United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said on the company’s October 16, 2025, third-quarter earnings call that management headcount was 4% lower than a year earlier and that United planned another 4% reduction in 2026. He linked the efficiency effort to both AI and process changes. That is more precise than saying AI alone eliminated 4% of all United headquarters jobs: the company did not disclose an exact job count, affected departments, or how the reductions were made.
What United actually announced
On its October 16, 2025, third-quarter earnings call, United discussed efforts to make its headquarters management team more efficient through changes to processes and the use of AI. In the call transcript, Kirby said management headcount was down 4% year over year and the company planned to reduce it by another 4% in 2026.
This was an earnings-call comment, not a standalone announcement that AI had directly replaced a specified number of workers. United’s wording links AI and process changes to improved efficiency, then gives a management-headcount figure. It does not show that every position behind that figure disappeared because of AI.
What the 4% does—and does not—measure
The stated figure is for management headcount. It is not a reported 4% cut to United’s entire workforce, nor does the transcript establish that it covers every employee based at headquarters. Without a disclosed management-headcount denominator, there is no reliable way to convert the percentage into a number of jobs.

- Not established: Whether positions were eliminated through layoffs, attrition, unfilled vacancies, transfers, reorganization, outsourcing, or a combination.
The 2026 figure was a forward-looking plan, not a confirmed outcome. The available cited material does not establish whether United completed, changed, or postponed that target. Nor should two 4% figures automatically be added into an 8% reduction: the calculation depends on the starting headcount and how United measured each year’s change.
Where AI may fit in airline work
United did not name the departments or roles affected by the management reduction. Tasks such as routine reporting, data preparation, workflow routing, forecasting support, scheduling assistance, and administrative coordination are examples of work that automation may change across corporate functions; they are not confirmed targets at United.

AI can also change a job without performing the whole job. A system might draft a report or surface a forecast while a person checks assumptions, handles exceptions, and makes or approves decisions. In that case, the work may become faster or require fewer people, but the technology is supporting tasks rather than autonomously replacing an entire role.
United also discussed operational technology on the call. One example was Orca, which the transcript describes as helping optimize aircraft routing, crew pairings, and customer connections during major disruptions. That is a different use case from reducing headquarters management work: operational decision support can help employees coordinate a complex response without proving that frontline roles have been cut.

For an airline, the distinction matters. A tool that recommends a routing or connection plan is not the same as handing over safety-critical, regulated, or labor-sensitive decisions to an automated system. The announcement does not say United automated those responsibilities.

United placed the headcount comments within a broader efficiency effort, rather than describing AI as a standalone labor program. More productive corporate processes may help control overhead and let an airline support its operations without increasing headquarters staffing at the same pace. The call does not establish that AI was the sole reason for the changes or quantify savings from the management reduction.

Automation can speed repetitive work and reduce duplicated manual effort, but it brings trade-offs. Fewer people may mean less institutional knowledge and more work concentrated among remaining employees. Automated forecasts or recommendations can be wrong, and poor oversight can turn an error into a planning or operational problem. Companies also have to account for data security, privacy, software integration, training, employee morale, and the time required for human review.

For employees, the practical effects may include redesigned responsibilities, new software expectations, and greater emphasis on judgment, exception handling, compliance, and coordination. Those are general possibilities, not details United supplied about affected workers. The call did not identify severance terms, retraining plans, or how remaining employees would be supported.

Does this mean cuts to pilots or other frontline staff?
No such conclusion follows from the cited announcement. Kirby was discussing management headcount. The 4% figure is not a companywide workforce reduction, and the call does not say that AI eliminated 4% of pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, airport agents, or other frontline employees. Any separate staffing change would need its own evidence.
What to watch for
To assess what became of the 2026 plan, look for later United earnings calls, workforce disclosures, filings, and executive statements. Useful details would include the actual headcount change, whether it applied to the same management category, the use of layoffs versus attrition or vacancies, and any specific explanation of AI’s contribution. United’s quarterly-results archive collects company earnings materials, but the 2025 announcement alone does not answer those follow-up questions.
The larger significance is not that United has proved AI directly replaces a fixed share of airline jobs. It is that the company connected AI and process redesign to a measurable management-headcount reduction, while leaving the size, mechanics, and precise role of AI in that reduction undisclosed.
