Use Mozilla’s current enterprise MSI, create a versioned Configuration Manager application, detect firefox.exe by file version, and pilot the deployment before expanding it. For most managed Windows estates, Firefox ESR is the practical default because it reduces feature-change frequency; Rapid Release is suitable when newer capabilities justify a four-week cadence. This guide updates the older Firefox 74.0.1 and ConfigMgr 2002 examples found in legacy walkthroughs.
Choose the release channel first
Rapid Release receives major browser changes approximately every four weeks. ESR branches about once a year and receives security and stability fixes throughout its support lifecycle. ESR is not inherently more secure; both channels receive security fixes. Choose ESR when compatibility testing and predictable change windows matter most, and Rapid Release when users need newer platform features and your team can validate them frequently. See Mozilla’s enterprise deployment guidance.
Also decide whether ConfigMgr will control every update or whether the MSI will provide initial installation while Firefox updates itself. Mozilla says automatic updates are enabled by default and recommends leaving them enabled where the environment permits it (update management documentation).

Prerequisites and design decisions
- A functioning Configuration Manager site and healthy Windows clients.
- Rights to create applications, distribute content, and deploy to collections.
- A stable UNC source path, distribution points or a distribution-point group, and a pilot device collection.
- A documented update, rollback, and active-browser policy.
- An inventory of existing Firefox installations: MSI, EXE, Microsoft Store, per-user, 32-bit, and 64-bit.
- A decision about preserving profiles, bookmarks, certificates, extensions, and enterprise policies.
Install for System is normally the better choice for a device-wide browser deployment. Use User only when the application is intentionally user-scoped and detection is tested in that context. Do not copy the user-context selection from an old screenshot without validating it in your environment.

Download and stage the official MSI
Obtain the package from Mozilla’s enterprise download page or its MSI deployment documentation. Select Firefox or Firefox ESR, the required language, and the correct x64, x86, or ARM64 package. Record the exact version used; “latest” is a moving target.

Detection
Use a new versioned folder for every approved release. Do not replace an MSI in place while an existing application references it. Versioned content improves auditing, rollback, distribution validation, and troubleshooting.
Create the ConfigMgr application
- Open the console and go to Software Library → Application Management → Applications.
- Select Create Application.
- Choose automatic detection from an installation file, then select Windows Installer (*.msi file).
- Browse to the staged MSI and review the imported publisher, product name, version, product code, content location, and command line.
- Use a descriptive name such as
Mozilla Firefox ESR x64 en-US - <version>. - Finish the wizard, then edit the deployment type. Imported metadata is a starting point, not proof that installation behavior and detection are correct.
Silent installation
msiexec.exe /i "Firefox Setup <version>.msi" /qn /norestart
msiexec.exe /i "Firefox Setup <version>.msi" /qn /norestart /L*v "%WINDIR%TempFirefox-Install.log"
Replace the placeholder with the actual filename. For removal, obtain the current MSI product code from the deployment type rather than reusing an old example:
msiexec.exe /x "{PRODUCT-CODE}" /qn /norestart
Standard MSI options and Firefox-specific packaging notes are documented by Mozilla’s MSI guide. Test whether the package behaves as expected in the selected System or User context, and do not assume /qn resolves open-browser or process-lock issues.

Use robust detection
Automatically imported MSI product-code detection can produce a false failure: Firefox may be installed and launch correctly while ConfigMgr cannot find the expected product-code evidence. A related documented troubleshooting case recommends executable-based detection instead.
Create a file rule for firefox.exe and require a minimum version equal to the package you are deploying:
- 64-bit:
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe - 32-bit on 64-bit Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe
For mixed architectures or legacy states, use a discovery script. This template is intentionally a starting point; test it with both channels, localized packages, per-user installs, and your actual version format.
$minimumVersion = [version]'<approved-version>'
$paths = @(
"$env:ProgramFilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe",
"${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe"
) | Where-Object { $_ -and (Test-Path $_) }
foreach ($path in $paths) {
$v = (Get-Item $path).VersionInfo.ProductVersion
if ([version]$v -ge $minimumVersion) { Write-Output 'Detected'; exit 0 }
}
exit 1
Do not write a new application rule that accepts any Firefox version: an old installation could then be reported compliant and the upgrade would never run. Conversely, detection should treat a newer self-updated version as compliant so an older MSI cannot downgrade it.

