Samsung Galaxy devices separate ordinary system defaults—such as your browser—from the app that handles a particular file. A PDF can also be opened inside My Files, Chrome, Drive, an email app, or another app’s built-in viewer. Start by identifying where the file is opened: use Settings → Apps → Choose default apps for supported system categories; clear the current app’s default and reopen the file for a normal Android chooser; and, on One UI 8.5, use My Files’ Open with command when its PDF viewer takes over.
What “default app” means on a Galaxy
There is no single switch that controls every extension. Android and One UI use several related mechanisms:
- System categories: Browser, phone, SMS, home launcher, digital assistant and other roles.
- Supported links: Apps that can open particular web domains.
- File associations: Apps that advertise themselves as handlers for PDFs, images, audio, documents and other Android file intents.
- Embedded viewers: My Files, a browser, cloud storage, email and messaging apps may display a file internally instead of invoking the system chooser.
Consequently, many Galaxy phones do not show a universal “PDF app” or “.docx app” list in the default-apps screen. Available categories and labels vary by model, One UI version, installed apps and region. Samsung’s general instructions are documented at Samsung Support.
Change a standard system default
For categories Samsung exposes, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Choose default apps.
- Select a category.
- Choose the installed app you want to use.
For example, choose Browser app, then select Samsung Internet, Chrome, Firefox or another compatible browser. Google documents the equivalent Android route as Settings → Apps → Default apps (or Choose default apps) → Browser app at Android Help.

If you cannot find the entry, search Settings for default apps or choose default apps. A category may be absent because your software version, region or installed applications do not provide it.
Change the app that opens a PDF or other file
When a file type has been assigned to an app, clear that assignment and open the file again. Menu wording differs slightly between Galaxy versions.
- Go to Settings → Apps.
- Select the app currently opening the file.
- Tap Open by default, Set as default or a similar option.
- Tap Clear defaults, or turn off the relevant opening control.
- Open the same file again from the same location.
- When a chooser appears, select the preferred compatible app.
- Choose Just once for a temporary choice or Always when Android offers it.
This clear-and-reopen sequence is described in Google’s Android Help Community guidance, which is troubleshooting advice rather than a guarantee that every Samsung build will show the same controls: Google Android Help Community.
Android may show only Just once. That can happen when the source app uses an embedded viewer, Samsung routes the file to a system viewer, the selected app does not advertise a permanent handler, a work profile restricts choices, or a software update changes chooser behavior.

One UI 8.5: PDFs opened in My Files
Samsung says that beginning with One UI 8.5, PDFs opened from My Files use the My Files viewer by default. To use another installed PDF-capable app:
- Open My Files and select the PDF.
- In the viewer, tap Edit to choose an alternative viewer, or tap More options (the three dots) → Open with.
- Select the app you want, such as Samsung Notes if it is installed and compatible.

The documented action selects an alternative viewer for that opening; Samsung does not state that it creates a permanent, device-wide PDF association. If you need a lasting change, test the clear-default procedure from the same source, while recognizing that My Files may continue to use its own viewer.
Why the same PDF behaves differently elsewhere
Always test from the location you normally use. The source application can determine the result:

A preferred app must be installed, updated and capable of handling the file type. Work or school management policies, Secure Folder, and separate work profiles can also isolate apps and defaults.

Reset app preferences when the chooser is missing
Use this broader reset before deleting app data:
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Select Reset app preferences.
- Review the warning and confirm.
The location and wording vary by One UI version. This normally does not uninstall apps or delete personal files, but it can restore default handlers and reset disabled-app states, notification restrictions, permissions-related choices or background-data settings. Review the confirmation screen and expect to recheck affected app settings.
Samsung warns that clearing an app’s data returns it to a factory-default state and permanently removes personal app data stored there. Do not use Settings → Apps → [app] → Storage → Clear data as the first fix; back up credentials and local content first.
A least-disruptive troubleshooting order
- Restart the Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Update One UI, My Files and the preferred viewer through their normal update channels.
- Clear the current app’s Open by default setting and reopen the file.
- Check the source app for settings such as Use built-in viewer, Open PDFs in or Open supported links.
- Try the file from another location or file manager.
- Reset app preferences.
- Submit an error report in Samsung Members or contact Samsung Support.
- Only after backing up app data, consider clearing data for the single app involved.
Some Galaxy S26 owners have reported difficulty establishing a permanent external PDF association through My Files in Samsung Community discussions. These are user reports, not proof of a universal S26 defect: discussion 1 and discussion 2. Workarounds include My Files’ Open with, another file manager, updates and an error report. Do not treat uninstalling My Files updates as a standard or permanent fix.
Choosing a replacement PDF app
Changing the opener does not require buying software. Choose based on whether you only need to read a file or also need annotation, signatures, editing or conversion.

Why is there no PDF option under Choose default apps?
Samsung’s documented screen covers supported system categories, not every file extension. Clear the current PDF app’s Open by default setting and reopen the file, or use My Files’ Open with command on One UI 8.5.
Why does My Files ignore my preferred PDF app?
One UI 8.5 routes PDFs opened in My Files to its integrated viewer by default. Select Edit or More options → Open with, or test the file from another source.
How do I undo an accidental “Always” choice?
Open Settings → Apps, select the app that launches the file, open Open by default or Set as default, clear the default, then reopen the file.

Will resetting app preferences delete my files?
It normally does not uninstall apps or delete personal files, but it changes defaults and other app preferences. Read the confirmation screen before accepting.
Why does my preferred app not appear?

Can different apps open different file types?
