aka.ms/startlinking appears to be a Microsoft short-link entry point for starting a phone-linking process. However, the safest and most dependable current method is to open Phone Link directly in Windows, choose iPhone, and complete the QR-code and Bluetooth pairing flow.
Phone Link provides useful access to iPhone calls, recent calls, selected messages, contacts, and notifications. It is not full iPhone synchronization: it does not mirror the iPhone screen, sync your complete iMessage history, provide iCloud Drive or Photos access, or run iPhone apps on Windows.
Unlocking iPhone–Windows Linking with aka.ms/startlinking
What is aka.ms/startlinking?
aka.ms is Microsoft’s URL-shortening domain. The startlinking address is associated with beginning a phone-to-PC linking experience, but its exact current redirect destination should not be assumed. The link’s present destination could not be independently verified here.
You do not need to rely on the short URL to connect an iPhone. Microsoft’s current instructions begin with the Windows app:

- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Search for Phone Link.
- Open the app and select iPhone under Pick your phone.
This direct route also reduces the risk of entering Microsoft account credentials into an unexpected webpage. Treat any short link as an entry point, not as proof that your iPhone will receive complete Windows synchronization.

What Phone Link can do with an iPhone
Once paired, Phone Link acts mainly as a Bluetooth bridge between the iPhone and Windows PC. Depending on the permissions granted and the Windows version, it can provide:

- Recent calls: view up to 100 recent calls in the iPhone calling view.
- Messages: send and receive supported text-message interactions while the Bluetooth connection remains active.
- Notifications: display iPhone notifications on Windows when notification sharing is enabled.
- Contacts: use synchronized contacts for calling and messaging when contact access is granted.
- Windows 11 Start-menu integration: on supported installations where Microsoft’s gradual rollout has reached the PC, view selected mobile-device information from Start.
The exact experience depends on Windows updates, Phone Link’s version, Bluetooth support, iPhone permissions, and whether the devices remain connected.
What it does not synchronize
Phone Link is useful for lightweight desktop access, but “iPhone–Windows synchronization” should not be interpreted as a complete copy of the iPhone on your PC. It does not provide:
- Complete iMessage history or a full iMessage replacement.
- General iPhone app access or screen mirroring.
- iCloud Drive integration or a complete iPhone backup.
- Automatic iPhone photo-library synchronization through the iPhone Phone Link experience.
- Sending or receiving images, GIFs, or Memojis in iPhone messages through Phone Link.
- Full group-message management. A group message may appear as a notification, but responding may require using the iPhone.
- The ability to delete messages or recent calls from the PC.
Message history in Phone Link is also connection-dependent. Microsoft says that, for iPhone, messages sent or received while the devices are connected over Bluetooth are available in the app. When Bluetooth disconnects, that history can disappear from Phone Link. This is documented behavior, not necessarily data loss from the iPhone.

Requirements for connecting an iPhone
- Windows 10 with the May 2019 Update or later, or Windows 11.
- An iPhone running iOS 16 or later.
- Bluetooth enabled on both devices.
- Bluetooth Low Energy support on the Windows PC.
- The iPhone and PC close to each other during pairing.
- A personal Microsoft account. Work and school accounts are not supported for this setup.
Microsoft recommends version 1.23031.2 or later of the optional Link to Windows iPhone app when it is installed. The app is not required for the basic iPhone pairing process described in Microsoft’s setup documentation.
Do not automatically apply Android requirements to an iPhone. The iPhone flow centers on Bluetooth and iOS permissions; it does not require a shared Wi-Fi network for the basic Phone Link setup.

