’s CORS documentation.

How do I make a Wasabi image URL public?

First confirm that your account can enable public access. Wasabi’s current documentation says accounts established after March 13, 2023 cannot enable public access through the Console or CLI; certain older paid accounts have a Public Access Override option, while trial accounts do not have public access by default. These rules can change, so check the current account controls and documentation before designing a permanent public-image workflow. Wasabi describes the rules in Defining Public Access for Folders and Files and Bucket and Object Access.

Wasabi documents URL patterns such as YOURBUCKETNAME.s3.wasabisys.com/FILENAME and s3.wasabisys.com/YOURBUCKET/FILENAME for objects that are actually public. They are examples, not proof that a particular bucket or account permits anonymous reads; confirm the region’s service URL as well. See Wasabi’s public-file mapping guide.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Private application content: keep the bucket/object private and have the application authorize retrieval.
  • Temporary sharing: generate a presigned download URL with an expiry suitable for the recipient and purpose. Anyone holding that bearer link can use its permitted action until it expires, so treat it as a secret and avoid longer validity than needed.
  • Permanent public image: use only if the account’s current access controls permit it and the screenshot is safe for anyone on the internet to read. Do not expose a bucket or folder containing private or sensitive screenshots.

A successful upload and a reachable URL are separate outcomes. A private object can exist normally while anonymous requests to its URL fail.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

No typical screenshot size, upload speed, or savings figure is established here; measure your own files and workload rather than assuming a generic number. Reliability depends on the client, network, region, and application retry/validation design. For a website upload flow, use limited presigned permissions, handle expired requests by asking the backend for a fresh one, and make completion checks part of the application flow.

Wasabi’s pricing page currently advertises Pay as You Go Hot Cloud Storage starting at $7.99 per TB per month (Wasabi pricing page, checked September 29, 2026) and says it charges no egress or API-request fees. Rates and terms can change; check Wasabi’s live pricing page before estimating costs. Wasabi’s console guide describes a reasonable-use egress policy: if monthly downloads exceed active storage volume, the use case may not fit its free-egress model. A site serving many screenshot views should estimate storage and download volume and review current terms.

Common upload problems and fixes

  • Access denied when uploading: verify that the credentials or presigned request allow the intended operation on the selected object, and that the key has not expired. Do not fix this by exposing a broad secret in frontend code.
  • Endpoint or signature errors: check the bucket’s region and use its matching Wasabi endpoint; review the client’s S3 compatibility and signing configuration.
  • Browser CORS error: check the bucket CORS configuration against the website origin, requested method, and headers, including preflight handling. CORS does not replace authentication.
  • Upload works but image URL returns an error: the object may still be private. Choose authenticated retrieval, a presigned download link, or public access only if the account allows it.
  • Presigned request expired: have the browser request a new signed upload from the backend. Do not extend validity indefinitely as a workaround.
  • Unexpected exposure: review bucket and object access before sharing links, and keep sensitive screenshot collections private.
  • Large multipart upload issue in Transmit: Wasabi notes a Transmit multipart-upload problem for files larger than 5 GB with a particular signature-method setup. Check the integration guide and use a supported configuration or client for that case.

Or skip the browser setup

If the job is creating screenshots of web pages rather than storing files visitors already selected, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For a screenshot, the cURL example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request details. Cookie/consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload screenshots to Wasabi without using the console?

Yes. Use an S3-compatible client or SDK for trusted automation, or have a website backend issue a presigned upload request for the browser.

Does CORS make my Wasabi screenshots public?

No. CORS controls browser cross-origin requests; it does not change bucket/object access or authorize an upload.

Can I use a permanent Wasabi URL for every screenshot?

No. A URL pattern alone does not guarantee public reads; account eligibility and the object’s access settings determine whether anonymous access works.