Manage Firefox policies separately
Installation and browser configuration are different concerns. Use Mozilla ADMX/GPO, policies.json, Intune, or another management system for homepage, extensions, certificates, proxy, security, and update settings. ConfigMgr can deliver the files, but it is not the Firefox policy schema. See Mozilla’s policy configuration guide and policy reference. Disabling updates with DisableAppUpdate is a deliberate security and operations decision; Mozilla recommends keeping updates enabled when feasible.
Choose an update model
Model A: Firefox self-updates
Deploy the approved MSI once and let Firefox’s updater maintain the browser. This minimizes repackaging and can deliver security fixes sooner, but update timing and compliance reporting are less centralized. Update downloads may also be affected by proxy or network restrictions and can depend on the Mozilla Maintenance Service.
Model B: ConfigMgr applications with supersedence
- Stage the new MSI in a new versioned folder and create a new application.
- Test its command line and minimum-version detection.
- Open the new application’s properties, select Supersedence, and add the previous application.
- Choose whether the superseded application should be uninstalled. Test this especially for channel, architecture, Store-to-MSI, and per-user/per-machine transitions.
- Pilot the upgrade, verify profile and policy preservation, then expand deployment rings.
A normal upgrade should not be assumed to preserve every profile or setting across different installation types. Keep the previous source and document rollback steps.
Deploy in controlled rings
- Distribute content to the pilot distribution point or distribution-point group and confirm successful content status.
- Deploy with Action: Install. Use Available for optional pilot testing or Required for enforced installation.
- Set availability and deadline times that respect maintenance windows.
- Choose notifications appropriate to your users, and avoid forced installation while Firefox is actively being used unless that behavior is explicitly approved.
- Start with a small pilot, then expand to broader collections only after validation.
Console labels can vary by Current Branch release and administrative configuration, but the underlying flow—content, collection, schedule, user experience, and monitoring—remains the same.

Validate before broad rollout
Server-side
- Content is distributed and validated on the intended distribution points.
- The deployment targets the correct collection and supersedence relationship.
- Monitoring shows expected installation and compliance counts.
Client-side
- Machine policy was received and application evaluation ran.
- Content came from the expected distribution point.
- The MSI exit code succeeded and the detected file version meets the threshold.
- Firefox launches and existing profiles, bookmarks, certificates, extensions, and policies behave as expected.
- The selected update model actually operates as documented.
Useful client logs include AppEnforce.log, AppDiscovery.log, CAS.log, ContentTransferManager.log, LocationServices.log, and PolicyAgent.log. Trigger Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle and Application Deployment Evaluation Cycle after correcting a rule.
Troubleshoot common failures
Firefox works, but ConfigMgr reports failure
Start with AppEnforce.log for the MSI result and AppDiscovery.log for the detection decision. Check the Firefox installation log, then replace untested product-code detection with a tested file-version rule. Also verify System versus User context, alternate install paths, and whether a newer version already exists.
Content is unavailable
Check source-share permissions, distribution-point status, boundary groups, client cache space, and whether someone changed the source after distribution. If content changed, update the application’s content version and redistribute it.

Installations are inconsistent
Inventory Rapid Release and ESR side by side, x86 and x64, MSI and EXE packages, Store installations, and per-user paths. Build separate detection or remediation logic where one rule cannot reliably describe all states.
Alternatives to manual ConfigMgr packaging
Organizations already using Configuration Manager can continue with MSI applications and supersedence. Others may prefer GPO plus MSI, Intune or another MDM, or a third-party software-update catalog. Catalogs can reduce recurring packaging work for many applications, but evaluate Firefox channel coverage, detection quality, approval workflows, restricted-network support, package signing, and emergency-release response. Paid tooling is optional; Mozilla’s MSI plus ConfigMgr is sufficient for a controlled deployment.
Production checklist
- Channel, architecture, locale, and approved version are documented.
- The MSI came from Mozilla’s official enterprise source.
- Content is stored in a versioned UNC folder.
- Silent install, logging, and uninstall commands were tested.
- Detection checks the installed executable and minimum version.
- Policies and automatic-update behavior are documented.
- Supersedence, profile preservation, downgrade prevention, and rollback were tested.
- Pilot deployment, logs, content status, and compliance reports are clean.
- Open-browser behavior and maintenance-window handling are understood.

Should every enterprise use Firefox ESR?
No. ESR is usually the better fit for predictable change control and compatibility testing; Rapid Release is appropriate when newer features and a faster validation cycle are priorities. Both channels receive security fixes.
Why can Firefox be installed even though ConfigMgr says the deployment failed?
A successful MSI installation can still fail application discovery when an imported product-code rule does not match the installed Firefox evidence. Check AppDiscovery.log and use tested file-version detection.
Can ConfigMgr supersedence guarantee that Firefox profiles are preserved?
No. Test profile and policy preservation, especially when changing channel, architecture, Store versus MSI, or per-user versus per-machine installation.
