Universities use WordPress both for public-facing homepages and for networks of department, school, and research sites. A third-party roundup by Vital Design says it checked eight university marketing homepages on 8 July 2026; separate institutional and project accounts document WordPress multisite deployments at St Andrews, Utah, and Boise State. Those are different kinds of evidence, not a complete directory of universities using WordPress.

Which universities use WordPress on their main homepage?

Vital Design’s roundup, “8 Best University Websites Built on WordPress”, says it live-checked the following main marketing homepages on 8 July 2026:

  • Boise State University
  • Park University
  • Providence College
  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Northeastern University
  • Harvard University
  • Georgia State University
  • University of Washington

This is a dated third-party observation, not an exhaustive census or an independently reproduced audit. Vital Design also notes that Harvard does not have a fixed homepage and that its check scored the seasonal feature visible at the time. Its ratings and rankings reflect the publisher’s selected measures and sampled pages; they are not objective measures of WordPress quality or of each university’s entire digital estate.

Which universities have documented WordPress multisite networks?

A WordPress multisite network is one installation administered as a network of separate sites. Universities can use it to give schools, departments, programs, or research groups their own publishing spaces while sharing some infrastructure and governance. The examples below concern networks or projects, not necessarily the institution’s main homepage.

University of St Andrews: a historical network of more than 300 sites

St Andrews’ official accessibility statement for its WordPress multisite domain says wp.st-andrews.ac.uk hosted over 300 individual WordPress sites. The statement was prepared and last reviewed on 23 September 2020, so the count describes the network at that time, not its 2026 size. It also described accessibility shortcomings involving images, documents, links, forms, contrast, focus indicators, and labels, and said the university was switching to accessible themes and reviewing plugins. This is a useful reminder that a CMS choice does not by itself establish accessible sites.

University of Utah College of Architecture and Planning: ten sites in one project

In a 15 March 2025 case study, practitioner Jonathan Armstrong says a project brought ten College of Architecture and Planning websites into one WordPress multisite installation. The account describes a shared design framework, editors assigned at the site level, and the ability to surface subsite content on the college homepage. It documents that college project; it is not an official claim that Utah uses WordPress across the whole university.

Boise State: department sites with shared standards

Vendor Modern Tribe’s Boise State case study describes a WordPress multisite network with structured content tools for departments creating sites under communications-team standards. It also discusses accessibility work and integration with Cludo search. The case study is vendor-authored and does not establish that WordPress powers every Boise State public-facing or internal system.

What WordPress Multisite can—and cannot—tell you

WordPress documentation explains how to create and administer a network. In university settings, a network can reduce duplicated platform work and support shared design or content reuse while allowing local publishing autonomy. It can also concentrate operational responsibilities: network administrators need clear ownership, roles, standards, maintenance, and escalation practices.

Multisite is an architecture option, not a guarantee that every subsite shares the same theme, plugins, editorial rules, accessibility, or maintenance condition. The St Andrews statement, Utah project account, and Boise State vendor case study illustrate different implementations rather than one standard university model.

How to assess a university WordPress example

Before treating a university as a model for your own web estate, establish what exactly the example covers. A homepage sighting is not evidence of an institution-wide network, and a multisite case study does not prove the corporate homepage uses the same setup.

  • Scope: Is the evidence about the main marketing homepage, a college project, or a network of sites?
  • Governance: Who controls themes, plugins, site creation, publishing permissions, and shared standards? How much autonomy do local editors have?
  • Accessibility: Look for evidence of testing and remediation across themes, content, forms, documents, and plugins. The CMS brand alone is not proof of compliance.
  • Operations: Consider maintenance ownership, integrations such as search, content reuse, and how the institution handles issues across many sites.
  • Date and attribution: A dated third-party check, an official institutional statement, and a vendor or practitioner case study have different scopes and evidentiary weight.

These examples show that WordPress can serve university sites and multi-site publishing needs. They do not establish a universal best platform: the right fit depends on the scope, governance, accessibility work, and operational capacity required.