How to pair an iPhone with Phone Link
- Open Phone Link. Use Start search rather than depending on
aka.ms/startlinking. - Select iPhone. If the option is unavailable or greyed out, check the Bluetooth requirements below.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Phone Link will display a QR code.
- Scan the QR code. Use the iPhone’s default Camera app.
- Approve pairing. Accept the Bluetooth pairing request on both the iPhone and PC, and make sure the displayed codes match.
- Grant iPhone permissions. In particular, enable the permissions required for notifications, messages, contacts, and calls.
- Test the connection. In Phone Link, open Calls, Messages, and Notifications separately.
Important iPhone permissions
During or after Bluetooth pairing, open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone, select the information button next to the Windows PC, and review the available permissions:
- Share System Notifications: required for sending iPhone notifications to Windows.
- Show Notifications: enables message notifications to appear on the PC.
- Sync Contacts: supports contacts, messages, and call-history features.
The labels can vary slightly with iOS versions, but the relevant controls are in the Bluetooth details for the paired PC.
Using calls, messages, and notifications
Calls
- Open Phone Link.
- Select Calls.
- Search for a contact or enter a number with the dial pad.
- Select the Dial icon.
Bluetooth must remain enabled and available on both devices. Phone Link is not a replacement for the iPhone’s primary phone service and should not be treated as the sole method for emergency calling. Use the iPhone or normal phone service for emergencies.
Messages
- Open Phone Link and select Messages.
- Select New message.
- Enter a contact name or number.
- Select the contact and compose the message.
On iPhone, the Phone Link message view is limited to messages sent or received while the Bluetooth connection is active. The PC cannot delete those messages, and media such as images, GIFs, and Memojis are not supported in this experience.
Notifications
Notifications require an active Bluetooth connection, a nearby iPhone, and Share System Notifications enabled for the PC in the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings. Windows settings can also suppress them. Battery Saver, Focus, and related notification controls may prevent alerts from appearing.
If notifications stop, check the iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth, select the paired PC, and confirm that notification sharing is still enabled. Then review Windows notification settings and disable any Battery Saver or Focus setting that is blocking alerts.

Windows 11 Start-menu integration
Some Windows 11 installations can show a connected iPhone from the Start menu as part of Microsoft’s newer mobile-device integration. This is a separate, gradually rolled-out feature—not the definition of aka.ms/startlinking and not guaranteed to appear on every PC.

Where available, connected iPhone features can include battery and connection status, Messages, Calls, recent activities, and file sending. See Microsoft’s mobile device in Start menu documentation for availability details.

Phone Link permissions can expose private information on the Windows PC. Message and notification access may include personal conversations, medical or financial alerts, and two-factor-authentication SMS codes where applicable.
- Use a separate Windows account on a shared computer.
- Lock the PC whenever you leave it unattended.
- Disable message or notification access if other people can see the desktop.
- Do not rely on Phone Link as the only place to monitor authentication codes.
- When retiring or handing over the PC, remove the iPhone from both Phone Link and Windows Bluetooth settings.
To disconnect the devices, remove the iPhone from Phone Link, then on the iPhone open Settings > Bluetooth, select the PC, and choose Forget This Device. Microsoft’s setup guide documents the unlinking process.
Troubleshooting Phone Link on iPhone
The iPhone option is greyed out
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
- Confirm that the PC supports Bluetooth Low Energy.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Update Phone Link through the Microsoft Store.
- Restart Phone Link and try again.
The QR-code pairing fails
Perform a clean re-pair:
- In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and remove the iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information icon beside the PC, and choose Forget This Device.
- Turn Bluetooth off on both devices and wait 10 seconds.
- Turn Bluetooth on again.
- Reopen Phone Link and select Try pairing again.
Calls work, but messages do not
Being paired is not enough if the relevant iPhone permissions are disabled. Check Share System Notifications, Show Notifications, and Sync Contacts in the Bluetooth details for the PC. Also confirm that the iPhone is actively connected, rather than merely listed as a remembered device.
Messages disappear
This is expected when the Bluetooth connection ends. iPhone messages shown by Phone Link are tied to the active connection and are not a permanent message archive.

Pairing codes no longer match or repeated attempts fail
Microsoft says that more than three failed code-matching attempts can automatically block the linking attempt. Close and reopen Phone Link, then begin setup again. If the problem continues, remove the pairing from both devices and repeat the clean re-pair procedure. Microsoft also provides a Phone Link setup troubleshooting guide.
Is Phone Link the right solution?
Phone Link is a good fit if you want hands-free calling from a Windows laptop, basic message access, desktop notifications, and a free first-party Microsoft feature without installing a large third-party desktop suite.
It is a poor fit if your goal is full iMessage history, dependable group-chat management, media messaging, iPhone photo synchronization, iCloud Drive access, screen mirroring, iPhone app access, or backup and archival. Those requirements call for Apple’s own services and hardware or a dedicated transfer or backup solution that explicitly supports the feature you need.
The practical trade-off is straightforward: Phone Link offers convenience, but only through a narrow Bluetooth-based connection. It complements an iPhone; it does not turn Windows into an Apple-device substitute.
